Advanced Materials and Nanotechnologies for Energy Cluster Workshop Introduction Iain Weir Cluster Secretariat
Agenda Introduction to the Cluster I. Weir, Secretariat Materials for Energy F. Stassin, EMIRI Key Challenges in the PV Sector Key Challenges in Thermoelectrics Key Challenges in Energy Storage S Perraud, EU PV Clusters J. Koenig, Nano4TE F. Stassin, EMIRI Discussion - Opportunities for Cluster Development - Identify and prioritise common issues - Define the role of the cross-cutting cluster Actions for Cluster Development Closing Remarks
Clusters A networking mechanism to Provide leadership and speak with a common voice. Review current activities for completeness and identify gaps Be an established point of reference / point of contact Support policy making An effective model for communication
Clusters Catalysis Characterisation Sensors Creative industries Energy technologies Batteries Nano for PV Nano for thermoelectrics Engineering and upscaling Joining dissimilar materials Materials modelling Modelling (multiscale) Nanomedicine Nanosafety Nano4water Raw materials
Generic Thermoelectrics Solar Fuel Cells Hydrogen Biofuels Gas Turbines Oil & Gas Electrical Power Wind Wave Coal Nuclear Energy Harvesting Modelling Energy Storage Energy Efficient Materials Energy Efficient Systemss Other Scope of the Cluster Advanced materials and nanotechnology projects Energy generation Energy storage Energy efficiency Supported by the Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials, Biotechnology and Advanced Manufacturing and Processing (NMBP) Programme (Industrial Technologies) Projects active in late 2015 / projects
Rationale for the Cluster Various Commission Programmes have made a large investment in RD&I in advanced materials and nanotechnology for energy applications Linked to the SET Plan But what are the next priorities: Are there common challenges in advanced materials and nanotechnologies in different application areas? Are these in R&D, upscaling and/or commercialisation? Are there transferable lessons between projects? What are the priorities for innovation in Europe?
Role of the Cluster To complement other clusters and their activities Build, where practical, on the work of existing clusters Compare and assess the challenges, issues and opportunities in the different technology/application areas Identify common challenges and topics for future Formulate recommendations for policy Materials and Nanotechnologies for Energy Applications Cluster NMBP Programme European Commission EU PV Clusters Specific Issues Thermoelectric Cluster Common Issues Industy, Research and Academia Battery Cluster Etc.
Cluster Short Term Objectives Identify common priorities and challenges for industry in Europe Assess options to support common innovation and exploitation challenges Identify methods to strengthen collaboration across different application areas Formulate recommendations for new RD&I and exploitation policies Investigate role and value of the overarching cluster Deliverables A cluster development plan A roadmap/position paper on priorities
Cluster - Longer Term Objectives Build on the initial activities Define how this cluster activity can be continued Define how it collaborates with related clusters Establish how it interacts with the European Commission
Initial Views Stakeholder survey Over 35 responses Key points Common challenges Priority areas for RD&I Focus for action development or scale up? Exploitation Potential funding mechanisms Role of the cluster
Common Challenges Materials Improved understanding of materials Enhanced material performance Handling of nanoparticles Simulation / modelling link to EU modelling cluster Devices Integration of active materials in devices Optimised device design Device encapsulation Capability to produce stable, reliable materials and devices (link with EMCC) Upscaling New (safe, reliable) manufacturing methods Scaleable processes / production at a large scale (link with the EPPN) Industry Weak European value chain Infrastructure Metrology and standardisation (link with EMCC)
Priority Areas Materials Improved understanding of materials Enhanced material performance Handling of nanoparticles Metrology and standardisation Simulation / modelling link to EU modelling cluster Devices Integration of active materials in devices Optimised device design Device encapsulation Capability to produce stable, reliable materials and devices Upscaling New (safe, reliable) manufacturing methods Scaleable processes / production at a large scale Industry Weak European value chain Infrastructure A balanced approach that addresses research, innovation and industrial development
Exploitation Challenges Moving from research to market Supporting TRL 5/6 to TRL 9 activities High cost High risk for funders Achieving market acceptance of new technologies Regulation and standardisation Expertise Dependence on industrial partners Need for additional expertise? Finance High cost of materials and equipment Access to first stage funding The cost of large scale fabrication
Potential Funding Mechanisms Increase support of near market projects More calls for pilot line projects Supporting higher TRL (close to market) developments Follow-up grants for successful projects Targeted funding for high potential technologies Funding for focused industry-academic collaboration Support for non-technical projects Training in new exploitation models Financial support for clustering and networking activities Need for stable frameworks Based on clearly defined and agreed roadmaps
Roles for the Cluster Foresighting Develop roadmaps and strategic research agendas for key applications Encourage /initiate a cohesive European way forward Define priorities (target specific opportunities) Networking Build value chain linkages Strengthen industry academic links Enhance inter-project collaboration Industrial development Target and develop attractive market opportunities Develop the rationale for new production investment in Europe Develop market / end user linkages Policy Influence to ensure supportive European policy
Key Questions What are the key roles for the overarching cluster? What are the common issues? What are the priorities? How do we take the cluster forward? How does it interact with other clusters / initiatives at European level?
