1 Job Title: Department: Business Intelligence (BI) Engineer IT Summary The Business Intelligence (BI) Engineer is responsible developing and supporting enterprise data management applications and projects. This role is to strategically design and implement enterprise business intelligence solutions across the organization using proven BI framework architecture, modeling, engineering techniques and sound information architecture principles. Prospective candidates must have extensive experience in developing solutions for Enterprise Data enablement and management systems. They must understand system development lifecycle for Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Deep knowledge of enterprise data warehouse, operational data store, data marts is required. They will work within our Data Management organization on enterprise data integration initiatives and support. The successful candidates will be highly motivated professionals with experience building scalable enterprise applications. WCIRB- California is looking for highly customer-focused team players with the ability to deliver and perform under pressure. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Business Intelligence (BI) Architecture Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals for Business Intelligence architecture and development in conjunction with end users (member customers), business partners and other stakeholders. Conduct research and make recommendations on BI products, features & services, and standards in support of development efforts. Recommend innovative and cost-effective solutions required to meet the needs of the WCIRB enterprise. Assist Data Systems Analysts to gather, analyze and document business and data requirements using EDM recommended techniques. Present working prototypes and reviews findings with other project team members. Help in securing appropriate signoffs. Perform as-is and to-be analysis of business intelligence processes and workflows. Propose ideas for reports, dashboards, data analysis and ways to represent data in the most efficient and effective ways. Metadata Modeling Provide other report authors (fellow BI engineers and Business users) a Framework for effective, efficient and accurate reporting. Enhance the user experience by providing rich metadata by utilizing the latest features of Cognos. Respond to diverse requirements and the dynamic nature of WCIRB users and products. Incorporate EDM enforced industry standard best practices in each and every model/package. Standardize the security implementation in the Framework with right filters and access restriction. Employ advanced parameterization techniques (Eg. Identify environment and model session parameters) in the Framework manager. Report Development Ensure high user adoption by creating a well-designed, easy to use and highly efficiently performing (speed and accuracy) reports. Gather, define and document detailed business 1

2 report design and security requirements. Define and adhere to industry best practices in terms of development techniques and naming conventions. Improve the EDM BI report Development process by innovating new ways to present the data in a format that makes exploration process easier for the customers. Advocate and demonstrate the usage of Active Reports to replace HTML code. Create elaborative unit test plan different test cases. Executes each unit test case and ensures that quality meets design specifications prior to quality assurance/integration testing. Consistently delivery exceptional quality of work (The number of defects have to less than the EDM enforced threshold). Assist the Data Systems Analysts and business partners during the QA and UAT phases respectively. Address the defects with in the agreed timeframe and make sure not to break any other functionality prior moving to the QA/business user validation. Proactively participate in the analysis, development, and implementation of new projects and enhancements. Cognos Administration Monitor Production Cognos system metrics. Manage dispatchers and services. Tune server performance. Audit Cognos BI. Identify issues while troubleshooting the environment. Formulate Cognos BI backup strategy. Manage run activities. Manage schedules (Both predefined and initiated by supporting systems like InfoSphere). Manage user profiles. Define industry standard best practice around member access permissions. Responsible for the license compliance of the instances (internal facing and external facing) in all the domains (DEV, TEST, STG and Production) Responsible for Cognos Performance planning and installation approaches and configurations. Identify security policies. Responsible for planning and application of the latest fix packs in the Cognos environment. Plan and implement periodic upgrades (Major releases) of Cognos environment. Work closely with the EDM Director to secure the necessary approvals from the Infrastructure Director and CIO. Leadership (This applies only to Lead Level) Responsible for defining the critical success factors for the daily operations of the BI group. Define and maintain the standard templates, development standards and operating procedures pertaining to the EDM BI group. Lead or mentor fellow BI engineers. Identify the required training schedule for the continuous improvement of the skillset with in the BI group. Coordinate with the EDM Director to get the required approvals for the BI training plan. Advocate the EDM knowledge areas and their practical application to maximize the return on investment for the business partners. Coordinate EDM projects, working with assigned project team and identified resources. Devise and maintain the succession plan strategy. Review the strategy with the EDM Director annually or bi-annually. Production Support and Administration 2

