3 Overview In recent years, the construction industry and the profession of architecture have seen major changes in the methods of doing their work. The digital era has ushered in CAD in lieu of manual production of drawings. From that beginning, 3D modeling of buildings and the use of computers to analyze designs has become commonplace. BIM has become the buzzword of the industry. However, despite the use of computers to do everything else, computers are not being used to their maximum advantage in project administration. 4 Overview The following examples point out this fact: Hard copy drawings are being used to communicate to the entire project team. Submittals are almost universally hard copy, using multiple copies to mark-up and distribute. RFI s, change orders, proposal requests and other documents are sent as hard copies by fax or courier. Close-out documents are hard copy and submitted in multiple banker boxes to be stored in warehouses and never opened again. Each project team member retains project information in servers accessible only by their own Overview employees without sharing information with other members in digital i format. 4

5 Overview The results of these inefficient processes are: Excessive time lost in transmitting and receiving documents. Excessive costs of printing. 41 Case Study For the past four years, a school system in Florida has employed Digital Project Administration. i ti They have tested t and implemented both the technology and the adaptation to existing gprocedures. A major result is that the projects have a usable archive. They started in 2006 with one Elementary school project and are currently employing Digital Project Administration on most of their projects. They have utilized it on nearly $300 million worth of construction. Case Study 41

42 Case Study Parameters Based on the projects undertaken by that school district the following are the results of utilizing a Digital Project Administration system. The project that was studied is a typical High School project for that district. The construction cost for this project was approximately $45 million and required 18 months for construction.
