3 Biopolymers Alone do Not Meet Application s Requirements Bioplastics like PLA are hardly processable on conventional machinery. Many bioplastics like PLA have a low H 2 O and CO 2 barrier. For film applications e.g. PLA alone is often too stiff and too brittle. High price must be compensated by benefits. 3

26 Bioplastics in Mechanical Recycling Streams Biodegradable Polymers (fossil or renewable carbon origin) Bio-based Polymers (only renewable carbon origin) Biodegradable: PLA, PHA, Starch, Lignin, Cellulose-Derivatives,... Renewable: PLA, PHA, Starch, Lignin, Cellulose-Derivatives,... also PBAT, PBS,... also Bio-PE, Bio-PA, Bio-PUR, Bio-PET ( plant bottle) Compostable plastics, certified according to EN 13432, are specifically designed for organic recycling (industrial composting). For this purpose, in Europe they are clearly marked with logos such as the Seedling. As the market share increases, it will become economically viable to actively sort compostable plastics out and create new and valuable markets for the waste management industry. Bio-based, non compostable plastics (e.g. Bio-PE) are chemically identical to their conventional counterparts and are just as easily managed in the existing plastics recycling streams. In a Polyethylene waste stream, any contamination (either compostable or conventional PS, PP, PET) should not exceed a specific percentage and must be treated very similar. 34
