6 (800) (562) A Subsidiary of the International Code Council PROPOSED ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR ADHERED PORCELAIN AC503 Proposed PREFACE Evaluation reports issued by ICC Evaluation Service, LLC (ICC-ES), are based upon performance features of the International family of codes. (Some reports may also reference older code families such as the BOCA National Codes, the Standard Codes, and the Uniform Codes.) Section of the International Building Code reads as follows: The provisions of this code are not intended to prevent the installation of any materials or to prohibit any design or method of construction not specifically prescribed by this code, provided that any such alternative has been approved. An alternative material, design or method of construction shall be approved where the building official finds that the proposed design is satisfactory and complies with the intent of the provisions of this code, and that the material, method or work offered is, for the purpose intended, at least the equivalent of that prescribed in this code in quality, strength, effectiveness, fire resistance, durability and safety. ICC-ES may consider alternate criteria for report approval, provided the report applicant submits data demonstrating that the alternate criteria are at least equivalent to the criteria set forth in this document, and otherwise demonstrate compliance with the performance features of the codes. ICC-ES retains the right to refuse to issue or renew any evaluation report, if the applicable product, material, or method of construction is such that either unusual care with its installation or use must be exercised for satisfactory performance, or if malfunctioning is apt to cause injury or unreasonable damage. Acceptance criteria are developed for use solely by ICC-ES for purposes of issuing ICC-ES evaluation reports Copyright 2018 ICC Evaluation Service, LLC. All rights reserved.
7 Page 2 PROPOSED ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA FOR ADHERED PORCELAIN TILE WALL CLADDING SYSTEM INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose: The purpose of this acceptance criteria is to establish requirements for exterior wall cladding systems comprised of porcelain tile panels or slabs adhered to aluminum extrusions to be recognized in an ICC Evaluation Service, LLC (ICC-ES), evaluation report under the 2018 and 2015 International Building Code (IBC) and the 2018 and 2015 International Residential Code (IRC). Basis of recognition is IBC Section and IRC Section R The reason for this criteria is to establish evaluation guidelines for recognition of an adhered porcelain tile exterior wall cladding system under the IBC and IRC. 1.2 Scope: This criteria covers porcelain tile panels or slabs factory-adhered to aluminum frame used as exterior wall cladding. The porcelain tile panels must be manufactured to comply with the requirements of ANSI A137.3 for back-layered porcelain tile panels. The porcelain tile panels are factory-adhered to an aluminum subframe along the perimeter and may also include intermediate framing members also adhered to the back of the porcelain tile with structural silicone sealant (adhesive) complying with ASTM C1184. The porcelain tile and aluminum subframe assembly is then installed in the field using aluminum clips and fasteners which connect to the wall framing. Other features of the wall cladding system include aluminum composite material (ACM) joint infill strips used to conceal clips and fasteners used to attach exterior wall panels to the wall framing. Recognition under this criteria will address the following: Types I, II, III, IV or V (combustible and noncombustible) construction Fire-resistance-rated and non-fire-resistance rated construction
