Why biotechnology Productivity and land requirement in selected years 171,500 LAND ha/1,000,000 tons pulp YIELD m³/ha.year Seeds 133, Monoprogeny Soil and Nutrition 124, ,000 Clones 41 Biotechnology¹ 49 Potential biotech enhancement 20% Eucalyptus planted area in Brazil (000) hectares 4,153 3,230 5,171 3,745 4,378 2,966 9,231 4,694 9, % 5, Conventional breeding benefits 88,000 73,500 1, Projected eucalyptus planted area based on 70s yields Actual eucalyptus planted area 2012 Note1. Taking into account current results from late stage field trials. Source: SBS, Agricultural census - IBGE, ABRAF 4

Context of Deployment Impact of proper governance Environmental 0.96 ha reserve set aside for each hectare planted (3M ha sector wide). Planting on degraded land Protection of riparian zones 64 million metric tons of CO 2 sequestered annually 13,000 families integrated in production chain Social 1,000 municipalities $64 million invested in Social projects in % - 40% fibre sourced from outgrowers (Suzano) 22,400 ha of outgrower plantations certified 4x income per hectare compared to ranching Food Security 100% production from 0.7% of land surface ILPF (Integrated Agriculture Forestry Program) targets 70 million ha degraded pasture land 5

Rationale for Scientific and Technological Innovation Sustainable intensification of productivity World economy must be reconciled in a finite global ecosystem if natural resources are not to become binding constraint on development. Ensuring wellbeing within planetary boundaries will require enhanced resource use efficiency, whilst meeting increasing demand. Requires step changes in productivity and process efficiency and an expansion of the quality, scope and scale of products and services. Improved process efficiency and scope of products can only be achieved by increased reliance on STI. If the principal means to achieve resource use efficiency is to produce more from less through an intensification of existing practices, Which will increasingly rely on STI then: We need frameworks: To direct research to meet productivity challenges To provide governance for technology deployment, diffusion and implementation, down to the local level, and local users. 6

Sparing natural forest We need to explore whether a transition to higher productivity could avoid unacceptable environmental side effects, perhaps through low-input,, and offset predicted productivity losses due to climate change. needs to focus on productivity increases that are less dependent on high water and agrochemical use (fertilizers and pesticides) and more resilient to climate change and pests. The Living Forests Model anticipates increasing reliance on high-yield plantations for timber, pulpwood, and biomass for energy. on land that is currently grassland, shrubland, or highly degraded forest. 7

Forests and the SDGs 15.2 By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally 15.3 By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world 24

Financing the transition CLIMATE FINANCE: To reduce GHG emissions, enhance GHG sinks & reduce the vulnerability of human and ecological systems to negative climate change Total clean electric power generation infrastructure capex over the next 25 years under a 2 o C scenario presents a $12.1 trillion investment opportunity in total. GREEN FINANCE: financing of investments that provide environmental benefits in the broader context of environmentally sustainable development Challenges: - internalizing environmental externalities, - information asymmetry, - inadequate analytical capacity, - lack of clarity in green definitions. 25

Where we are Many banks and institutional investors have yet to develop the capacity to identify and quantify the credit and market risks that may arise from their environmental exposure, and therefore often underestimate the risks of brown investments and overestimate the risk profile of green investment opportunities. Partly as a result, 26

Where the finance for science needs to be targetted 27

Capacity One of the major changes in recent Development thinking is the realisation that what separates developed and less developed countries is not just a gap in resources, but a gap in knowledge Scientific capacity in Africa is insufficient even to stay meaningfully connected to global advances in science and technology 28
