The Wheat Initiative and Expert working group (EWG) Wheat phenotyping to support wheat improvement EPPN meeting Barcelona Bettina Berger, Hélène Lucas 12 November 2015
How it all started G20 agricultural ministers agreed on importance of wheat for food security need for a concerted effort of global wheat research and breeding community to boost wheat improvement The catch: big increase in investment wasn t offered but support provided to wheat community to define priorities where funding should be invested make the most of the money that is available
Wheat Initiative Vision and Mission Vision: a vibrant global wheat research community sharing resources, capabilities, data and ideas to improve wheat land productivity, quality and sustainable production Mission: develop a global Strategic Research Agenda and support its implementation through coordinated actions, knowledge and resource sharing and efficient investment
All countries and companies welcome! 16 countries, 9 private companies, 2 CGIAR Centres
Facilitating delivery by leveraging synergies and collaborations SB oversees activities of WI ICC representatives of funding bodies of member countries (e.g. BBSRC, GRDC) RC representatives of research community of member countries
Expert Working Groups Established Wheat Information System Genetics and genomics of Durum wheat Wheat breeding methods and strategies Wheat phenotyping to support wheat improvement Wheat plant and crop modelling Newly approved Control of wheat pathogens and pests Adaptation of wheat to abiotic stress Global wheat germplasm conservation and use community Nutrient use efficiency Improving wheat quality for processing and health Under development Agronomy
The Wheat Initiative in summary The Wheat Initiative is A science-led initiative A way to bridge national and international programmes A mechanism for the wheat community to identify gaps, and to define and update research priorities An information platform for institutions to establish investment priorities An opportunity for public & private funders to support international programmes Self-funded through members The Wheat Initiative is Not a research programme Not competing with existing national or international initiatives Not a funding entity
From a Vision Document to a Strategic Research Agenda
The Strategic Research Agenda Challenges and aspirations Research Needs Priority actions
Role of phenotyping outlined in SRA Standardised phenotyping protocols for e.g. abiotic stress tolerance and NUE programs Low cost field phenotyping for wide deployment Network of field phenotyping platforms to test core germplasm Education and training need for EWG in this area
Linking experts in phenotyping and wheat research Plant phenotyping community (facilities, centres, xppns) EWG Wheat Phenotyping Wheat research & breeding community (yield potential, abiotic stress, NUE.)
Overview of EWG Wheat Phenotyping 50 members, representing 21 countries Chair B. Berger, Co-chairs Uli Schurr and José-Luis Araus Forum for exchange of expertise in wheat phenotyping and network with colleagues Provide guidance on funding priorities for wheat phenotyping Work on position paper how can phenotyping support wheat breeding? Input into SRA and implementation of SRA Phenotyping EWG is providing expert advice to other EWGs (e.g. abiotic stress, NUE)
Geographical spread of members
Activities to-date Proposal to Wheat Initiative in 2013 Call for membership in 2014 (still open) Contribution towards SRA and WI activities First face-to-face meeting Dec 2014, Frankfurt Networking opportunity Gaps and game-changers in wheat phenotyping Position paper (ongoing) Interaction with other initiatives (phenotyping, wheat) Second face-to-face meeting Barcelona 2015 Implementation and funding of research priorities identified in SRA Protocols / guidelines Low cost phenotyping Network of field platforms Alignment with phenotyping community
