Interviewing or a new professional position Key concepts for success
Discussion points How to read a new contract Benefits packages Dress for success 15 tips for having a great interview Resumes that shine How to sell yourself and skill set in different settings.
How to read a new contract
What is a Contract of Employment? The terms of your employment are usually set out in a formal document that gives written details of your responsibilities and duties. The contract binds you and your employer together legally after you have both agreed the terms of the contract.
When you get your contract it should include this information as an absolute minimum: The legal name of your employing company. Your employer's address. Your full name. The date your employment began. Your salary and how it will be calculated and when it will be paid. Your hours of work. What your holiday entitlement is. Your full job title. The period of notice you have to give.
Other information that you should be aware of but that is often not included in a contract of employment. Your employer's disciplinary, dismissal and grievance procedures. How injury is handled. How sickness or medical emergencies are handled. What your employer's view is regarding trade union membership. Teachers Unions What pension or retirement plans are available. Extra pay?
Benefits Packages
Benefits Packages An employee benefits package includes all the benefits provided by an employer. Employers are required by law (federal and state) to provide some types of employee benefits. Required benefits include social security and workers' compensation.
Optional Benefits Other benefits are sometimes provided by companies to their employees. Depending on the company, these benefits may include: Health insurance Dental insurance Vision care Paid Vacation Personal leave Sick leave Retirement plan
Whether you are job searching, deciding on a job offer, or happily employed, it's important to review what benefit coverage is provided by the company and to decide whether the employee benefit package is one that fully meets your needs. It's also important to take full advantage of what the company provides to employees.
Investigate Benefits Coverage It is much better to be fully informed before you accept a position than it is to have an unpleasant surprise later on. Employment benefits can comprise of 30%-40%, or even more, of your total compensation package so it's important to know exactly what benefits you will be provided with and to get enough benefit information to ensure that the coverage is what you need.
Employee Benefits Questions to Ask Does the employee pay for health insurance coverage? If so, how much for individual coverage and/or family coverage? Is the premium deducted from my paycheck? How much is the deductible? Can I review a summary of the health insurance plan options? What restricts and limitations are there? What about pre-existing conditions? When does coverage begin? How much sick time, vacation time, and holidays are provided? When do benefits start to accrue? What type of pension plan is there? How much does the company contribute? Is life insurance provided? Does the company offer short-term and long-term disability coverage? Are there educational and training benefits? If so what rate are they funded at?
Important Never ask these questions during the interview. Wait until you have a job offer to discuss employee benefits, either with Human Resources or the person who is offering you the job.
Dress for success
Dress for success This picture is from the old 1980 s movie Working Girl. The movie is about a woman who was a good secretary but had ambition for more. Her boss breaks her leg in a skiing accident and Melanie unintentionally steps into her world. Based on this picture what did she do so that she would be taken more seriously?
Impression Your impression starts the moment you walk in the door to the interview and ends the moment you turn your back to walk out. Interviewers will remember what you look like and if you dress for success you will leave a lasting impression.
Dress the Part A good tip is to dress as you would if you were working at the company. Before the interview, visit the company or similar workplaces to see how people in positions similar to the one you applied for are dressed.
What not to wear Denim and shorts Tank tops or crop tops Flip flops, sneakers, running shoes. Very short, tight, or low-cut clothing.
Grooming Personal grooming is just as important as what you wear. You may select the right clothes, but neglecting personal hygiene can ruin the image you wish to present. Check List Get a good nights sleep. Wear a classic or simple hair style Keep makeup to a minimum Have facial hair trimmed and neat No tattoos should be visible Brush teeth Keep jewelry to a minimum. Avoid smoking before interview.
Know where not to use you phone Some places are inappropriate for cell phone usage. While waiting for your interview. During your interview. Bathrooms of the office at your interview location. Elevators at your interview location. Avoid using your cell phone until you are out the building and done with your interview. Loose lips sink ships.
15 Tips For Your Interview
15 Tips 1. Research the industry and company. 2. Clarify your "selling points" and the reasons you want the job. 3. Anticipate the interviewer's concerns and reservations. 4. Prepare for common interview questions. 5. Line up your questions for the interviewer.
15 Tips 6. Practice, practice, practice. 7. Score a success in the first five minutes. 8. Get on the same side as the interviewer. 9. Be assertive. 10. Make your selling points clear.
15 Tips 11. Think positive. 12. Close on a positive note. 13. Bring a copy of your resume to every interview. 14. Make the most of the "Tell me about yourself" question. 15. Speak the right body language.
Resumes That Shine
Resumes that shine Incorporate industry keywords and buzzwords into your resume, but don t overdo it. Tailor your resume to the job. Different settings will look for different information. Use a modern, professional format. Make sure it is error-free and easy to read. Use a header. Keep things professional.
Resumes that shine Keep the reader s needs or settings requirements front and center. Specific skills your have for the setting Customize your resume to tell a story. Don't overuse fancy fonts and colors. Use a reverse chronological order Make it longer than one page if it needs to be. 20 years of experience might need more then one page. Supplement your resume with a cover letter.
