4 Speakers Biographies Peter Kendall Chairman Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board Peter Kendall farms in Eyeworth, East Bedfordshire, in partnership with his brother, Richard. 620 hectares of combinable crops are grown on the home farm and contracting and rental agreements are also operated with four local farmers. The farm has evolved over the last 15 years from a very traditional mixed farm to a totally arable unit. Peter took a degree in Agricultural Economics at Nottingham University before returning to the family business in Previously, Chairman of NFU Cereals and NFU Deputy President, Peter was elected as NFU President in 2006 and served for four terms, stepping down on 26 February Peter was appointed by the Government as AHDB Chair for a three-year term from 1 April He also sits on a range of bodies in the UK and Europe Jane King Chief Executive Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board Jane King took up her position as the new Chief Executive of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board on 1 February She is a former Editor and Editorial Director of the Farmers Weekly Group and during her time at Farmers Weekly, Jane oversaw a complete repositioning of the title, revitalising its products, developing new services and overseeing organisational change. As a senior executive at Reed Business Information (RBI) for over 30 years, Jane also has significant experience providing information and services to a range of industries as diverse as retail, health, social care, employment law and hospitality Richard Nicholls Head of Intelligence and Economics Future Foundation Richard has been Future Foundation s Senior Economist since 2008, taking over just as Lehman Brothers crashed. Since then, he has led many discrete projects guiding corporate clients in all consumer-facing sectors through the economic vicissitudes of recent times. In that time too, he has been an Account Director, responsible for Future Foundation s clients in the media, technology and telecoms sectors. In 2013, Richard also became Head of Intelligence. His multi-lingual team ensures that global clients enjoy quick and easy access to the very best data sets, forecasts and analyses. He retains his role as a contributor to nvision across its four geographies (Global, USA, EU, UK) and regularly speaks at nvision client conferences. Following his degree (PPE) from the University of Oxford, Richard took an MA in Philosophy from the Open University
5 Nick Miles Asia-Pacific Region Manager IGD Nick joined IGD s Retail Team in September 2011 and specialises in global grocery retailing. Through conducting regular international trips to markets across Asia-Pacific and Europe, Nick understands the latest global retailing developments, with his research specifically focusing on global trends, retailer strategies, format evolution, Tesco, Australian retailing and a growing focus on Asia. His core responsibilities include delivering a mixture of research outputs for IGD s Retail Analysis online service and customised reports for clients. Nick has experience of presenting to conference audiences in the UK and internationally and brings to IGD seven years of experience of working for Tesco. Nick has a BSc honours degree in Geography from Durham University Debbie Butcher Senior Analyst Market Intelligence AHDB Debbie is a Senior Analyst in AHDB s Market Intelligence division, specialising in the cattle and sheep markets. Following a degree in Economics and a period of time working for Whitbread, Debbie started her career at the Meat and Livestock Commission in 2006, becoming an Analyst in the Economics team. Debbie moved with AHDB to Stoneleigh and is responsible for delivering market information and analysis to AHDB levy payers. She is a member of the European Commission's forecast working group for beef, contributing to the UK forecast on a bi annual basis. Debbie grew up in Lancashire and has two grown-up sons Stuart Ashworth Head of Economic Services Quality Meat Scotland Stuart has been involved in agriculture all his life. Born into a Yorkshire farming family, he studied at Newcastle and Glasgow Universities before working for several years as an agricultural economist with the Scottish Agricultural College. In 2003, Stuart joined Quality Meat Scotland as head of the Economics team. His remit covers a range of topics from market prospects through policy impact assessments to understanding the challenges of climate change for the red meat industry. This involves working with the European Commission, the Scottish Government and industry stakeholders. He is a member of the European Commission s forecast working group for sheep and goat meat and has contributed to a number of EU reviews on the impact of the sheep and goat meat regime
6 Stephen Howarth Market Specialist Manager Market Intelligence AHDB Stephen joined AHDB in August 2011 as Senior Analyst, covering the pig industry, responsible for analysing and communicating the situation in the UK, EU and global pig meat market to the industry. He continues to fulfil that role, as well as managing similar work on beef and lamb. Before joining AHDB, Stephen had wide experience in socio-economic research, latterly as Deputy Chief Executive of the West Midlands Regional Observatory (part of the Regional Development Agency) Gary Ford Chief Poultry Adviser NFU Gary Ford is the National Farmers Union s Chief Poultry Adviser. He was appointed in September 2013 following five years experience in the NFU working as a Group Secretary in Staffordshire and a County Adviser, covering Worcestershire and Warwickshire. These latter roles brought him into contact with dairy and livestock farmers and gave him a good understanding of the issues in these sectors. Prior to joining the NFU, Gary worked in the poultry sector for ten years as a broiler agricultural manager working for a processor based in the Midlands. Gary s parents are beef and sheep farmers from Worcestershire Luke Crossman Acting Senior Analyst Market Intelligence AHDB Luke has been with AHDB since August 2012, after finishing his time at Harper Adams University where he studied Agri-Food Marketing and Business. He started as a Junior Analyst and has worked his way up to acting Senior Analyst within the Market Intelligence team. He focuses solely on the dairy industry, analysing the markets and communicating the implications via articles and presentations. Luke s interest in agriculture stems from his father, as well as time spent visiting and working on his uncle s dairy and sheep farm Maarten Vrolijk Researcher System Innovations Wageningen UR Livestock Research Since 2003, Maarten has been working on research projects, together with animal husbandry farmers, agri-business and NGOs, to realise a more and more sustainable agricultural production. Examples of his dairy sector projects include My Sustainability (for dairy processors), New sustainable animal husbandry, Best practices for automatic milking and grazing, reducing feed and footprint, Livestock precision farming and Climate-smart-agriculture. On a regular basis, Maarten is guest lecturer for bachelor and master students and he facilitates workshops. Before 2003, Maarten worked for the Dutch farmer organisation (LTO) and in the agri-business
