1 SECTION CONCRETE TOPPING This performance guide specification is part of an architectural specification is intended to provide a guideline for product selection and may not be appropriate for needs of specific projects. Use of this specification is voluntary and the user needs to edit the guide specification to fit the needs of a specific project, applicable laws and regulations, end user requirements and safety considerations. This performance guide specification provides no guarantee as to product performance, merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose. Please read the full disclaimer here. PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SUMMARY A. General: Read this Section in conjunction with other related Sections B. Prescriptive Work 1. Supply, deliver, install and warrant the work in strict compliance with the materials and workmanship requirements of the Architectural Specification. 2. Where required to prepare Shop Drawings, these shall be limited to final detailing of components, systems, etc. indicated on the Design Drawings, necessary to demonstrate their safe installation. 3. Where products are offered by the Contractor for acceptance by the Engineer, provide full supporting documentation in respect of the complete system or installation. C. Section Includes 1. Cement sand screeds. 2. Fine concrete toppings. 3. Proprietary quick-setting, self-leveling underlayment screeds. 4. Proprietary polymer-modified underlayment screeds. 5. LEED Green Building Rating System for Core and Shell Development, by U.S. Green Building Council, Inc. (USGBC). PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 PRODUCT SELECTION A. Source of Supply: Obtain products from manufacturers with at least 10 years' experience of producing similar items, and having an experienced technical advisor available for the duration of the work. B. The Contractor shall determine specific concrete topping components and application locations to ensure full installation per manufacturer's guidelines and to the acceptance of the Engineer where the flooring system bedding depth constitutes a portion of concrete topping directly on the concrete slab surface. C. Provide a troweled application or pumped application as recommended by the manufacturer for the product type to provide the appropriate working application. Where instructed by the manufacturer, provide a troweled finish at the concrete topping surface to receive the bedding for applied finish flooring as indicated in the Design Drawings and within other sections of the Architectural Specification. D. Provide one of the following types of screed, topping and underlayment for project use that are recommended by the Contractor, take into consideration the finish flooring bedding composition and recommendations from the bedding material manufacturer. 1. General: All mix proportions, base surface primers and reinforcement requirements shall be as recommended by the manufacturer. For bonded types provide a suitable bonder as recommended. a) Floating cement sand screed: Provide insulation board as necessary to complete the full installation if determined by the Contractor and manufacturer for the substrate and finish indicated. b) Bonded cement sand screed. c) Unbonded cement sand screed. d) Bonded fine concrete toppings: 1. Screed base coat mix shall be a volume ratio recommended by the manufacturer. 2

The surface finish of the screed base coat shall be tamped to receive sand cement topping. e) Proprietary quick-setting, self-leveling underlayment screed. f) Proprietary polymer-modified underlayment screed. g) Proprietary lightweight aggregate screed. 2. The thickness shall be as indicated on the Design Drawings and laid to falls/ level. 3. The surface shall be troweled to receive bedding of applied floor finish as indicated on the Design Drawings. a) Reinforcement shall be provided. 2.2 DESIGN CRITERIA A. Design Parameters: The Contractor shall determine the requirements and materials needed for the concrete topping layer in accordance with all flooring condition types and details indicated on the Design Drawings; this shall be determined where the finish flooring or roofing installation thickness necessitates a concrete topping layer to ensure the entire flooring or roofing assembly from concrete slab surface to finish floor or roof surface is at the proper overall zone thickness to terminate at the required finish floor elevation. B. The following topics shall be considered as follows in the Delegated Design for concrete topping. 1. Appropriate screed thickness to complete the required flooring zone total assembly thickness as indicated on the Design Drawings. 2. Concrete slab base preparation. 3. Screed and substrate adhesion. 4. Structural movement joints, control joints and construction details. 5. Method of laying and establishing drying out times and protection. 6. All interfaces. 7. Manufacturer's written recommendations. 2.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Structural Movement 1. All concrete toppings are to withstand all movements of the structure under all design loads or combination of loads as specified in the Structural Engineer's specifications and Deflection/ Movement Reports, without any damage, cracking or breaking up of the concrete topping layer. 3

4 2. All concrete toppings are to accommodate all structural expansion joints and construction control joints. 3. Weight of all concrete toppings, including associated reinforcements, etc. shall be coordinated with the structural design of the building to ensure that maximum weights, when wet, shall not be exceeded. 4. Loads due to floor finishes over the concrete topping shall be accommodated along with loads imposed during normal service conditions and maintenance operations. All loads shall be confirmed and accepted by the Engineer. B. Proprietary Products 1. Where any concrete topping shall be described as proprietary, all materials, the mix composition, proportions, mixing methods, minimum and maximum thicknesses and workmanship shall be in accordance with the recommendations of the Contractor's selected manufacturer even though the manufacturer shall not supply all of the required materials. 2.4 MATERIALS A. Low Toxicity Materials: All building materials shall comply with the low toxicity material requirements as stated in PBRS Credit SM-1 within the UPC's Pearl Building Rating System: Design & Construction document. 1. To meet this PBRS Credit, all building materials must not contain materials or compounds with over 1% of constituent materials with the designated R-phrases listed in the UPC document. Submit confirmation that materials comply with the EU Risk Phrases (R-Phrases) Directive 67/ 548/ EEC. Annex III. B. Concrete toppings: Concrete toppings shall comply with the relevant parts specified in the International Building Code. C. Recycled Material Components 1. Provide recycled aggregates that comply with the requirements as stated in PBRS Credit SM-10 within the UPC's Pearl Building Rating System: Design & Construction document and as indicated within the Masdar Siemens HQ Estidama KPI Tracker document. 2. The Precast Subcontractor shall illustrate and prove that at least 80% of all reinforced steel, by weight, has a minimum of 90% post-consumer recycled content. 3. At least 15% of all specified aggregate to be used for structural precast shall be recycled. Refer to Section Structural Precast Concrete for additional information regarding Estidama and LEED requirements. 4

