Importance of EbA: Development and Highlights 2014/ 2015: 2008/ 2009: 2010/ 2011: Concept introduced in UNFCCC COP 14, Originally from CBD 2012: EbA as funding priority at IKI, EbA Compilation of Information - Nairobi Work Programme Database 2013 Roundtable for the technical Workshop on EbA in Nairobi First funds from new IKI funding area biodiversity disbursed NWP - Technical WS on EbA, Dar es Salaam First Informal Climate Finance Dialogue on EbA by BMUB / EC UNEA resolution on EbA EbA mentioned in INDCs IKI s EbA portfolio likely to reach 100m Many side events on EbA 5

Content 1. How does the IKI work? 2. Importance of EbA for BMUB? 3. Relevance of EbA in the BMUB IKI portfolio 4. Lessons learned, challenges & opportunities 10
4. Lessons learned Many low-cost EbA techniques/approaches exist Often green-grey options rather than textbook EbA Low-cost and no-regret character of many EbA measures is a success factor for EbA, but more ambitious, if conducive policy frameworks exist EbA measures can work well, but are not necessarily being prioritized by politicians Until recently, little knowledge on EbA (approaches, cost-benefit ratio etc.) was available, this has improved considerably but is still quite heterogenous 11
4. Role of IKI in promoting EbA Continue generating systematic knowledge and exchange - Across regions and ecosystems e.g.: in Asia, Latin Ameria, Africa in mountains, forests, mangroves - With key actors and partners e.g.: IUCN, UNEP, UNDP, CI, TNC, GIZ, SPREP, FEBA etc. - Adressing open questions, identifying gaps and synthesiszing & bundling existing knowledge: e.g. with recent global projects by IIED & GIZ Demonstration of solutions and input for negotiations Mainstreaming EbA in institutions and policy processes 12
4. Opportunities for EbA in the UNFCCC context NAPs as entry points for EbA using experiences from the ground to inform national adaptation planning Role of ecosystems acknowledged in different work programmes (e.g. Work Programme of the Warsaw Mechanism for Loss and Damage, Nairobi Work Programme) has to be filled with substance Adaptation will be a strong pillar in the Paris agreement EbA could benefit from this 13
