4 Macuna Family - Leguminoceae Cowhage (Mucuna pruriens L.) Having wide distribution in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. It is cultivated in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, South East Asia and Malaysia. 4

5 Importance of Macuna Medicinal uses: All parts of cowhage possess valuable medicinal properties. It is used against a wide range of disorders, such as urinary tract, neurological and menstruation disorders, constipation, edema, fever, tuberculosis, ulcers Parkinson s disease, Helminthiases like elephantiasis According to the Ayurveda roots are bitter, thermogenic, anthelmintic, diuretic, emollient, stimulant, aphrodisiac, purgative, febrifuge and tonic. Its recently documented ability to increase growth hormone and testosterone 5

6 Other than medicinal uses: 1. Pods are also used as vegetable 2. The seed has high viscosity starch which acts as a thickening agent for food products or as an adhesive in the paper and textile industries 3. Cowhage has potentially important nutritional value as a rich source of protein and it has both food and feed potential. 4. The beans are consumed either as such or along with cereals in several parts of India 5. Grown as cover crop 6. Cowhage can be grown as an intercrop in the plantation crops 6

19 Genotype IIHR Selection-2 and Arka Dhanvantari was better in terms of growth parameters, total fresh biomass and total dry biomass. IIHR Sel-2 and Arka Dhanvantari are long duration genotypes. Hence, these lines may be recommended in arecanut plantation as the crop is known for weed suppressing ability and adds higher biomass. 19