5 4. In addition comply with LEED CS-MR Credit 4: Recycled Content given in the USGBC document. D. Regional Material Components 1. Provide materials sourced from the region that comply with the requirements as stated in PBRS Credit SM-9 within the UPC's Pearl Building Rating System. 2. In addition comply with LEED CS-MR Credit 5 Regional Materials requirements given in the USGBC document. E. Fine Concrete Topping Materials 1. Factory-prepared and dry-packaged mixture of graded aggregate, portland cement or blended hydraulic cement; plasticizers; and other admixtures to which only water needs to be added at Project Site. a) Compressive Strength at 28 Days: Manufacturer standard in accordance with ASTM C109/ C109M. F. Fine Concrete Topping Curing Materials 1. Evaporation Retarder: Waterborne, monomolecular film forming; manufactured for application to fresh concrete. 2. Absorptive Cover: In accordance with AASHTO M 182, Class 2, burlap cloth made from jute or kenaf. 3. Moisture-Retaining Cover: In accordance with ASTM C171, polyethylene film or white burlap-polyethylene sheet. 4. Water: Potable. 5. Clear, Waterborne, Membrane-Forming Curing Compound: In accordance with ASTM C309, Type 1, Class B, 25% solids content, minimum. G. Concrete Topping Related Materials 1. Semi-rigid Joint Filler: Two-component, semi-rigid, 100% solids joint filler in accordance with ASTM D Joint-Filler Strips: In accordance with ASTM D1751, asphalt-saturated cellulosic fiber or ASTM D1752, cork or self-expanding cork. 3. Portland Cement: In accordance with ASTM C150, Type I or Type II. 4. Sand: In accordance with ASTM C Water: Potable. 6. Acrylic-Bonding Agent: In accordance with ASTM C1059, Type II, non- 5

6 redispersible, acrylic emulsion or styrene butadiene. 7. Epoxy Adhesive: In accordance with ASTM C881/ C881M, Type V, two-component epoxy resin, capable of humid curing and bonding to damp surfaces, of class and grade to suit requirements. a) VOC Content: Adhesive products shall comply with VOC limits as stated in PBRS Credit LBi-2.1 within the UPC's Pearl Building Rating System: Design and Construction document. 1. Architectural Sealants: Maximum VOC is 250 g/ L. 2. Multipurpose construction adhesive: Maximum VOC is 70 g/ L. 3. Indoor Carpet Adhesive: Maximum VOC is 50 g/ L. 4. Ceramic Tile Adhesive: Maximum VOC is 65 g/ L. 5. Cove base adhesive: Maximum VOC is 50 g/ L. 6. Sub-floor Adhesive: Maximum VOC is 50 g/ L. 7. Plasterboard and wall panel adhesive: Maximum VOC is 50 g/ L. b) In addition comply with LEED CS-IEQ Credit 4.1 Low Emitting Materials - Adhesives and Sealants requirements given in the USGBC document. H. Proprietary quick-setting, self-leveling, polymer-modified or lightweight aggregate underlayment screed: Manufacturer's standard products. I. Accessory Materials 1. Primer and Bond Coat: Manufacturer's standard products. 2. Insulation: Manufacturer's standard product. Refer to Section Thermal Insulation for additional requirements. a) The insulation shall be inert, durable, rot-proof and vermin-proof and not be degradable by moisture, extreme temperatures or water vapor. b) The insulation shall not bulge, sag, delaminate or detach during its installation or when poured-in-place during the life of the Work. c) Insulation shall have zero Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP), be CFC and HFC free and have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than five. d) The selected insulation shall comply with all relevant standards and be certified accordingly. J. Fine Concrete Topping Fabrication 1. Void Formers: Where determined for use by the Contractor, provide void former 6

7 insulation blocks including steel load spreaders and straps laid over mesh layer. 2. Provide manufacturer recommended steel fastenings to tie straps to screed and slab. K. Reinforcement: Reinforcement in concrete topping shall be specified in accordance with International Building Code and manufacturer's recommendations for concrete topping type to the acceptance of the Engineer. L. Separating layer for unbonded concrete screeds: Where indicated on the Design Drawings, provide 1000 gage polythene separating layer on the structural base and dress up the walls with a 6mm polythene backer in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. M. Movement Joints: Coordinate movement joints in concrete topping layer with the movement joint layout for the associated finish material covering the work of this Section in accordance with the layout developed by the Subcontractor and with locations of movement joints in concrete slab substrate. Contractor shall determine depth of movement joint installation with all parties. 1. Control joints shall be movement joints recommended in writing by the manufacturer to accommodate floor finishes as indicated on the Design Drawings and shall generally comprise the following: a) Metal side plates shall be either aluminum or stainless steel as recommended by the manufacturer to suit the service conditions. Finishes shall be to the acceptance of the Engineer. b) Wire ties shall be situated in accordance with the manufacturer's written recommendations. 2. Perimeter movement shall be allowed for at the edges of screeds against solid walls. A 6mm closed cell compressible polyethylene strip shall be installed to suit the screed depth with a 2-part polysulphide sealant to the acceptance of the Engineer. Refer to Section Joint Sealants. N. Mixing: All screeds, toppings and underlayments shall be mixed in accordance with the manufacturer's written instructions and the following: 1. For Bonding Slurry: Mix Portland cement with water to a thick paint consistency. 2. For Concrete Topping: Mix concrete topping materials and water in appropriate drumtype batch machine mixer or truck mixer. END OF SECTION 7
