Cold Storage Management System for Farmers based on IOT Mr. Deepak Venkatesh 1,Ms. Megha Tatti 2,Ms. Prithvi G Hardikar 3,Mr. Syed Saqlain Ahmed 4, Mr. Sharavana K 5 1,2,3,4,5 Department of ISE, HKBKCE, Nagawara, Bangalore, Karnataka , India Abstract:- India is one of the largest producers of agricultural products having diverse agro-climate zones across the country with vast range of agricultural products. The reprehensible storage results in high losses in grains, 30% of fruits and vegetables grown. Natural contamination of food grains is greatly influenced by environmental factors such as type of storage structure, temperature, moisture, etc. During storage, quantitative as well as qualitative losses occur due to insects, rodents, and micro- organisms. To address the issues of the above concern, we propose Cold Storage Management System (CSMS) for farmers that will implement a framework based on IOT (Internet of Things) technology by using heterogeneous IOT devices. The system involves various parameters such as crop fertility, temperature stability and stable humidity for longer time to protect the integrity. The proposed information system also analyzes the data to report abnormal status of crop yield during the monitoring process. So, the cold storage management system with IOT can be a ground-breaking solution operated with low cost in short time interval, hence enhancing the crop availability / obtain-ability throughout the year. Keywords:- IOT, CSMS, Sensors, Crop yield. I. INTRODUCTION DOI: /IJRTER BH05J 556
A great number of organizations all over the world such as [1]Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are studying the enormous problem of postharvest food losses. Much of the developing world lacks access to affordable refrigeration systems for pre-cooling, refrigerated transport, cold storage, or freezing during postharvest handling and distribution of perishable foods. As a consequence, developing countries tend to lose 40 to 50% of their total production of horticultural crops, fresh fish, milk and dairy products before consumption. These food losses occur mainly during the period from harvest to retail marketing and are due to changes in physical volume (i.e. weight loss, decayed or damaged and discarded foods) or economic value (i.e. quality losses due to poor appearance or color changes), and often result in loss of nutritional value, shorter shelf life[1]. Hence to avert such losses technology places a very important role in the preservation of Agro and Non-Agro food products. Effective monitoring of temperature, humidity and other environmental conditions within a cold storage or warehouse has become one of the important field in research and development in many developing nations across the world. In this project, we demonstrate how technology can be utilized in cold storage and warehouse for preventing loss of food grains and food products. Here we are creating an android application which receives all data from hardware and display it. The received data is stored in database by using web server concept. Once the manager login he can see the related information from database. [2]A web server in the device provides access to the user interface functions for the device through a device web page by using internet. A web server can be embedded into any appliance and connected to the Internet so the appliance can be monitored and controlled from remote places through the browser in a desktop by using its application with normally connected to local All Rights Reserved 557
Fig 1: Cold Storage System. II. WORKING PRINCIPLE OF [3]The system mainly consists of monitoring nodes, router nodes, the control centre node and the Management Centre (PC), web service. The warehouses or cold storage fresh food areas generally are divided into several small scale units, which are close to each other[3]. Monitoring nodes consisting of sensors are the leaf nodes of the network, mainly responsible to collect data such as light, temperature, humidity and other environmental factors that help prevent foodstuffs and food grains from perishing or decaying. All these nodes pass vital environmental information obtained from different sensors to a Central node via wireless communication. The Central node is responsible for passing the information to Management node. [2] The Central node is replicated using Android application based cell phone and the Management node is replicated using Laptop, which makes it perfect client-server architecture[2]. Fig 2: Working Principle Of A Cold Storage Management System. III. OBJECTIVES OF To prevent the quality loss of crop yields in order to help the farmers. To monitor the maintenance of the crop yields and reduce the time management for FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization). Cold chain management system will increase crop availability throughout the seasons. To Increase the heterogeneity of yield and easily available to farmers at low cost in the field of agriculture. To enhance the revenue of both farmers and the government. Farmer can use the low cost technology to preserve their yields. The farmer and organization can review the status of crop yield and time span of the food products is extended for a longer All Rights Reserved 558
IV. METHODOLOGIES OF 1. Qualitative vs Quantitative approach The methodology of CSMS is used to preserve the quality parameter of crop such as (decay time, temperature parameter, sensor parameter etc.) for longer period, hence enhancing the crop availability throughout the year. CSMS helps to facilitate the farmers to sell and cultivate the quality of yield whenever customer requirement encountered. The quantitative approach used will improve the crop storage capacity for the farmers as well as FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) at larger scale. 2. Descriptive vs Analytic approach The methodology of CSMS uses analytical approach as it has the facts and information already available. We analyze the current status of crops and take appropriate measures to prevent crop loss. In the descriptive approach, the behavior of crops is evaluated by surveying in different agencies, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) and food storage yards. The classification of sensors: Electro stat sensor Electromagnetic sensor. The electromagnetic sensor used as a methodology to identify kinds of sensor to solve, control, measure, and storage system. Types of sensors used Cold Storage Management System _Temperature Sensor Cold Storage Management System _Humidity Sensor Cold Storage Management System _Light Dependent Resistor(LDR) Cold Storage Management System _Comparator circuit(smoke sensor) 3. Applied vs Fundamental approach The methodology of CSMS is the action based on research conducted at various food sectors. Applied research aims at finding a solution for immediate problem faced by different agricultural organizations and food sectors. CSMS model solves economical problems faced by farmers due to harvest loss by preserving the quality of food products in cold storage for a longer time. 4. Conceptual vs Empirical approach The methodology of CSMS uses empirical approach as it is based on the observation done by evaluating yields in CSMS. This enhances the crop availability throughout the year. This approach aims at preserving the quality of food products and meets the economical requirements. 5. Client and Server Architecture In CSMS Client-Server architecture, laptop being used as server and Android device being used as client. We use client-server architecture as another methodology. Client sends the request to server. Server contains all the required information regarding the crop yield in the CSMS compartment. The server sends requested information to the client/ farmer to access, review and monitor the agricultural All Rights Reserved 559
V. IMPLEMENTATION OF SENSORS TABLE 1: COMPARISON OF GENERAL PURPOSE OF SENSORS AND THEIR IMPLEMENTATION IN THE PROJECT TYPES OF SENSORS GENERAL PURPOSE IMPLEMENTATION _TEMPERATUR E SENSOR _HUMIDITY SENSOR CSMS Temperature sensor detects the change in temperature. Humidity indicates the presence of water in air. CSMS Humidity sensor senses the moisture. maintain the temperature required for a specific crop in the compartment of the cold storage. maintain the amount of the moisture levels of the food products in the cold storage. _LIGHT DEPENDENT RESISTOR(LDR) LDR( lightcontrolled variable resistor). The resistance of a CSMS LDR decreases with increase in incident light intensity. In the dark, CSMS LDR can have a high resistance. In the light, it can have low resistance power in the cold chain storage. Decreases activity of micro-organisms. Reduces transpiration: lessens water loss, lessens shriveling. Reduces respiration: Lessens perish-ability and natural senescence. B) DISADVANTAGES OF CSMS Security lapse: Tampering of device, stealing of food grains System failure may also take place in the absence of power to the entire unit attached to the vehicle. VI. CONCLUSION This project is designed for managing items stored in the warehouse. The business system is tuned to food habits and convenience of rural and urban folks of the previous generation. The safety and nutritional quality of frozen products is to be emphasized only when high quality raw materials will be used, good manufacturing practices to be employed in the preservation process, and the products kept in accordance with specified temperatures.
