Opportunities for research on organic agriculture and agroecological approaches under Horizon 2020 Organic Innovation Days Brussels, 17 November 2017 Annette Schneegans European Commission DG Agriculture and Rural Development
Features of Horizon 2020 research - SC2 Increased budget for agricultural research as compared to FP7 More emphasis on open and non-prescriptive topics Co-management of SC2 between AGRI (mainly agriculture) and RTD (mainly food, forestry, marine/aquatic issues and biobased industries) Agricultural research and policy more closely connected Innovation component strengthened throughout H2020 Interactive innovation model promoted under SC2: Follows EIP AGRI approach and is implemented amongst others through SC2 multi-actor projects and thematic networks 2-year programming and rolling out of SC2 based on extensive consultation exercise and development of a long(er) term agricultural research strategy
Research on "Organic" under SC2 No specific heading/focus on organic food and farming research Research on organic agriculture addressed in (few) specific topics Research topics for the organic sector arise from a) needs following new organic regulation or b) ETP Organics research agenda General approach to request research which addresses both conventional and organic farming ("mainstreaming" of needs of the organic sector) Organic research also benefiting from major support to research on agroecological approaches and crop diversification in SC2 Work Programmes
Research specific to organic sector in SC2 Work Programmes SFS /2017: Organic breeding Increasing the competitiveness of the organic breeding and farming sectors Focus in 2016: Increasing availability of organic seeds Project LIVESEED: Focus in 2017: Organic breeding; breeding for organic varieties 2 projects expected to be funded SFS : Organic inputs contentious inputs in organic farming 2 projects expected to be funded Topics on agro- and functional biodiversity, legumes and grassland also relevant; several topics requesting to work on both conventional AND organic
Research for the organic sector in SC2 Work Programme SFS /2019: Improving animal welfare Scope A : Organic and low-input farming (IA) Minimum: To work on a) alternatives to mutilations and Killing of male day-old chicks and b) supply of robust, slow-growing poultry breeds for outdoor rearing
Other relevant topics for organic farming in WP SFS Biodiversity in action: across farmland and the value chain Scope A (2018) Below-ground biodiversity interaction with plants Scope C (2020) From agrobiodiversity to dynamic value chains LC-SFS Microbiome applications for sustainable food systems SFS New and emerging risks to plant health SFS LC-SFS LC-SFS Scope B (2019) CE-SFS Towards healthier and sustainable food (minimal processing methods) Alternative proteins for food and feed Climate-smart and resilient farming Efficiency and resilience of mixed farming and agroforestry systems Innovative and citizen-driven food system approaches in cities SFS Sustainable intensification in Africa Scope A (2019) African Farming Systems, sustainable intensification pathways
Other relevant topics for organic farming in WP CE-RUR : Closing nutrient cycles Scope B (2019) Bio-based fertilisers from animal manure Scope C (2020) Bio-based fertilisers from other by-products of the agrofood, fisheries, aquaculture or forestry sectors RUR : practice Thematic networks compiling knowledge ready for
Learning-for-innovation platform, networking, case studies, experiences across Europe Crop diversity projects joining forces DiverIMPACTS, Diverfarming, DIVERSify, ReMIX, TRUE, LEG-VALUE, IWMPRAISE started in 2017 and are forming a cluster to work closely together and deliver Portfolio of crop diversification solutions, e.g. new varieties, crop protection solutions, machinery A network of field experiments across biogeographical regions that demonstrate benefits of crop diversification in terms of productivity, ecosystem services and market opportunities Economic and organisational schemes and incentives to promote new business models along value chains Development of new products or products with enhanced value for the food/feed or industrial sectors (e.g. hemp for isolation boards in the building sector, field peas and other pulses for the food sector) Knowledge-intensive services to farmers (advice, decision-support, precision agriculture) to help manage and monitor their transition to more diversified cropping systems. Multi-criteria assessment tools to capture/monitor performance of diversified cropping systems at the rotation, farm, value chain, and territory levels
