The changing landscape of open access publishing And many more
Open Access in 2013 There are currently 8536 open access journals in the DOAJ Over 1000 open access journals are indexed by ISI Open access to research is now mandatory in over 150 institutions and by over 50 funders A recent study found that 8.5% of peer reviewed articles are now published in a fully open access form* *Study of open access Bo Christer Bjork, PLOS One
Papers published by major OA publishers
Benefits of Open Access Unrestricted access Breaks down barriers between disciplines Promotes public engagement with scientific and medical research Increased Citations Open access content has high visibility to search engines and encourages social sharing Creates an open global forum for scientific communication
Some truths about OA OA journal publishing is identical to subscription publishing only with a different business model Open access journals have some of the highest impact factors in their fields Open access journals have some of the most prestigious academics as Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Board Members Some institutions/funders mandate that all research they have funded should be published open access
A busy year for open access Academic Spring has kept Open Access in the news David Willetts (UK Science Minister), voiced strong support for OA, and announced involvement of Jimmy Wales in policy development The Finch report found open access would lead to efficiency benefits for researchers and produce economic growth July 2012, RCUK release policy on access to research outputs April 2013, RCUK block grants of 3bn 80bn across Europe by 2020
BioMed Central Launched 2000 Now publishes 250 open access titles Over 150,000 peer-reviewed OA articles published More than 10 million article downloads per month CC-BY Costs covered by 'article processing charge' (APC) Became part of Springer in 2008
