ABSTRACT (maximum 200 words) The Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) and the Fleet Industrial Supply Center (FISC) have recently commissioned a study on base level computing (BLC). The purpose of which was to determine how to focus their BLC resources. This was in response to recent mission changes for both NAVSUP and the FISC. Although this study addressed in some detail the technological structure ofthe client-server systems that NAVSUP and the FISC intend to establish, it did not address the staffing ofthe lowest level base resources used by the FISC. The intent ofthe FISC is to establish a client-server LAN operation in support of BLC. The method used to determine the staffing needs ofa typical operation to support BLC was to survey operations already established at four example sites. Three ofthese sites are government operations, one ofwhich is an existing FISC. This FISC is currently tranisitioning to the new missions ofinventory management and consumable supply support. Results ofthe survey ofthese four LAN operations, the two most important factors in determining the ratio of support personnel to end users is the standardization of software and hardware ofthe system, and the degree that the system is open or closed. Closed and standard systems require much less support than open systems. 14. SUBJECT TERMS Client-Server, LAN, Support Staff, FISC, NAVSUP, United 15. NUMBER OF States Navy PAGES PRICE CODE 17.
