6 SHEETROCK» LIGHTWEIGHT SETTING-TYPE JOINT COMPOUND EASY SAND EASY SAND For one-day drywall finishing For interior plasterboard and gypsum fibre boards. Weighs 25% less than conventional setting-type compounds. Sanding ease similar to a ready-mixed, all-purpose joint compound. Unique humidity resistance. Exceptional bond with low shrinkage. Check-crack resistance in heavy fills. Choice of setting times. Description Advantages Limitations SHEETROCK Brand Lightweight Setting-Type Joint Compounds (EASY SAND ) are chemically setting compounds for plasterboard interiors that permit same-day joint finishing, and, usually, next-day decoration. Compounds are lightweight for easy handling and sand easily for fast, smooth finishing. They are ideal for heavy fills and are virtually unaffected by humidity. They provide low shrinkage and superior bond, which makes them excellent for laminating plasterboard to plasterboard, to sound-deadening boards, and to above-grade concrete surfaces. In addition, they can be used for filling, smoothing, and finishing interior concrete ceilings and above-grade concrete; and for finishing joints in gypsum fibre boards. To meet varying job requirements, a full line has been developed to provide a choice in setting times. The suffix number identifying each joint compound indicates an approximate setting time. For example, EASY SAND 90 sets in approximately minutes. Other setting times available are 20 (20-30 minutes); 45 (30-80 minutes); 210 ( minutes); and 300 ( minutes). For patching applications requiring very quick setting, SHEETROCK Brand Patching Compound EASY SAND 5, with a setting time of 8-12 minutes, is available. Lightweight formula. Weighs 25% less than conventional setting-type joint compounds. Handling and application is simpler, easier, and faster. Easy sanding. Unlike conventional setting-type joint compounds, these compounds sand easily similar to ready-mixed, all-purpose joint compounds. Joint finishing is faster, easier, smoother. Saves time and money. These compounds provide important labour and material cost reductions. One-day finishing with next-day decoration ensures rapid job completion and earlier occupancy. Choice of setting times aids work flow. Quickly mixed for immediate use. Easy to mix simply combine with water and stir. Compounds are applied after short soaking period and remixing. Resists shrinkage and edge-cracking. Compounds tolerate small amounts of excess water that would otherwise cause delayed shrinkage. Fill and finish coats can be applied when compound is hard but still damp with minimum danger of delayed shrinkage and cracking. Resists humidity changes. Setting rates are virtually unaffected by high humidity or changes in humidity. Application can be made in weather conditions that drying-type compounds would delay job completion. Multiple use. Compounds are also excellent for patching and smoothing interior plasterboard and concrete surfaces because they provide superior bond, low shrinkage, and fast setting-action. 1. Setting action cannot be delayed or prevented by dilution with water. 2. Not to be applied over moist surfaces or surfaces likely to become moist, or on below-grade surfaces or surfaces projecting outside building structure unless protected from direct exposure to moisture. 3. Before using over new interior concrete surfaces, allow concrete to age 60 days or more. Remove protrusions, ridges, form or parting oils, grease, and efflorescence. 4. Prior to using any epoxy coating over any surface treated with joint compound, consult the epoxy coating manufacturer and follow manufacturer s specific recommendations regarding the preparation or suitability of substrates for the epoxy coating. Many epoxy coatings exert significant shear stress on the substrate as the strong epoxy film shrinks while curing/drying. This stress can cause the bond of the joint compound to fail, resulting in delamination problems. 6 1 JUNE 2015 PLASTERBOARD FINISHING GUIDE

