3 FUNGICIDES PAY: FAR AND WIDE The results are undeniable. Across a wide range of geography, weather, soil conditions and disease pressure, your fungicide application continues to provide improved quality and a superior return on investment. IT PAYS TO SPRAY The yield potential of your high value pulse crop is worth protecting and your cereal crops at a high grade can fetch a strong return on investment. The Bayer Fungicide Demonstration Strip Trials (DSTs) follow a rigorous set of protocols to achieve the highest standard of consistency and provide you with local and trustworthy results, confirming for 8 consecutive years that It Pays to Spray. Visit ItPaysToSpray.ca for more information on the high standards and local results of the Bayer Fungicide DST program and how a fungicide application can benefit your operation.

4 THE RESULTS With 8 consecutive years of yield and quality data from grower-cooperated trials, the Fungicide DST Program is the largest dataset of its kind in Western Canada, offering irrefutable proof that fungicides consistently contribute to your bottom line. New for 2015, we have expanded the fi eld scale trial program to include pulses. Dry or wet, low or high disease pressure, fungicides continue to provide a great return. To calculate the potential return on your fungicide application, please visit the Bayer Fungicide ROI Calculator at cropscience.bayer.ca/roicalculator All results have been averaged to show direct, head-to-head comparisons between fungicides across a wide variety of geographies and environmental conditions over the past 8 years.

8 YEAR OVER YEAR: FUNGICIDES PAY In dry years, in wet years, in heavy disease locations to minimal disease-risk areas, Bayer fungicides continue to prove their worth. Some growers believe that fungicides will not provide a good return in lower moisture seasons, but our research shows that it can pay to spray, even in dry years.* *Note: Dry year is defi ned as <85% of average growing season precipitation With a $5/ac. application cost, and a wheat price of $6.50/bu., growers will break even with a yield of 2.6 bu./ac. for Folicur EW and of 3.9 bu./ac. for Prosaro at SRP. On average, even in dry conditions, both Folicur EW and Prosaro meet or exceed break-even yields and provide the added benefit of improved quality.

14 MAKING THE GRADE Although all fungicide products help to maintain high grades, Folicur EW or Prosaro applied at heading time are a clear choice to attain the highest grade possible. As little as 0.25% fusarium-damaged kernels (FDK) in your CWRS can downgrade you to a 2, with anything above 0.8% moving you down to a 3. 16 DON AND FDK REDUCTION IMPACT ON QUALITY Fusarium head blight continues to be one of the most dreaded diseases among cereal growers and the number one source of downgrading in harvested grain. Fusarium produces a mycotoxin called deoxynivalenol (DON) on and within the grain, which can have negative health implications for human and livestock consumption. Even at relatively low levels, fusarium-damaged kernels (FDK) are unacceptable for many end-use markets. FUSARIUM INFECTED BARLEY FUSARIUM INFECTED WHEAT

18 PROSARO WHERE QUALITY MEETS QUANTITY Prosaro provides unsurpassed protection from fusarium head blight (FHB) and the best defence against the broadest spectrum of leaf and head diseases in wheat and barley. With two different fungicide active ingredients (tebuconazole and prothioconazole), Prosaro provides both quick and long-lasting preventative and curative protection to eliminate existing infections and prevent new ones from developing. The result is a healthier, more productive, higher yielding cereal crop.

THE PROSARO ADVANTAGE Powerful disease control including first-in-class FHB protection Effective DON reduction to protect your grade Unmatched leaf disease control Two powerful active ingredients Preventative and curative disease protection Higher test weights, plumper kernels and superior yields

20 FOLICUR EW FREEDOM TO FIGHT DISEASE ON YOUR OWN TERMS For maximum yield and quality benefi ts, the optimum time to apply Folicur EW is head timing. However, with its wide window of application and exceptional control of the most serious leaf diseases, Folicur EW fungicide is a fl exible option to protect your cereals from fl ag leaf, all the way through to head timing. When time gets tight during spray season and your crop advances beyond the fl ag leaf stage, Folicur EW is the clear choice. Other fungicides that contain a Group 11 active ingredient (strobilurin) applied at head timing can actually increase DON and FDK in heavy FHB years, negatively affecting the grade of your crop.* *Sources: Uniform Fungicide Studies, Langdon 2011, Scott Halley and Amanda Arens, North Dakota State University-Langdon Research Extension Center, Langdon, North Dakota. Six years of replicated Barley DSTs show that Folicur EW has provided an average 7% increase over the untreated check, when applied on barley. THE FOLICUR EW ADVANTAGE Wide window of application (flag leaf to head timing) with no risk of increasing DON or FDK levels when sprayed at head timing Fusarium protection, comprehensive leaf disease control and unmatched rust protection Higher total kernel weight and fewer FDKs Registered on wheat, barley, oats and soybeans Protective and curative activity for rapid absorption and translocation within the plant

