2 A]. News Flashes: 1. Sugar factories in Maharashtra [South], Karnataka & Gujarat started during end Oct & early Nov. 2. The Cane rate in Sangli, Kolhapur region has been resolved amicably 3. Sugar Commissionarate [Maharashtra] has issued campaign starting permission to around 63 sugar factories in Maharashtra state. 4. It is predicted that sugar production in Maharashtra would increase about 60 % compared to last year production. B].Visits to sugar factories by our team for advice and technical discussion and suggestion AGRICULTURE TEAMS: (1) In the month of Sept 2017, agriculture expert team visited Sant Tukaram SSK on 19 th Sept. for follow up of the earlier work done and work shop for farmers of village in the operational area of factory. Following were participated in the work shop and guided the workers for improvement in the sugar cane cultivation and production. 1. Dr S M Pawar 2. Dr S H Shinde 3. Dr P B Shinde 4. Mr M V Bokhare (2) During Oct 2017, following team visited another factory Shri Nath Mhaskoba Sugar Factory on 13 th Oct for followup of earlier workshop and advice on PILOT project of increasing the sugar cane productivity in that area. 1. Dr. Subhash Shinde (3) Agriculture Team comprising of following experts visited Khandala Taluka Vikas Mandal, at Khandala on 29 th Oct for guidance on Sugarcane Varietal planning, selection of soil health and management. 1. Mr. M V Bokhare TECHNICAL TEAMS: (1) During Sept 2017, Technical team of following experts visited M/s Jayawant Sugars on their request to study the off seasonal work and suggest anything is to be done. Team visited and after careful study advised some points which would be carryout before starting for betterment of plant working.

Mr Aher W R (2) Second team of following experts visited M/s Viswasrao Naik S S K on 13 th Sept, on their request for study of plant and suggestions for better working of plant during forth coming season. Following team visited, 1. Mr Kulkarni M R 2. Mr Ghodgaonkar S V 3. Mr. Kharade U A 4. Mr.Kale.U.M 5. Mr.Shinde.S.D 6. Mr.Shrikant.B.H 7. Mr.Thete.N.V 8. Mr.Bhojraj.S.K 9. Mr.Kadam.S.F 10. Mr.Kaledhonkar.V.R (3) Another team consisting of following experts visited M/s Dharasiv Sugar on 20 th and 21 st Sept 2017, on factories request to study the plant and suggest/ advice about for the better working of plant and machinery and rectifications if any of the overhaul done during off crop. After the visit the report consists of some suggestions and advice were sent to them to carry out the modifications, rectifications. Following were visited the unit, 1. Mr. Kaledhonkar V G 2. Mr. Patil B N (4) The technical team of following visited M/s Coper Sugars, Gujrath on clients request to study the plant overhauling and suggest for better working of unit during season. Accordingly visited the plant from 10 th to 12 th of Oct 2017 and studied the plant along with the factories technical team. Report of changes desired based on past performance is submitted. 4 C]. New Executive Secretay : Dr. Suresh M Pawar, has joineddsta as Executive Secretary from 1 st Nov 2017 in place of Mr S B Deo, whose contract is about to. Dr. Pawar is graduated as B.sc (Agri) from College of Agriculture Pune, M P K V Rahuri in 1978 and Post-graduation, M Sc (Agri) in Plant Physiology from same University in He has obtained fist class in his acadamic. He did his Ph.D. in crop physiology from U. A. S. Dharwad (Karnataka) and received Gold Medal for being in 1 st in Subject during I. Acadamic : Worked as Asstt. Professor, Associate Professor and Professor from Dec1983 to 31 st May Taught U.G.(B.Sc Agri.), P.G.(M.Sc. Agri) & Ph.D courses to the students. Guided 30 P.G. students (M.Sc. Agri & Ph. D.) for their research projects. Formulated syllabus of crop physiology, Seed Technology & Environmental Science for U.G. & P.G. courses. II. Research. (i) Sorghum ( Ph.D Scholar, UAS, Dharwad, to ). The research topic for Ph. D. - Physiological Indices for High Yield and Improving Yield Potential in Rabi Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. monech) was completed. (ii) Sugarcane. The brief highlights of the research in sugarcane field are formulating the sugarcane breeding programme and identified the good sources namely com0261, MS0202, CoM9516, MS0211 etc., for further sugarcane breeding work. Recommended physiological intervenes for higher cane and sugar yield. (iii) Important Milestones in sugarcane Research & Achievement. Identified and released high sugar content Sugarcane variety Co (Phule Savitri) for Suruand Pre-Season planting for Maharashtra during Developed Sugarcane variety CoM 0265 which was released during May 2007 in Joint Agresco Committee of Maharashtra. This mid-late variety is giving 25 % higher cane and Commercial Cane Sugar (CCS) yield than the ruling sugarcane variety Co This variety is also resistant to Red Rot and Wilt diseases. This variety is suitable for planting in all three seasons and specially suitable for salt affected soil in Maharashtra and Peninsular zone of India

