2 The Village of McBride Annual Water System Report McBride Water System Annual Report for 2016 In 2016 the McBride water system supplied potable water to approximately twelve hundred (1,200) persons. This equates to approximately four hundred ( 400) connections to the water system. The system utilizes a gravity intake that draws water from Dominion Creek. The water is detained in a settling pond that slows the velocity of the water and allows the solids to settle out before intake into the water treatme11t plant. The water is chlorinated, which is followed by ultraviolet treatment to further treat the water for bacteria. After the treatment occurs it is stored in a concrete reservoir to await distribution to the users. The water leaves the reservoir through a variety of different types and sizes of pipes that eventually connect to the users building through a curb stop and service line. 3 The Village of McBride Annual Water System Report Escherichia coli commonly abbreviated E. coli) is commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms. Most E.coli strains are harmless, but some serotypes can cause serious food poisoning in humans, and are occasionally responsible for product recalls due to food contamination. [1] Coliform bacteria are a commonly used bacterial indicator of sanitary quality of foods and water. Coliforms can be found in the aquatic environment, in soil and on vegetation; they are universally present in large numbers in the feces of warm-blooded animals. While coliforms are themselves not normally causes of serious illness, they are easy to culture and their presence is used to indicate that other pathogenic organisms of fecal origin may be present. Fecal pathogens include bacteria, viruses, or protozoa and many multicellular parasites. [2] Turbidity is the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by individual particles (suspended solids) that are generally invisible to the naked eye, similar to smoke in air. The measurement of turbidity is a key test of water quality. [3] From the above data it is easy to see that the water quality is good. The water is not a concern for health risks and is rated as low on Public Health Protection Website that is operated by Northern Health. [4] From the inspections that Northern Health has compiled in 2013, no Escherichia Coli (E-Coli) was found in the raw water and minimal Coliforms were detected. The turbidity measurements are taken inside the pump house constantly but are recorded almost every day in a log book. The Turbidity of the water increases during the spring melt which is normal. The maximum allowable Turbidity for short periods of time is 5 NTU, and 1 NTU for an average monthly reading. Water chemistry sampling was undertaken in Northern Health requires water chemistry samples every five (5) years and a full set of water chemistry samples was taken on the 29 th of January This data is shown in Table 3 below. The full lab report is attached. None of the results were higher than the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. These guidelines are attached to this report. Page 2 of 4

The current, aged water intake will be replaced with underground tanks. Permit is pending engineered design changes which will be submitted to Northern Health once completed. An Emergency Response Plan was created in 2010 and is posted in a variety of locations in case of emergency. A log of the chlorine residual shows that the average yearly concentration is 0.33 ppm (parts per million) through the distribution system. The breakdown of samples taken per month is shown below in Table 4. Samples were taken a minimum of twenty (80) times per month often samples were taken in multiple locations throughout the village. Environmental Operators Certification Program classified the water system as Level 2 distribution. This requires the operators to have sufficient training and operation skills to be able to operate the water system was a very busy year at the McBride water treatment plant. A lot of maintenance and upgrades were completed. Along with the routine maintenance schedule, this year we were able to add several gages to aid in troubleshooting various parts of the system. Due to issues with the chlorine system not operating properly, we replaced gas lines and all fittings on the gas system. We also did maintenance on the flow meter, replaced the chlorine ejector twice, installed a new booster pump, and replaced the chloromatic valve with a new and improved model. Page 3 of 4
