3 In collaboration with Interest and experience in Postharvest Establishment of Amity International Centre for Postharvest Technology and Cold Chain Management (AIC) with the following Mandate: Two-year Masters Degree Program in Postharvest Technology One-year Post Graduate Diploma in Postharvest Technology Doctoral program in PHT Workshops/Training programs. Participation in collaborative research Development of Innovative projects to promote horticultural production, postharvest handling of produce, processing and marketing of fruits and vegetables crops. (A Draft proposed MoU regarding possible future collaboration between Postharvest Technology Research & Information Centre, UC Davis and Amity University has been worked out which awaits a final signing of agreement ) Chairman of AIC participated as a resource person in a series of workshops held in 4 metro cities sponsored by USTDA ( ) entitled Building India s Cold Chain Infrastructure During the workshop the concept of starting a Center on Postharvest Technology & Cold Chain Management was mooted. Chairman was invited to participate in The Institute organized by World Food Logistics Organization (WFLO) at Norman, Oklahoma Feb. 9 13, Amity University Organized a One day workshop on Horticultural Cold Chain Management on March supported by WFLO, IARW and The Peoples Group, Ltd., USA and sponsored by Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Govt. of India. Theme of the workshop : (i) Postharvest Technology, (ii) Food Safety Issues (iii) Refrigeration Engineering and Design and (iv) Cold Chain Management. The main speakers in PHT were Dr. Adel A. Kadar, Dr. Lisa Kitinoja and Dr. Susanta K. Roy In November 2008 (14 20) a One week, Indo US Bilateral Workshopcum Training on Postharvest Technology, Cold Chain Management and Food Safety Issues was held at Amity University which was supported by Indo US Science & Technology Forum and Co Sponsored by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Govt. of India. Roy Richmond Cold Storage, USA Scientist-Inchagre, CFTRI, Mysore Prof. Emeritus, Amity University Sponsored by Organised by Co sponsored by Indo-US Science and Technology Forum A Short course on Cold Chain Operations was organized (April 13-15, 2009) Jointly by ASTIF, GCCA, USA, USDA and National Horticulture Board, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation, Govt. of India. Amity University was selected by WFLO as a its partner in the project entitled Identification of Appropriate Postharvest Technologies for Improving Market Access and Incomes for Small Farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The project which is in its final stages has carried out field studies on 14 fruit and vegetable crops with the help of 27 graduate students and a host of faculty belonging to the AIC and other allied institutions. The core faculty of this Centre comprises besides the Chairman, Prof. Susanta K. Roy, Professor Emeritus ; Mr. Navin Nainwal, Assistant Director and Dr. Neeru Dubey, Sr. Lecturer Directors of Allied Institutions are also providing able support in various activities of the Centre as follows : Amity Institute of Food Technology : Facilities for teaching, research and training in Food Processing with the help of pilot plants etc. Amity Institute of Organic Agriculture : Strong linkage with farmers organized nearly 20 training and demonstration programs funded by the Central Government. Amity Centre for Extension Services: Organized workshops /trainings to the farmers of District of Ghaziabad under its Agricultural Technology Management Agency. (ATMA) One such program is going to be held in November in which 100 farmers of District Gautam Budh Nagar will be participating in a one day program dealing with nutritive values of fruits and vegetables, minimizing postharvest losses and marketing, supported under UP DASP. Amity Science, Technology & Innovation Foundation : A soil testing laboratory is being set up at Manesar campus (Haryana) with the support of the State Government.
4 Amity Institute of Bio-Organic Research & Studies is working on an effective method for controlling diseases caused by Alternaria species Amity Institute of Rural Management : Adopted 28 villages in Haryana and 40 in Madhya Pradesh under Providing Urban Amenities In Rural Areas (PURA) scheme Amity Institute of Microbial Technology, has well established, internationally acclaimed Centre on symbiotic mycorrhiza for augmenting yields and protection in various crops. Amity Centre for Bio-Control & Plant Disease Management is actively involved in demonstration and training of farmers on their fields in the area of soil amendment for control of nematodes and other fungal diseases. Amity Institute for Environmental Toxicology, Safety and Management Working on a project funded by the Ministry of Environment & Forest which deals with pesticide residues on vegetables cultivated in National Capital Region. Amity Institute of Biotechnology is running several projects related to genetic engineering in crop plants. Main administrative and resource persons of the Center : Dr. Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Institutions is the main pillar providing fullest support in the activities of the Center. Dr. Sunil Saran, he carries with him 5 decades of teaching, research and administrative experience and is working as Chairman of the Center and Sr. Vice Chairman, ASTIF. He also holds top positions in various other Institutions of Amity and Sr. Scientific Advisor to the Founder President. Prof. Susanta K. Roy, who is with Amity as Professor Emeritus for the last one year is not only a leading scientist in postharvest technology recognized all over the world but has also dedicated himself to help marginal and small farmers through his lifetime achievements in this area and his continuing interest in innovative research. Mr. Navin Nainwal, who has joined Amity as Assistant Director, carries with him over 15 years of experience of working at the grass-root level for the benefit of farmers in the areas of (i) organizing Farmer s Self Help Groups/ Associations/Clusters. (ii) Postharvest Technology related to Litchi, Apple, Mango and other fruits and vegetables. (iii) Establishing Centers for pack houses and processing of fruits and vegetables. Dr. Neeru Dubey, is working as Sr. Lecturer, Amity International Centre for Postharvest Technology & Cold Chain Management. She has acquired nearly 8 years of experience working on various projects related to postharvest technology. Her five year stint at Global AgriSystem, one of India s top NGOs in Agriculture and a close collaborator of Amity, has equipped herself with extensive knowledge on problems facing the marginal and small farmers of the country and how these can be solved. Mrs. Laxmi Raman, is working as Project Support Officer. She handles enormous load of administrative and technical communication besides providing excellent support in preparing background material for all seminars, workshops and other academic activities of the Centers General areas of potential contribution as future partner: All aspects of postharvest technology under the leadership of Prof. Susanta K. Roy with particular emphasis on innovative methods: (i) of produce storage in Zero Energy Cool Chambers of various sizes and containers with evaporative cooling system for transport. (ii) solar drying of fruits and vegetables to overcome glut in production and value addition. (iii) processing fruits/vegetables, juices using low cost technology for enhancing nutritive qualities and value addition. The allied institutions can be very useful in the areas of (i) Rural Management for farmer outreach. (ii) Food Processing (iii) Bio-Control (iv) Soil Testing for micro nutrients (v) Mycorrhiza applications (vi) Soil amendments (vii) Pesticide residues for various crops (viii) Development of crop varieties resistant to abiotic stress Amity having its campuses spread over large area of the country, each campus can have an active Establishment of Centre for Integrated Postharvest Management (IPHM) at each campus of Amity Amity University Campuses at Lucknow and Jaipur are situated in a rural locale. Can have strong laboratories for demonstration and training in food processing Amity can rightly take pride in its: World class infrastructure hassle-free administrative system Event Management of professional standard Free from red-tapeism Amity University Noida campus : Development of a strong Center on Postharvest Technology and Cold Chain Management for teaching, research and trainings.
