1 Mercator Media Press Release 25 January START - Mexico investing $50-70m in mariculture Investors in mariculture will be wise to look at the Mexican region for development and expansion in the fish farming industry. The Mexican Government is pledging US$50-70 million into mariculture and infrastructure. The growth opportunities are abundant for growing and established farmers to capitalise on this region, including businesses involved
2 in the supply chain, from logistics, containers, equipment, technology firms to the final value added product. The Mexican Government believes that mariculture offers an unrivalled opportunity for efficient and sustainable food supply, with modest costs and low environmental impact. The federal and regional governments of Mexico have partnered with the established Offshore Mariculture Conference, held in Ensenada, Baja California, to promote this investment and commitment to the industry. Chaired by Dr. Pablo Arenas Fuentes, Director General of The Mexican National Institute for Fisheries, INAPESCA, the Offshore Mariculture Conference 2017 offers a full programme of technical seminars with high-level, respected speakers within the mariculture industry. Key themes of the conference will cover a wide variety of topics, case studies and practical applications. This includes all recent developments in offshore mariculture, the farming of finfish in Mexico, opportunities for the Mexican market, studies into processes at the breeding and hatchery level, marketing and value added opportunities for sustainably raised offshore fish, the offshore farming business: investments and considerations, developments in offshore technology and discussions on traditional and innovative fish nutrition. The technical seminars are presented by key academics and professionals with a deep, vested interest in mariculture and sustainability. First to speak will be Michael Rubino, Director of the Office of Aquaculture at NOAA Fisheries Service, who will focus on offshore ventures, developments in US waters in the Gulf of Mexico, California, the mid-atlantic and Western Pacific. The first session will also see aquaculture specialist Michael D Chambers from the University of New Hampshire discuss small scale, multi-tropic aquaculture for coastal communities. Feeding and nutrition for farmed fish will be presented by Alejandro Buentello, Director of Animal Research at Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM), covering practical feeding and alternative sustainable sources. The use of soybean as a replacement, is fast becoming a viable and sustainable alternative to traditional fishmeal. Donald Allen Davis (speaking on behalf of the US Soybean Export Council) will reveal details of the research study by Hubbs Seaworld Research Institute. The vast range of notable speakers at the conference, including Dr Duk-Hyun Yoon from Aqua-int. Consulting, Darko Lisac from Refamed, and renowned aquaculture expert Neil Sims, co-founder and co-ceo of Kampachi Farms LLC & founding President of the Ocean Stewards Institute confirms the calibre of this event and that it must not be missed by those involved in offshore mariculture, fish farming and the supply chain. The Offshore Mariculture Conference includes one and a half days of technical visits to an offshore tuna ranching facility, a mussel farm, a tuna and striped bass processing plant, Todos Santos Island striped bass offshore farm, a Baja yellowtail offshore farm and an
3 abalone farm. These technical visits are a valuable resource for investors to gain real insight into the logistics, production and quality of the farming opportunities in the region. Key industry players understand that this is an important and lucrative opportunity. The Offshore Mariculture conference has garnered the support and sponsorship of BioMar, Badinotti Group, FISA, AKVA Group, Realtime Aquaculture, the Illinois Soybean Association, Baja Aquafarms and the US Soybean Export Council. Government investment in maritime infrastructure reflects the global demand for fish, making mariculture a high growth area, particularly for sustainably sourced fish and a reduced gap between fish and market. Mariculture in Mexico is on the upward curve; therefore, investments are best in early stages of market saturation. The key markets for Mexico include the United States (2 nd largest market in the world), Canada, Asia and Europe. Baja California is a relatively untouched area for mariculture, which is in a marked growth period. The municipality of Ensenada, with an extension of 1,114km of littoral, has over 74,000 hectares of coastal lagoons suitable for aquaculture. The crystalline waters are also nutrient rich and provide optimum conditions for farming fish species such as striped bass, yellowtail, Bluefin tuna, Mediterranean mussels, abalone and many more. The focus on the ecological impact of overfishing and increasing global demand means that offshore aquaculture can support the demand for fish whilst adhering to environmental sustainability guidelines. The Offshore Mariculture Conference offers all businesses involved in the fish farming supply chain a unique opportunity to connect with key decision makers and gain invaluable insight during the technical seminars and visits. This event is jointly organised by Mercator Media Ltd and CESAIBC in Ensenada, Mexico, and forms part of a series of successful Offshore Mariculture Conferences organised in previous years by Mercator Media Ltd across Europe.