3 Work with DBAs and/or Data Integration developers to provide business analysis/impact on troubleshooting of data-related project or production issues, tests and ensures approved solution is deployed in accordance with existing release management process. Coordinate production support items with HelpDesk Support team. Conducts BI training and provides guidance and direction to new junior EDM/business partner team member as required. Enforce and adhere to organizational processes and standards. Create and deliver materials necessary to train other IT staff, help desk resources and application users that will use and support the application. Complete administration tasks such as Halogen, Dovico, ADP on time with excellent quality. General Requirements: Bachelor s Degree in Computer Science, related field or equivalent experience (including completed courses in relevant areas such as computer science, computer languages, etc.) Proficiency on Cognos Analytics platform, architecture, framework modeling, report development, and administration. Cognos cube and transformer product knowledge. Dynamic cube knowledge is strong plus. Understanding of Microsoft technologies (SSAS, SSRS, DTS, SSIS,.NET). Database tuning and query performance troubleshooting skills. Strong Data Modeling Skills, SQL, relational, dimensional and multi-dimensional database designs. Ability to design and implement enterprise data integration solutions. Strong knowledge of data, master data and metadata related standards, processes and technology. Ability to work with business partners to gather BI requirements. Translation of business questions and requirements into reports, views, and BI query objects. Exceptional problem solving, metadata and debugging skills. Proven analytical and organizational skills. Strong initiative in recognizing and acting on process/solution improvement opportunities. Keep abreast of Advanced Analytics technologies like Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated collaborative skills and ability to work well within a team Ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting Experience with the Workers Comp Insurance and Healthcare Provider industries is a plus 3

4 4+ years of Professional IT experience is required. 3+ years of intensive experience in Analysis, Design, Implementation and Support of complex BI Solutions. 3+ years of experience with IBM Cognos Analytics. 3+ years previous experience in data warehouse tools, technologies, principles, data modeling, and best practices. 3+ years of experience in BI system installation, configuration and administration. Expert level of understanding of relational database, dimensional database concepts, BI models, database architecture and design. Must be highly motivated, a quick learner, to work independently or on a team and drive results/solutions with minimal supervision. Excellent oral, written and presentation skills. Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. Excellent collaborative skills and ability to work well within and outside the team. Self-motivated with critical attention to detail, deadlines and reporting. Senior 7+ years of Professional IT experience is required. 5+ years of intensive experience in Analysis, Design, Implementation and Support of complex BI Solutions. 5+ years of hands on experience with the following technologies RDBMS (MS SQL Server, DB2) Business Intelligence and Analytics (IBM Cognos) 5+ years of experience in BI system installation, configuration and administration. 5+ years of experience in BI system Deployment management and Operational support. Expert level of understanding of relational database, dimensional database concepts, BI models, database architecture and design. Direct, organize, and lead projects in the implementation and use of BI software tools and systems. In-depth understanding of parallel processing, partitioning, sub-partitioning, partition Exchange, and advanced performance tuning. Understanding of requirements management and test plans. Understanding of project methodologies. Strong troubleshooting skills. Must be highly motivated, a quick learner, to work independently or on a team and drive results/solutions with minimal supervision. Develop / report project estimates, project plans and impact analysis as necessary. Excellent oral, written and presentation skills. Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. Excellent collaborative skills and ability to work well within and outside the team. 5 8+ years of intensive experience in Analysis, Design, Implementation and Support of Information management projects. 8+ years of combined experience in various EDM core competencies (Data Governance, Data Standards, Master Data Management, Metadata Management, Data Security and Retention, Data Architecture, Data Quality, Data Access and Visualization Business Intelligence, Data Consolidation and Integration Enterprise Data Warehouse) 8+ combined experience in various technologies such as MS SQL Server, DB2, Oracle, Cognos, Business Objects and/or other products within Enterprise Data Management discipline 4+ years of team leadership experience Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals for BI development in conjunction with end users, managers, clients, and other stakeholders. Conduct research and make recommendations on BI products, services, and standards in support of development efforts. Must stay abreast of the latest technology development and architectural principles related to BI and advanced data analytics; Ensure that WCIRB s BI technology environment is up to date with versions and patches; recommend innovative and cost-effective solutions required to meet the needs of the enterprise. Strong knowledge and understanding of OLTP and OLAP implementation processes from business requirements gathering and analysis through modeling, physical database design, data visualization and data access. Strong understanding of EDM core disciplines. Passionate about solving business challenges; innovative, creative and an outside-the-box mindset.
