Product type is a designation used to distinguish between the method of operation of the window, as well as associated materials and components, e.g. awning, casement, sliding, etc. The materials and components of the test sample assembly shall be of the same type and size, and shall have identical methods of construction as those to be used in production. NOTE: It is recommended that in the case of a timber specimen the manufacturer may present the specimen in a finished state, that is painted or stained, subject to the notation on the test report Documentation of test sample Technical drawings and any other relevant information shall be made available to the test laboratory prior to the installation of the test sample. These documentations shall include the following: (a) Expected rating or wind pressure capacity of test sample assembly in accordance with AS 2047 for Australia and NZS 4211 for New Zealand. (b) Assembly drawing showing elevations and sections of test sample. These shall be at least at the ends and point of maximum deflection. NOTE: Typically this should be the mid-span of structural members and swinging door stiles. The location of the probes should be as close to the ends of the structural member as possible. The framework to support the displacement measuring devices shall be rigidly fixed, independent of the test sample. Before tests are commenced, the location of all displacement measuring devices shall be agreed between the client and the test laboratory Test procedure The test procedure and loading sequence shall be as follows: (a) (b) (c) (d) An initial pressure equivalent to 50% of the test pressure shall be applied to the test sample and held for 1 min. This shall be taken as a settling-in take-up period. The pre-load pressure shall be removed and the zero position of the displacement measuring devices recorded. Differential pressures in the same direction shall then be applied across the test sample in not less than four approximately equal increments until the test pressure is reached. The pressure shall be held for at least 1 min at each pressure increment, and the readings of the displacement measuring devices recorded before the pressure is increased. The differential pressure shall be removed and after 2 min the zero displacement readings shall be taken. (e) The direction of the pressure device, or test sample shall be reversed and Steps (a) to (d) shall be repeated using the opposite test loading. 3.4 Calculation of displacement/span ratio Where a structural member of the test sample is effectively supported at its ends only, its mid-span displacement and resultant displacement/span ratio under load shall be calculated as follows: (a) The mid-span deflection (d) of each member is given by the following equation: d = D m D e... 3(1) where D m = maximum displacement of member (generally at mid-span) D e = average of net end displacements (b) The resultant deflection/span ratio is given by the following equation:
10 DRAFT ONLY 8 DRAFT ONLY S Deflection / span ratio = 1:... 3(2) d where S = span of member between points of support (measuring devices) d = mid-span deflection as described in Item (a) 3.5 Test report In addition to the information required by Clause 2, the following information shall be reported: (a) Reference to this Standard, i.e. AS/NZS Clause 3 Deflection test. (b) Location of all displacement measuring devices. (c) Spans of relevant members. (d) Displacements and mid-span deflections at each pressure increment. (e) Resultant deflection/span ratio. (f) Statement of compliance of the test sample with the performance requirements of AS 2047 for Australia or NZS 4211 for New Zealand. 4 OPERATING FORCE TEST 4.1 Scope This Clause sets out a method for determining the operating force for sliding and bifold sashes of windows designed for installation in all classes of buildings. 4.2 Apparatus The following apparatus is required: (a) Mounting frame of a size to fit the test sample window. The following forces shall be noted and recorded: (a) That capable of setting the sash in motion. (b) That capable of maintaining the motion after the sash frame is clear of the perimeter frame of the test sample. Each sliding sash of the test sample shall be tested separately. For horizontally sliding sashes, the force shall be applied either at the position of a fixed handle, or at one-third of the height of the pull stile above the sill for continuous or adjustable handgrips. For vertically sliding sashes, the force shall be applied at the sash pulls or at the midpoint of the bottom rail.
11 DRAFT ONLY 9 DRAFT ONLY Folding Sashes Each type of sash panel roller (trolley/carrier) and guide assembly shall be tested as shown in Figure 4.1. Intermediate assembly End assembly Intermediate assembly (a) Even panel system (b) Odd panel system FIGURE 4.1 DEFINITION OF INTERMEDIATE AND END ASSEMBLIES Where the sample is wide enough that it contains more than one type of roller/guide assembly then each assembly shall be tested separately and the worst case figures shall be used, e.g. a six-panel folding assembly contains two intermediate assemblies and one end assembly so both the intermediate assemblies would be tested and the worst case figure used. The force measuring device shall be attached to a hinge handle. If no handle is present, the force measuring device shall be attached to the panel at approximately the midpoint of the panel as shown in Figure 4.2. End assembly Intermediate assembly Force gauge mounting position FIGURE 4.2 DEVICE ATTACHMENT POINT FOR HANDLE-LESS SYSTEM
12 DRAFT ONLY 10 DRAFT ONLY For odd panel configurations, the end loose hinged panel shall be unlocked and folded back to the position shown in Figure 4.3(a). All other locking devices at the hinging point between panels (as shown in Figure 4.3(b)) shall be released and the panels pushed open by approximately 150 mm to un-toggle any over centre cam action of the system. 1 1 Push Push 4 (a) To open uneven panel system (b) To open even panel system FIGURE 4.3 FOLDING SEQUENCE FOR ODD AND EVEN PANELLED SYSTEMS The operating force shall be applied at the nominated point in a direction parallel to the movement of the carrier assembly along the guiding and supporting tracks. The test shall continue until the carrier assembly panel almost contacts the adjacent panel for opening and until the panels are almost closed for closing. Each carrier assembly shall be tested three times for both opening and closing and the force required to initiate movement and maintain movement shall be measured and recorded. The average value of the three measurements shall be used as the maximum forces for initiate and maintain, for both opening and closing. 4.4 Test report In addition to the information required by Clause 2, the following information shall be reported: (a) Reference to this Standard, i.e. AS/NZS Clause 4 Operating force test. (b) The force required to set the sash in motion for each sliding or folding sash. (c) The force required to maintain the sash in motion for each sliding or folding sash.
