5 Improper Surface Preparation Leads to Coating Failures Despite the right coating systems being selected for the correct applications, it is often the lack of correct surface preparation and proper application procedures that will cause delamination and reduction of the coating's performance. High adhesion to substrate can resist underfilm corrosion. Loctite Polymer Composite Products can have bond strenghts to properly prepared surfaces up to 350 kg/cm 2 (approximately 5,000psi). Coatings fail mainly due to three causes: Adhesive Failure: coating detaches from the substrate, usually associated with inadequate or poor surface preparation. Cohesive Failure: coating breaks within itself instead of at the substrate. Substrate Failure: coating remains on failed substrate, where substrate shears away.