5 Developed Sugarcane variety MS during which is early maturing high cane & sugar yield, resistant to diseases & pest. This variety is released for commercial cultivation in Maharashtra during Paper published of DSTA Annual Convention 2015 received Late Mangal Singh Gold Medal Award. III. Extension : He has published about 130 papers at various platforms and published around 10 books/ articals too. He has attended many Radio and TV shows with regards to agricultural developments and discusstions. IV. Administration : Apart from above he has vast experience of administration, research work and Extension Work. He has received many awards from various institutions and Government among these important are: V. Awards : 1. Gold Medal for Ph.D. work & being 1 st in subject in Mangalsing Gold Medal Award of DSTA for Best Research Paper in DSTA Convention Mother Teresa Gold Medal Award from Global Economic Progress Research Association, New Delhi during On behalf of DSTA, we welcome him and wish a brighter and useful tenure for institution and Sugar industry. D]. Laboratory Activities : We have advanced Laboratory dedicated to research work as well as the analysis of various samples received from Sugar factories. At Laboratory following research work has been carried out / under review till date: Research work: 1) Role of Polyphenol Oxidase enzyme in color development of sugarcane juice. (Under guidance of Mr.V.V.Jogdand) (completed) 2) Preparation of activated charcoal by using bagasse, presumed and red lead (Geru). (Under guidance of Dr. A.N.Gokarn) (completed)

6 3) Physiological and Biochemical Studies in Promising Genotypes of Sugarcane. ( Under guidance of Dr.Snehal Joshi): Sent request letter to Dr. S.M.Pawar Sugarcane specialist Padegaon sugar research institute as well as Director of research Agriculture University Rahuri for collaborative research work. (still under process) 4) Pretreatment of molasses for value addition to industry(under guidance of Dr.Mohan Dongre) (completed) 5) Humic acid generation from biomethanated spent wash. (Done by Pallavi Dhote Under guidance of Dr.Mohan Dongre) (completed) 6) Raw sugar refining by using metallurgical waste. (Under guidance of Dr. A.N.Gokarn) (completed) 7) Analysis of Bagasilo from hot juice filtration for its validation. (Under guidance of Dr.Mohan Dongre) (completed) 8) Studies in enhanced recovery of caramel from distillery spent wash. (Done by Pallavi Dhote & Archana Yeole Under guidance of Dr. A.N.Gokarn): Research paper published in The Deccan Sugar Technologists Association (INDIA) proceedings 62 nd Annual Convention 12 th & 13 th August ) Project proposal submitted to SDF dated 05/12/16 & follow up is going on. Now proposal sent to ICAR for comment through SDF. Topic: Catalytic pyrolysis of sugarcane based biomass to obtain stable fuel grade bio oil and fertilizer grade bio char. (Done By Pallavi Dhote Under guidance of Dr. A.N.Gokarn) 10) Distillery spent wash powder analysis done for % Organic matter,% Total carbon, Reducing sugar,potassium, Methylene blue value, ph, Solubility and settlement study and waiting for further work order from Ugar Sugar Works Ltd. (Under guidance of Dr.Mohan Dongre) (completed)

7 11) Use of Innovative Bio-inoculants for sustainable sugarcane farming system. (Under guidance of Dr.Snehal Joshi) (Ready for submission) 12) Pre proposal submitted on 12/09/17 to Rajiv Gandhi Science & Technology Commission Government of Maharashtra Research project titled Use of tuber crops for alcohol production Under guidance of Dr.Snehal Joshi & Mr.V.V.Jogdand 13) Research paper published in Jan 31 issue of Chemical Weekly on A simple solution for abatement of air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR) and New Delhi. ( Done by Pallavi Dhote under guidance of Dr.Gokarn ) 14) Valorization of harmful parthenium weed by its conversion into active charcoal (Done by Pallavi Dhote under guidance of Dr.Gokarn)Research paper submitted to International Journal of Enviromental Science and Technology. Current status: Under review We therefore request all Sugar factories process technologists and management to avail the facility of DSTA having most advanced equipments and authorisation to analyse the special analysis required. Also, urged all readers and council members to inform the concerned factories about the facility DSTA lab has got and encourage for obtaining special analysis form DSTA lab.
