2 Defining Adaptive Computing Adaptive Adaptive means having the ability or tendency to adapt to different situations; a formal word Adaptive Computing New approach to design hardware, software and system services following the business-driven need to permanent change and adaptability Adaptive Computing Infrastructure A computing infrastructure is called adaptive, if it allows the dynamic assignment of hardware resources to serve specific application services. 3 Adaptive Computing and SAP Netweaver SAP NetWeaver provides ADAPTIVE COMPUTING capabilities, i.e. SAP NetWeaver provides a way to virtualize application services, and provides a single central point of control for flexible compute resource assignment for existing code to run on dedicated/changing hardware. 7 Adaptive Computing: Characteristics I Application Services Definition: SAP instances managed and assigned to a dedicated computing resource ( e.g. Databases, Application server ) Virtualization of application services Application relevant data must be stored on a storage system within a network Installation-free provisioning (e.g. application server ) Centralized shared data model required on level file access NFS or equivalent For individual application services (single node, e.g. DB-Files) a point-to-point connection is possible (e.g. FC, SAN, equivalent), integration into Adaptive Computing Concept is required and must be described SAP AG 2003, Adaptive Computing at DaimlerChrysler / 7

13 Current Status of Adaptive Computing SAPPHIRE 03 Orlando (June 2003) Successful demonstration of proof-of-concept with Fujitsu Siemens Computers on FlexFrame for mysap Business Suite Fujitsu Siemens Computers with its existing infrastructure solution FlexFrame for mysap Business Suite is an early adaptor of the Adaptive Computing concept from SAP and committed to support this concept further. SAP is currently productizing the Adaptive Computing Concept in order to make it available as part of SAP NetWeaver.
