A connected vehicle integrated with smart mobility will allow the customer to not only combine their digital lifestyle with the automobile but create a cross-industry connection as well. The ability for automotive and technology companies to benefit from these connections depends on four smart mobility competencies. First, look for adjoining areas that are closely tied to the automobile and mobility. Second, leverage technology with other business partners that have a clearly defined value proposition. Third, allow for continued focus on product development but allow for new input on product and service innovations through digital assets. Finally, create an environment of collaboration, cocreation, and investment activities where new partnerships can be leveraged between automotive and technology industries. These solutions address urban challenges such as safety and security, traffic congestion, aging urban infrastructures and collaboration between city operations. However as shown in the Hype Cycle the technology platforms in smart city solutions are advancing into commercial applications faster than business models and service models can support. Smart City technology solutions should be embedded into the use cases for implementing improvements to aging infrastructure assets. The priority matrix takes those assets a step further and demonstrates those technologies that will have a high impact on smart cities along with the length of mainstream adoption.
