Part 1: Introduction Remote Food Security Monitoring
Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping We ask: who is food insecure or vulnerable? why are they food insecure or vulnerable? where do they live? how many are they? what should be done to save lives and livelihoods? how is the situation likely to evolve, and what are the risks?
We provide: Economic Analysis Geospatial Analysis Food Security Monitoring Post Shock Assessments Thematic Analysis
Why Remote Food Security Monitoring? Cost Speed Flexibility Security frequency
mvam KOICA project Project title: scaling up mvam for real-time food security and nutrition monitoring for refugees and internally displaced people in Sub-Saharan Africa Project period: 2 years, 1 Jan Dec 2018 (2 years) Objective: Empower information exchange with marginalized populations (IDPs and refugees) Food security information collected through latest mobile and satellite technologies 10 target countries: CAR, DRC, Kenya, Malawi, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda Target Direct Beneficiaries: Refugees and IDPs in vulnerable communities
KOICA project focus in Nigeria 1. Strengthen WFP Nigeria two-way communication systems and food security data collection using IVR, Free Basics and a Chatbot. mvam 2. Use satellite imagery to monitor population dynamics in conflict affected populations and trend analysis on vegetation patterns to understand livelihood recovery.
Part 2: mobile Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping Remote Food Security Monitoring
mvam project 1)Uses mobile technology to remotely monitor household food security and nutrition, and food market-related trends. Mobile Surveys Respondents are contacted on their mobile phones Data is anonymized, cleaned and analyzed Reports Databank Humanitarian decision making process 2) Provides automated two-way communication system to give people in affected communities access to real-time information for free. Respondents contact WFP on their mobile phones Information on WFP projects Food prices Dates of food distributions
Mobile data collection Advantages: Cost Speed Flexibility Security Challenges: Biases Data Volume Questionnaire Length

mvam data collection and two-way communication tools
mvam tools Web-based
CATI = Computer assisted telephone interviews Already active in Nigeria. The most widely used mvam tool. Suitable for both data collection and two way communication (helplines). Already used in Nigeria to monitor food security.
IVR = Interactive Voice Response also called «robo-calls» is a chain of pre-recorded messages. Mainly used for two-way communication systems. Being installed in Maiduguri to complement the existing helpline.
SMS = Chain of text messages (SMS). One SMS for each question. Used during the Ebola outbreak in west Africa. Good tool to collect quantitative information (such as prices). Not currently used in Nigeria.
Web surveys = Online forms that are circulated over the internet. Tested in Haiti after the hurricane
Free Basics = Websites that are available for free with no data charges* Initiative by Facebook that aims to bring free internet to the 2/3 of the world s population who don t have access to it No need to have a Facebook account to access it Now available in 60 countries Currently being set up for testing in Nigeria * This can also be done independently from Free Basics by working with local telecommunication companies
Free Basics
Chatbot = A chatbot is a chain of automated messages, powered by rules and sometimes artificial intelligence, that you interact with via a chat interface. Currently being developed by WFP HQ in partnership with InSTEDD (will be available early 2018) Initially, it will be accessible through Facebook Messenger Planning to test it in Nigeria in early 2018
