In general, all best practices to prevent clubroot should be employed even when using clubroot-resistant hybrids. 90 Protect Your Fields from Disease 90 Seed- and soil-borne disease can rob your crop of its yield potential before it s even gotten out of the ground. While many diseases are present, they can affect and impact crop types differently. Seed treatments which control the diseases that take away your yield potential are the products you need to target. As Bayer SeedGrowth specialists, we are providing retailers and growers with information in order to assist you in effectively using treatments to improve your crop and your yield, says Brittnye Kroeker. Not every crop is susceptible to the same diseases, and not every disease has the same effect on different crops, says Kroeker. For example, a persistent myth is that soil-borne diseases need moisture and cool weather to attack, but some diseases such as fusarium and C. sativus flourish in dry, warm weather, whereas pythium takes off under wet and cool conditions. However, you know that the only thing predictable about weather is that it is unpredictable. In order to help your crop thrive despite what may happen in-season, a treatment can help protect the plant from the ground up. A good starting point is to have your tested at a lab to get a full understanding of what you are dealing with going into the season. Seed testing will look at the vigour and germination potential of your, and offer a full fungal scan through Petri dish testing. Kroeker says Petri dish testing shows a good picture of what you can expect from that. Many times, you may see lots of disease in the Petri dish, but you really need to concentrate on the ones that are important for that crop, she says. So for cereal, if you don t see pink, fusarium is not an issue, and what you might see in the Petri dish are some storage or secondary diseases that won t impact your yield. It s important to know what you are looking for. Not every crop is susceptible to the same diseases, and not every disease has the same effect on different crops, says Kroeker. For example, rhizoctonia in Western Canada can cause major losses in canola and peas, but has shown to have no impact on wheat plant stands. 91 91 Protect Your Fields from Disease While rhizoctonia on wheat has been receiving a lot of attention in the United Kingdom and in the U.S., it is not presently an issue for western Canadian cereal growers. There are 13 different strains for rhizoctonia, and AG8 the strain causing issues in the U.K. and the U.S. has not been found in Canada, she says. The AG8 strain that infects cereals and causes yield reductions is not present in Western Canada due to the harsher environment here. There are two major strains that we do get here, and although they can be found in most major crops, they are only a financial issue in pulses and canola. In order to see the impact of AG2.1, the most virulent strain present in Western Canada, we inoculated canola and wheat with the disease. While there was a big stand reduction in canola, there was little impact on wheat. treatments Early scouting also helps you learn what is in your soil and can help guide treatment decisions the following year. Dark roots or brown lesions on the roots or coleoptile are early indicators of disease. After emergence, monitoring establishment and plant stand counts can also hint at levels of disease issues in your crop. Later in the season, reduced tillering and lower counts are all signs you are dealing with a - or soilborne disease. Kroeker says the best treatments are the ones that attack a range of diseases that have been proven to impact yield in a particular crop. We know fusarium is a problem for cereal growers. Raxil PRO contains three active ingredients, including prothioconazole, which is very strong on fusarium, and growers are very familiar with this molecule from using Prosaro fungicide, she says. Our level of confidence in this product is very high because of the proven performance of the active ingredients. Both field and lab testing have consistently backed that up. 92 Breaking through Barriers 92 Treating your cereal offers numerous, proven advantages throughout the season, but for many growers, applying a treatment can pose several obstacles. However, the ever-increasing presence of - and soil-borne diseases, combined with the ongoing advancements in treatment technology, makes overcoming these obstacles well worth your while. Many growers can t recall their fathers or grandfathers applying treatments, and of the ones who do, they remember older formulations that were difficult to apply and even harder to clean up, says Allan Anderson, a specialist with the Bayer SeedGrowth team. These past experiences remain the most significant roadblock for using treatments. However, today s treatments are much easier to use and provide you with solid emergence and a healthy, strong crop right from the start. Let s take a look at some of the concerns identified by growers, and how they can be addressed: treatments Concern: Applying a treatment is messy. Solution: With ongoing formulation and packaging improvements, we re continually making treatments easier for you to apply. In addition to using a more sterile, closed system, formulations are now water-based to reduce dust and minimize buildup on equipment for easier application and cleanup. Whereas older formulations had a sticky syrup-like consistency and were difficult to deal with, today s micro-dispersion formulations can simply be rinsed off with water. Concern: Calculating proper application rates can be difficult. Solution: There are three main things that can affect coverage of your treatment, says Graham Hastie, Portfolio Manager, Cereals SeedGrowth with Bayer. Flow of the chemical Flow of your grain Seed density Most people will test the flow of chemical or know a certain pressure on the pump that provides the correct flow; others will test the flow of grain or control the flow of grain. Solution: Anderson says it can be challenging to measure the quantity of being used, so improper application rates are common. But it is usually better information rather than new equipment that is needed. Sometimes it s a matter of making restrictor plates or doing a quick calibration on your pump and nozzle. Even using a stopwatch can go a long way in increasing your accuracy. Once you understand the mechanics behind it, it s an easy thing to do. In almost every case, I have been able to help growers do a better job with their existing equipment, he says. treatments Concern: How do I keep my tank and truck clean once it has had treated in it? Solution: Water-based formulations are easy to clean, but diligence is necessary to make sure all treated and dust are removed from trucks and augers. Grains Canada recommends cleaning all equipment, bins and vehicles after ing and again before harvest to make sure there is nothing left in your equipment. Proper cleanup of all transportation and handling equipment is essential to avoid contamination of other crops and harvested grain. Concern: It is impractical to store and dispose of treated. Solution: Treated should be stored in a cool, dry place, and excessive heat should be avoided. Leftover treated needs to be disposed of to avoid cross-contamination. Treated can be buried away from water sources, depending on your local regulations. Bags from treated should not be reused, and you should check local requirements on how to dispose of packaging. You can also take part in bag collection programs, where available. We can discuss quality and how important good quality is to getting your crop off to a good start, says Anderson, but whether you are using farm-saved cereal or soybean, or if you invest in certified, you need to protect it against - and soil-borne diseases, which can rob you of your yield potential. Nine times out of ten, you get better emergence, with more plants per square foot, setting up the crop for all the stresses it may face later in the year.
