Water networks management optimisation / Energy efficiency Trends in the Water Industry Prof. Dr. Michael Bongards michael.bongards@fh-koeln.de 1
Cologne University of Applied Sciences - CUAS CUAS - Facts and Figures students graduates per year 100 PhD-Students 11 faculties 80 courses of study employees, thereof 414 professors Budget: 160 million Third-party and research funds: 17 Million > 200 partner institutions for student exchange programs and research cooperation
GECO C research activities Gummersbach Environmental Computing Center Water distribution systems Wastewater Treatment Plants and Sewer Systems Fermentation Plants Biogas production metabolon landfill site - Waste to Energy conversion
Water challenge Water is a rare good: CAGR Compound Annual Growth Rate IFPRI International Food Policy Research Institute The 2030 Water Resources Group / (2010)
Water challenge Water consumption Greece and EU: 100,00% 80,00% 60,00% 40,00% Greece European Union 20,00% 0,00% Urban Agriculture Industry Southern: France (1991;2006), Greece (1990;2007), Portugal (1990;1998), Spain (1991;2006)
Water challenge Challenges in Greece: Groundwater overexploitation Nonuniform temporal water availability: Water deficit in summer Nonuniform spatial water availability: Water deficit in specific regions The 2030 Water Resources Group / (2009) Koutsoyiannis et al.; Towards a Master Plan of Water Ressources; Int. Conference; Kos ; Greece (2007)
Energy challenge World Marketed Energy Consumption Energy Use by Fuel Type
Climatic change challenge Water demand in the Greater Athens region has continued to grow at an excessive rate, currently reaching 6% per year. In 2003, Greece welcomed approximately 14 million tourists. About 60% of the total bed capacity (hotels) is located on the islands. Problem: Dozens of droughts on the Greek islands in the Aegean. Prediction for : The number of days where temperature is above 35 C will probably increase by 5-10 days. Tourism season will probably increase by more than 20 (±7) additional summer days in all tourist areas of Greece. Greece is expected to have an 18% precipitation decrease.

Water Losses EPA 816-D November 2009 United States Environmental Protection Agency
Water Losses - A Water Source Revenue Water is water that is consumed and for which the utility receives payment. Revenue water includes metered and un-metered billed authorized consumption. Non-Revenue Water (NRW) is water that is not billed and no payment is received. It can be either authorized, unauthorized or result from a water loss. IWA water balance table Water Loss Control: IWA/AWWA Water Audit Method - American Water Works Association (2012)
Non Revenue Water An Overview Philippe Marin, Senior Water & Sanitation Specialist - The World Bank: NRW in Mediterranean Water Utilities: an Overview Regional workshop on NRW in the Mediterranean CMI, Marseille, January 22-23,
Water situation in Cyprus Substantial decrease in annual rainfall >20% Reduction in the runoff into the reservoirs > 40% Periods of low rainfall are becoming more frequent Demand is continuously increasing Frequent periods of low or no rainfall : , , Government forced to apply water restriction measures Drastic water cuts in irrigation Severe restrictions to domestic water supply Need for water conservation and leakage management Bambos Charalambous; Head Technical Services Water Board of Lemesos; Lemesos, Cyprus (until October 2012): Non-Revenue Water Management in Cyprus Regional workshop on NRW in the Mediterranean CMI, Marseille, January 22-23,
Water Losses - A Water Source Sharma, S. (2008) Performance Indicators of Water Losses in Distribution System, Delft, Netherlands
Water Losses - A Water Source Why is Nuremberg (Nürnberg) so good? - Well qualified workers - Large investments in infrastructure over decades - Continuous maintenance and improvement - High level automation including gapless sensor network Modern technologies make it possible to achieve this level of quality.
Trends in Automation Internet of Things
Trends in Automation Potential of ipv6 (Internet Protocol version 6): IPv6 uses a 128-bit address, allowing 2 128, or approximately addresses, or more than times as many as IPv4. The world has about 6 Billions inhabitants, So each person has 5.7x10 28 addresses available.
Trends in Automation Smart grids for water and energy Increasing efficiency of staff Continuous monitoring of water networks Logistics of maintenance in water networks
Trends in Automation Wireless sensor networks
Trends in Automation for Environment Control Smart roads Smart lightning Noise urban maps Air pollution control Fire detection Waste management Structural health monitoring Water quality Water leakages
From Big Data to Smart Data
From Big Data to Smart Data Smart Data: Decision support in a control and optimization cycle
From Big Data to Smart Data Improving water supply quality: -Optimal operation of water wells -Control of water treatment -Optimal sensor positioning -Leakage detection -Reduction of operational costs -Saving energy
Outlook Future of Automation Outlook - 1: Water problems are virulent. Water losses are wasting ressources and energy. Reducing water losses is a valuable source for water. M2M offers new automation chances. CI and Data Mining are tools to handle Big Data.
Automation is innovating rapidly! Outlook - 2: Moore s law: Computer-systems double their performance every 18 months. What will be the increase of performance in 15 years? G. E. Moore: Cramming more components onto integrated circuits. In: Electronics. 38, Nr. 8, 1965, S
