Building Traceability Solutions from the Ground Up ID Expo August 2007 Yvonne Tollens
Overview Have a brief company review Examine the macro focus of traceability Explore how to create the right incentives to get quality, reliable, and consistent data for an effective traceability system
ComputerAid Overview Deep personal history in the cattle industry ComputerAid was started in 1986 by Ralph and Yvonne Tollens One stop technology shop for software development, hardware, and all aspects of technology in the cattle industry Team of quality professionals Consulting Services Project Management Software Development Technical Training Support Our Clients
System development for all segments of the cattle industry DG Professional CattleBytes TM, Rancher s Advantage Age Verification AV.Export Cattle Investment System, Several Value Chains, Carcass Management, Animal Management Software, Packer level work Many custom systems.
People pay for our software because it brings them benefits Every year over 2 million head are handled on software we have developed And over 200,000 head have been exported using our software We have used data to produce value added, auditable records, for performance, health, conversion, and much more, at group and / or individual animal levels for many years We build our solutions to allow for the movement of data from and to many types of systems
Hierarchy of Information Systems Executive Info.Systems Strategic decision making tools. Decision Support Systems Analysis tools to improve profitability. Management Info. System Improved management tools to optimize operational efficiency. Transaction Systems Time saving, user friendly, improves staff s ability to do job, returns valued information, results in accurate data collection.
Reasons for traceability CFIA / USDA Animal Health and Food Safety National Cattle Organizations Domestic & International Markets Private Value Chains Improving Profitability Primary Producer Auction Stocker Feedyard Packer CFIA / USDA needs traceability for food safety and controlling disease
Reasons for traceability CFIA / USDA Animal Health and Food Safety National Cattle Organizations Domestic & International Markets Private Value Chains Improving Profitability Primary Producer Auction Stocker Feedyard Packer National cattle industry need access to domestic and international markets
Reasons for traceability CFIA / USDA Animal Health and Food Safety National Cattle Organizations Domestic & International Markets Private Value Chains Improving Profitability Primary Producer Auction Stocker Feedyard Packer Private value chains return value from total chain participation
The benefits are all macro system benefits CFIA / USDA Animal Health and Food Safety National Cattle Organizations Domestic & International Markets Private Value Chains Improving Profitability Primary Producer Auction Stocker Feedyard Packer
The chain is made up of distinct segments Primary Producer Auction Stocker Feedyard Packer
What s in it for me? Primary Producer Auction Stocker Feedyard Packer Need to answer at the individual level
Failure to address this question can lead to: Lack of participation Data integrity questions Failure to update data Higher audit costs Poor compliance

The solutions are found at the micro level Who is the primary person to observe, create, measure, use the information we need to collect? How can we help that person to do their job easier, better, faster, simpler?
Balance the responsibility and the effort Even the best intentioned people fail to delivery accurate information People have to prioritize and they just can t quite get to the job because it is not fundamental to their business. Canfax information has value for all who participate, but takes time
Well design system leads to sustainability Processing cattle is arduous, but effective application of technology combined with timely information creates engagement
The increased profit argument is risky The value of an age verification for the Japanese market fluctuates with a continually changing regulatory environment. Helped by a widely used and available traceability system Client recognize the value of CCIA and a traceability system to access foreign markets
Quality data for traceability system is a byproduct, not the goal for the producer By regulation, all tags from cattle exported must be retired from CCIA DB. Built AV.Export software Initially $15/head to do dentition on cattle and then do paperwork for export Now can collect CCIA tag at processing, age verify at re-implant and reduce the costs of exporting. Tag retirement is written into the software
Our clients, and every member of their team, demand real, personal, value from every system we build for them. Should a traceability system any different?
ComputerAid Professional Services Ltd
It s all about understanding the right incentives for each person The old food is attracting bugs Your room is detracting from the value of our home My friend Allison is going to come by and we want to use your computer
