9 Good acoustic design delivers sound control and reduces background noise pollution that stems from both internal and external noise intrusion. In multi-residential construction and design, building materials must adhere to and comply with strict acoustic standards to ensure occupancy comfort and well-being. Standards like the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) play a key role in creating sustainable environments that set and ensure minimum requirements for safety, health and amenity in the specification of new and existing buildings throughout New Zealand. In accordance with the NZBC Clause G6.3.2 requires the impact insulation class of a floor to be no less than 55dB. Using ASTM E Standard Test Method for Laboratory Measurement of Impact Sound Transmission Karndean LooseLay achieves an IIC rating of 56dB. This makes it suitable for multi-rise developments and design throughout New Zealand. Hartford LLP112 9

10 Measuring acoustic performance Understanding Impact Insulation Impact sound originates when one object strikes another such as footsteps, hammering and objects falling down. It travels through a structure with little loss of energy if the structure is continuous and rigid. Transmission of impact sound can be controlled by isolation; the higher the IIC number the better the impact sound insulation. The NZ Building Code requirements are set out in Clause G6 Airborne and Impact Sound. This clause sets out the performance of building elements between occupancies to prevent undue noise transmission to the habitable space of household units. The following clauses affect impact sound: Impact Insulation Class must be greater than 55db for multiresidential applications in accordance with ASTM E G6.3.1 the sound transmission class of wall floors and ceilings, shall be no less than 55dB. G6.3.2 the impact Insulation class of floors shall be no less than 55dB. Karndean flooring reduces residential impact noises including footsteps, dishwashers and when moving furniture. Both Karndean gluedown vinyl and LooseLay are ideal for commercial applications that are most commonly located on the lower level of multi-level buildings.
