1 IAEA International Atomic Energy Agency Technical Meeting on Remediation Techniques and Strategies in Post-Accident Situations June 2016 Press Room Conference Building M, IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Austria TM Chairperson: Mr Wolfgang Weiss Purpose. The purpose of this Technical Meeting is to share knowledge and experiences of Member States on a wide spectrum of aspects related to remediation and recovery of contaminated areas, addressing the requirements of the IAEA Safety Standards, and in particular of the General Safety Requirements, Part 3 on Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources. The TM will include the discussion of: (i.) Environmental monitoring and analytical techniques for characterization of contaminated sites; (ii.) Establishment of radiological criteria; (iii.) Application of radiation protection principles in post-accidental situations; (iv.) Assessment of radiation doses to members of the public living in affected areas; (v.) Identification of appropriate remedial actions to reduce external and internal exposures, if deemed necessary; (vi.) Verification of the success of remedial actions; (vii.) Aspects of occupational exposure during remediation activities; (viii.) Strategies for communication with the public; and (ix.) Considerations for management of waste generated during remediation. The Technical Meeting will summarize existing experience in the field of remediation, highlighting lessons learned and good practices, and will ultimately serve as a basis to identify further needs and to provide support to Member States. The anticipated outcome of the TM will be a compilation of presentations and extended abstracts by IEXs, along with a paper summarizing international experiences, which will ultimately serve as a starting point/planning tool to develop a document providing guidance on implementation of remediation to underlie DS468. 1
