Quantum Dots, Responsible Development and Global Governance Seth Coe-Sullivan Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer May 7, 2010
QD Vision a green lighting solution provider Well positioned to deliver a game-changing opportunity Revolutionary technology Extensive patent portfolio Proven team, pioneering scientists Market & product focus Responsible development policy EH&S collaborations with Universities and Government Strong environmental benefits 2
Quantum Light TM Optics: Color and Efficiency Together Quantum Dots break tradeoff paradigm 3
Illuminated by Incandescent Bulb Cool White LED The Economist, March 7, 2010 Warm White LED/QD Optic 4 LED/QD Optic Lamp that integrates quantum dot technology Combines warm, rich color of QD emission with LED Efficiency, providing 2700K, 90+ CRI at 60 Lumens Per Watt
Quantum Dot Semiconductor Nanocrystals Precisely engineered for optimal performance & cost, light emission and particle processing. Emission Spectra Emission Yellow Semiconductor Nanocrystal 2-12 nm Core Color is controlled by size as well as composition Shell Power efficiency & stability Caps Process economics & design flexibility Normalized Intensity Wavelength (nm) Quantum dot < 50nm Quantum dot -- Narrow Phosphor Phosphor -- > 100nm Broad 5
Great global challenge... & opportunity 22% world electricity spent on lighting Conversion to efficient lighting underway Fluorescent & LEDs offer huge savings with power efficiency gains But, hindered by poor color, mercury Governments still forcing conversion QD Vision s Quantum Light optics eliminate the tradeoff Great color with step changes in power & cost savings 6
Quantum Light TM Optics Thin film of quantum dot ink is coated on the diffusive cover plate of an LED lamp Quantum Light optic Quantum dots absorb blue light from the LED and convert it efficiently to red light Together they create a pleasing incandescent quality light much more efficiently than conventional phosphor-based solutions Nexxus PAR 30 LED Array 7
Breakthrough with Quantum Light optic High color quality & high efficacy together! 1 st product in PAR 30 lamps for downlights Nexxus Lighting integrates optic into its LED Array Replacement Lamps Quantum Light optic transforms color of cool white lamp White: Color: Efficacy: 2700K (warm) 90+ CRI 60+ Im/W While maintaining high power efficiency Achieves 50% higher efficiency than next closest product Dramatic energy savings for consumers Quantum Light optic Nexxus PAR 30 LED Array 8
Environmental Net Benefits LED w/ Quantum Light TM increased environmental benefits Reduced cost of light to our customers Reduced electricity consumption (by 80%!) to their customers ~25 mg reduction per bulb due to Hg-free product Reduced energy consumption leads to lower CO 2 emissions Less manufacturing waste due to longer life Largest benefit is that consumers will WANT this product Market uptake is ultimate driver of environmental benefit Legislation is a poor substitute for a better product 9
Responsible Development Extends to ALL Aspects of Product Design 1. Quantum Dot Design Pband Cd-free R&D focus Worker Safety 2. Quantum Light TM Optic Product Realization of Energy and Emission Reductions Consumer /Product Safety Responsible Product Design Environmental Safety 3. Process & Manufacturing Operating Procedures NIOSH Studies 4. Life Cycle Risk Analysis Disposal Study Form Factor Choice 10
Health and Safety Considerations Understanding of the health and safety impact of quantum dot materials is in the early stages: Limited number of literature reports on biological QDs and their cytotoxicity and pharmacokinetics Very limited literature on our types of QD materials QD Vision is playing a leading role in advancing this understanding, which requires: Open & facile collaborations (next chart) Open communication between industry, researchers, and government (e.g. today) Appropriate levels of funding Confidential information protection 11
Responsible Development QD Vision has proactively established EH&S community collaborations US NIOSH Chuck Geraci Established QD R&D occupational health and safety best practices Presented in US and Taiwan University of Massachusetts Prof. Michael Ellenbecker Product safety feedback studies State of the art nanoparticle detection and analysis Conservation Law Fund Ventures Jo Anne Shatkin, Ph.D. Life cycle risk assessment the most comprehensive LCRA ever performed for a nano-material presented at Society for Risk Analysis Annual Meeting, 12/7/09 Brown University Profs. Robert Hurt and Agnes Kane EPA STAR Grant, end-of-life fate studies Below detectable range for EPA Method 1311/6010B/3010A OECD Nano- Working Group Participation Goal is to launch product with environmental benefit, by bringing EH&S information into the development process early. 12
Regulatory Compliance European Union developed RoHS ( Regulation on Hazardous Substances ) RoHS compliance for devices containing Cd-based QD materials will need to be determined on a case-by-case basis US EPA TSCA ( Toxic Substances Control Act ) QDV first to file for TSCA approval of a quantum dot QD Vision s first product material is TSCA approved, uniquely for QDs worldwide LoREx exemption applied for and received P2 Recognition (Pollution Preventing) material Working directly with those drafting policy around QDs within TSCA Although Cd-based materials may be acceptable in many applications, QD Vision is committing significant resources to the development of Cd-free compositions Appropriate strategy given global regulatory trends 13
(Small) Business Perspective on Global Regulatory Picture Good regulation is better than no regulation! Goal should be keeping public safe while providing hospitable and predictable business environment to develop and manufacture novel nanomaterials products (jobs, jobs, jobs ) Consistent, well-defined, early regulation may not be a bad thing, but we need the scientific basis to get it right Public-Private-Partnership (such as Tuesday s US EPA & National Academy of Science Research Strategies Meeting) needed to establish the basis, quickly, to regulate intelligently 14
