3 1.0 Introduction 1.1 We were instructed by Richard Hillam Polarwall to carry out measurements of the sound insulation of the party wall within the new build attached houses, situated at Easterton of Duntelchaig, Farr, Inverness, IV2 6AW. 1.2 The measurements were carried out on, by Dr. Sean Smith, B.Sc (Hons), Ph.D, M.I.O.A. 2.0 Wall specification 2.1 The sound insulation was measured between the adjacent first floor bedrooms of Plot 1 and The construction details were reported as follows: Single sheet of 12.5 mm plasterboard directly fixed onto a Polarwall insulating concrete formwork. 200 mm in-situ concrete core with 50 mm polystyrene insulation on each side. 3.0 Equipment used 3.1 The equipment used conformed to the requirements of Parts 4 (airborne) of BS EN ISO 140, Measurement of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements. 4 3.2 The following items of equipment were used during the measurement:- Equipment Brüel & Kjær Modular Precision Sound Level Meter Type 2260 running Building Acoustics Module Type BZ7204 Serial No Brüel & Kjær Prepolarised Condenser Microphone Cartridge Type Brüel & Kjær Sound Level Calibrator Type Brüel & Kjær Sound Source Type Measurement procedure 4.1 The measurement procedure conformed to the requirements of the Building Standards (Scotland) Regulations The sound level meter was calibrated before and after the measurements. A 0.1 db deviation from the calibration level of 94 db re 2 x 10-5 Pa at 1000 Hz was recorded. Robin Mackenzie Partnership Page 3

5 5.0 Results 5.1 The full airborne sound insulation results of the separating wall construction are given in Figure 1. The single figure sound insulation ratings calculated in accordance with BS EN ISO 717: 1997 are shown in Table 1 relative to the requirements of Section 5 of the Building Standards (Scotland) Regulations. Table 2 shows the sound insulation performance of the party wall relative to Part E of the building regulation England and Wales. Table 1. 6 5.3 The result given in Table 2 indicates that the sound insulation of the tested wall construction has complied with the Part E requirements and Approved Document E 2003 for England and Wales.
