Scope Engineering of products Upscaling of processes and production. Determine how to add value to existing activities in order to bridge the gap to commercialisation. Identify obstacles, requirements and potential actions. Support establishing a community of stakeholders Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 2
Building the bridge Product Vision Obstacles Tools needed Actions Benefits Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 3
Electronics Health Energy Catalysis Environment Construction Transport Adding value to existing activities MARKET Engineering & Upscaling Safety Characterisation Modelling Standards Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 4
Topics Characterisation Modelling Testing facilities Design Skills Standards Pilot Lines LCA Finance Supply chain Manufacturing facilities Market intelligence 5
What did we get from the survey? Projects pursue more than one product 62/80 specify two products 51/80 specify three products TRL levels Average 6 Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 6
Risk ranking 50% 45% 40% 35% 30% 25% 20% 15% 10% 5% 0% Chart shows percentage of projects that ranked item as high risk factor. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 7
Key gaps to highest TRL Product approval by regulatory and/or relevant international bodies. Improved material/product robustness and reliability Securing an industrial integrator who adapts the new technologies to industrial scale. Availability of large scale testing, pilot and manufacturing facilities. Continuation of funding. Funding required: median about 2m Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 8
Established company involvement Investment by established companies in related industries is required. Typically, the product will need to be further developed by a company. Commercial development of real products in the (micro/nano electronics) field can only be carried out by large commercial companies with access to huge amounts of funding. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 9
Kick-off meeting key messages Projects lack clear understanding of potential markets. Hard to find industrial partners to demonstrate high-volume feasibility and viability. Regulations: Fear of additional burden by future nanomaterials related regulations. Testing and pilot facilities: Inadequate capacity & capability for functional conditions testing. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 10
Topics covered Facilities for Pilots and Production Funding, Finance Characterisation and Testing. Modelling and LCA Standards, Certification, Regulatory Product Management IP Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 11
Pilot lines and manufacturing facilities Low availability of facilities currently increases failure risk. Rapid Material Development.- Ability to fast manufacture and characterise materials. (prior to upscale: micro-upscale) Invest in pilot lines which can deal with diverse materials, e.g. heterogeneous integration of electronics-photonics-mems-sensors. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 12
Finance Risk averse/short time horizon industry in Europe. TRL too low for Investors. Need guidelines on preferential conditions for early investors. Review and select the most promising completed projects and reformulate them for upscaling, funded jointly with industry/investors. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 13
Characterisation and Testing Need for more and better coordinated, easier access characterisation and testing facilities More in-line/in-site Realistic conditions, beyond current standards. Functional testing. Standard characterisation methods do not properly present the full potential of new materials/new products. Parallel development of products/processes and corresponding characterisation/testing technology/methods. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 14
Simulation based engineering Despite major advances in materials modelling, industry is still unwilling to base investment decision on it. More validation needed. Open source/open data/open access Modelling platform needed that allows easy and first assessment of the scale-up potential of newly developed processes. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 15
LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) Coordinate LCA efforts between projects. Open-source LCA from projects in order to avoid repetition. Collect all data from industry in order to conduct complete LCA. Include at an early TRL stage. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 16
Standards and Regulations Unified European regulations and standards beyond Europe required. Slow response/long lead times for new standards. Different time scale to projects Uncertainties regarding regulatory development of existing legislation like REACH = break to innovation. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 17
Product Management Researchers have a lack of knowledge and experience in this field. Industrial requirements need to be more clearly defined at the start of the project. End user needs to be actively involved in project (currently wait and see). Manage complex industrial criteria more efficiently: develop new materials and products within these constraints from the start! Projects tend to be averse to change in response to industry and market changes: allow more flexibility to respond. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 18
IP Financial support to maintain and develop the generated IP. SMEs do not have capacities for IP management IP and business departments of companies should get a more defined role and be paid for their contribution. Independent partners (for IP, market potential screening etc.) approved by EC should be organised as support for EUprojects. Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 19
Suggested policies, examples Direct co-finance pilot production activities Develop crucial meta market-information Enhance the skills/capacities of SMEs Support brokerage, bring together industry and research Engineering & Upscaling Cluster 20