22 A NEW STANDARD IN PULSE DISEASE PROTECTION Pulse crops can be vulnerable to a host of diseases, but the 2015 Fungicide DSTs now show there s a way to signifi cantly increase your crop s potential and decrease your risk. Delaro fungicide was put to the test for the 2015 growing season, and results show that it provides fi rst-class disease protection to give you the most out of your pulse and soybean crops. With both preventative and curative properties, Delaro has the most comprehensive pulse fungicide label on the market. In addition to providing the longest-lasting protection from diseases like mycosphaerella blight, aschochyta blight and anthracnose, only Delaro delivers effective control of white mould to ensure your pulse crops reach their full yield potential. DANGEROUS PULSE DISEASES Disease management is an important consideration for pulse and soybean growers in Western Canada. Diseases such as ascochyta blight, anthracnose, white mould and others can cause major damage to your bottom line. Planning for a fungicide application proactively can help ensure your pulses reach their yield potential. LONGEST-LASTING, WIDEST DISEASE SPECTRUM Put your best foot forward and protect your pulse and soybean crops from all key diseases on the fi rst pass.

23 PULSES 2015 DEMONSTRATION STRIP TRIAL RESULTS PULSE TIMING GUIDE Delaro should be applied at the beginning of fl owering or at the fi rst sign of disease for fi eld peas, lentils and chickpeas. In soybeans, Delaro should be applied at the fi rst signs of disease from early fl owering (R1) to complete pod fi ll (R5) optimum timing is R2-R3. No other product has a spectrum as wide as Delaro against all key pulse diseases. PULSES

28 GETTING THE BIGGEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SPRAY A CEREAL FUNGICIDE? Providing an exceptional return on your investment, cereal fungicide applications are worth planning for as an input in Canadian cereal production. Not only does it protect your yield, it also maintains the grade and quality of your harvested grain. Traditionally, the practice has been to apply cereal fungicides at fl ag-leaf timing in order to protect the fl ag leaf for yield potential. However, newer independent and in-house fi eld research data is showing that head timing will provide a greater increase in yield. When leaf disease pressure is low to moderate leading up to fl ag-leaf timing, waiting for head timing (approximately 7 to 10 days) will often provide increased yield and crop quality. The best way to know if you can wait is to continually monitor your fi elds. If there is signifi cant disease on the upper leaves at fl ag-leaf timing, you need to take immediate action. However, if you only see minimal levels of leaf disease, you should delay spraying until the head has emerged and started to fl ower. This application timing will still provide fl ag leaf protection and protect the head against FHB to maximize your yield and quality potential. If you are only budgeting for one fungicide treatment, application at head timing will give you the best of both worlds and the most effi cient spend of your fungicide dollars. For more information on fungicide application timing and to see trial results in your region, visit ItPaysToSpray.ca

29 GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR FUNGICIDE APPLICATION Here are a few considerations to help maximize your return on investment with a fungicide application at head timing. Increase seeding rate: This helps to mitigate some variability in crop staging by increasing the number of main stems and reducing the amount of tillers, thereby making it easier to target the crop during the stage where it is most susceptible to infection. Nozzle selection: A forward/backward nozzle formation (i.e. a nozzle setup that has a spray pattern angled to the front and also to the back), is superior to a single vertical pattern to fully cover both sides of the head. Speed: The sprayer speed, pump pressure, and droplet size relationship needs to be understood by the operator in order to obtain the best possible coverage. Operators should consult the nozzle application charts available from manufacturers and adjust sprayer speed in order to maximize coverage. Droplet size and pressure: Growers should target a medium to coarse droplet size to achieve optimal coverage on the head. Fine droplets can be very susceptible to drift which leads to off-target deposition. Boom height: Ideally, the boom should remain 12 to 15 inches above the crop canopy to ensure maximum head coverage and avoid any drift. Maintain high water volumes: 10 gallons per acre is the minimum recommended water volume. However using higher water volumes (15 gallons per acre) increases the ability to achieve optimal coverage on the head to maximize performance of the fungicide. To learn more about implementing an Integrated Pest Management program to control disease, consult your local agronomist or Bayer representative.
