INTRODUCTION: Background 2 ANTARES (AeroNauTicAl REsources Satellite based) is the Phase B Study of the ESA Iris Program for designing a new ATM - Dedicated Satellite Communication System for SESAR. It will be used for full 4D trajectory management. It consists of a new Communication Standard and associated Satellite System Infrastructures, namely: Space Segment, Ground Segment and User Terminals.
ANTARES PHASE B MAIN OBJECTIVES Specification and preliminary design of the overall Satellite Communication System and all its elements including Space and Ground Segment. 3 Specification, design, development and testing of a new Communication Standard for satellite-based Air Traffic Management communications up to the level required for international standardisation. Specification, design and development of a Verification Test Bed (CS VTB) in order to validate the end-to-end performance of the new communication standard, on the basis of the SESAR requirements. Design and Development of a prototype of a low-cost airborne user terminal.
OVERALL INDUSTRIAL CONSORTIUM: Core Team 4 The Industrial Consortium is leaded by THALES ALENIA SPACE (Italy) as Prime Contractor being also in charge of the Overall System (WP1) and Space Segment (WP4), with a Core Team taking benefit from the strength of key industrial partners, namely: INDRA ESPACIO: Communication Standard THALES AVIONICS LTD: User Terminal HONEYWELL: User Terminal THALES ALENIA SPACE, FRANCE: Ground Segment
OVERALL INDUSTRIAL CONSORTIUM Some additional eighteen Subcontractors are involved in specific tasks, providing relevant accountable expertise for the concerned areas of involvement, namely: 5 AETHIS, AIRTEL, ANTWERP SPACE, CAPGEMINI NORWAY, DLR, EVOLVING SYSTEMS, FREQUENTIS, GMV, IGUASSU SOFTWARE, IZT, JAST, NEXT, SINTEF, SPACEBEL, SPENG, UNIV SALBURG, WISER Industrial Consortium includes competencies to successfully fulfilling targeted B2 objectives and is fully committed to drive the programme to success.

ANTARES PROGRESS OVERVIEW The Phase B1 has been completed and closed. 8 The Phase B2 started in June 2012 and the technical work is currently on going with the industrial consortium fully committed to the timely achievement of concerned tasks. ANTARES will delivery: Detail Design Definition of the Operational System A Communication Standard verified on the Verification Test Bed Prototype of the UT
ANTARES KEY CONSIDERATIONS AND MAJOR BENEFITS 9 The ANTARES project will set the basis for providing a Satellite Communication System tailored to the requirements of SESAR JU and offering: ATM - dedicated Satellite Communication System Purposely designed for safety-of-life communication services (ATS/AOC+ADS-C+voice) so as to guarantee the high reliability and availability performances required as well as to minimise the user terminals cost and the L-band frequency spectrum usage. The overall system is dimensioned for low cost avionics by appropriately optimizing system, segment and Communication Standard features. A dedicated satellite communication system guarantees the priority to safety services.
ANTARES KEY CONSIDERATIONS AND MAJOR BENEFITS 10 Safety-of-life applications rigorously assured The safety-of-life applications are supported by respecting the stringent availability, continuity, integrity and latency requirements defined in the ESA SRD and in COCR documents by means of a specific system design. The design is based on: Extensive and comprehensive RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) analyses at system and segments levels, A dedicated satellite constellation for the requested services availability An ad-hoc Communication Standard designed in order to comply with the COCR performance requirements
ANTARES KEY CONSIDERATIONS AND MAJOR BENEFITS Low cost User Terminal A satellite communication system designed to minimise the complexity as well as the production, installation and maintenance costs of the airborne User Terminal adopting a low cost aeronautical omni-directional like antenna suitable for all the aircraft categories. 11 Open Communication Standard fully and efficiently devoted to the avionics needs Designed to achieve the performances required for the Single European Sky new services in continental and oceanic airspace for all types of aircrafts (including rotary-wing) and, at the same time, minimizing the L-band frequency spectrum usage. The Communication Standard is designed so as to be suitable in any type of satellite system constellations (GEO, HEO, MEO etc.) and to operate in very large networks with high number of aircrafts. The Communication Standard specifications will be openly available to any interested party worldwide.
ANTARES KEY CONSIDERATIONS AND MAJOR BENEFITS Optimized system throughput An efficient use of communication resource is obtained by means of adaptive waveforms, dynamic resources assignment etc. 12 System compatibility to both centralized and de-centralized ground segment architectures, to be selected depending on service providers needs and future evolution of the ATM service scenario System designed to have high ATM traffic load flexibly The ANTARES system is able to support and accommodate variable traffic distribution over service area and to follow aircraft and data traffic growth over time. This is obtained by implementing system and satellite payload solutions to support flexible and reconfigurable frequency plan, power to beams allocation flexibility and by means of a suitable satellite constellation deployment strategy based on incremental traffic needs reducing commercial risks.
13 CONCLUDING REMARKS
ANTARES ACTIVITIES DURING Consolidation of the CS Technical Specifications by March- April System and Segments PDRs by 3 rd quarter Development the VTB Prototypes and Emulators by 4 th quarter VTB Assembly, Integration and Test Campaign thus providing a proper test environment for the CS. The VTB will be ready for use in January 2014.
ANTARES ACTIVITIES DURING The Test Bed will evaluate CS end to end performances in a real-time environment, including all the layers of the protocol stack suitably allocated to physical and logical domains. 15 The Verification Test Campaign will finally demonstrate the adequacy and suitability of the CS for the intended applications. By April 2014 ANTARES will provide a fully verified and tested Open Standard (Test Report).