7 SHEETROCK» LIGHTWEIGHT SETTING-TYPE JOINT COMPOUND Directions Preparation In cold weather during plasterboard joint finishing, minimum surface, water, mix, and air temperature of 8 C must be ensured until joints are completely dry. Adequate ventilation shall be provided to carry off excess moisture. Plasterboard Joint Treatment Filling and Finishing over Interior Poured Concrete Ceilings Use with Water-Resistant Plasterboard Laminating and Back-blocking Decorating Position and apply plasterboard in accordance with manufacturer s recommendations. Mix EASY SAND Joint Compound according to directions on bag. Cover joint with a thin layer of compound and embed tape, leaving about 0.8 mm of compound under feathered edge and a thin layer over the tape. After compound has set, apply second coat, feathering out approximately 50 mm beyond first coat. After setting, apply third coat, feathering out 50 mm beyond second coat. After each coat is applied, smooth away any tool lap marks or other imperfections prior to hardening action. Finish fastener heads with three coats of joint compound; finish corner bead and inside corners as required with at least two coats, feathered and smoothed out onto panel faces. If sanding, use nothing coarser than 180-grit sandpaper, and avoid scuffing paper. Sheetrock Fibreglass joint tape may also be used for a two coat system. Grind high plane differences in concrete level with adjacent area; also remove any form oil, efflorescence, and greasy deposits. Prime exposed metal with a good rust-inhibitive primer. Fill offsets or voids with joint compound. Apply additional coats of joint compound as necessary, after each coat has set, but not necessarily dried. For a Level 5 finish spray a uniform coat of SHEETROCK Brand Tuff-Hide Primer-Surfacer per application requirements. In areas to be tiled, for tapered edge joints, embed SHEETROCK Brand Joint Tape with EASY SAND 45 or 90. When set, apply a fill coat. Take care not to crown the joint. Wipe excess joint compound from the panel surface before it hardens. For butt joints and interior angles, embed SHEETROCK Brand Joint Tape with EASY SAND 45 or 90. A fill coat is not necessary. Again, take care not to crown the joint. For fasteners, spot fastener heads at least once. When penetrations are made in the plasterboard fill and seal all openings around pipes, fittings, and fixtures with a thinned-down coat of tile adhesive. For best results, use Type I Ceramic Tile Adhesive that meets ANSI A136.1 both as a sealer and to set the tile. With a 25 mm brush, apply the thinned adhesive onto the raw plasterboard core at cutouts, and allow area to dry thoroughly prior to application of tile. Before the Easysand compound dries, wipe excess material from the surface of the plasterboard. For areas not to be tiled, embed tape in the conventional manner. Finish with at least two coats of a SHEETROCK Brand Joint Compound to provide joint finishing for painting and wallpapering. Apply EASY SAND Joint Compound in the prescribed manner to back of face panels to be laminated or backblocked. Laminate face panels to (base layer panels) or back-block panels using moderate pressure and temporary nailing or shoring to ensure adequate bond. Refer to plasterboard manufacturer s technical data for exact back-blocking details. For priming and decorating with paint, texture, or wallcovering, follow manufacturer s directions for materials used. All surfaces must be dry, dust-free, and not glossy. Walls to be covered with wallpaper or vinyl wallcovering should be sealed per manufacturer s recommendations. To improve concealment where walls and ceilings will be subjected to severe artificial or natural critical lighting, the plasterboard surface should be sprayed with Level 5 SHEETROCK Brand Tuff-Hide Primer-Surfacer before painting. This advanced joint compound weighs up to 35% less than conventional compounds, so handling, application and sanding are simple, easy and fast. Each job goes more quickly and cleans up faster with less nuisance from airborne sanding dust. Sheetrock lightweight all purpose joint compound with dust control requires only two coats over bead and fasteners. It bonds like a taping product for a tough, tight bond under most job conditions and combines all-purpose, single-package convenience with optimum taping and topping performance. Sheetrock lightweight all purpose joint compound with dust control is compatible with all other USG joint compounds, so it can be used just for the joint fi nishing coats that will be sanded. For example, use Sheetrock all purpose joint compound for the taping coat and Sheetrock lightweight all purpose joint compound with dust control for the fi nishing coats. Sheetrock lightweight all purpose joint compound with dust control creates less airborne dust when sanded to provide a cleaner job environment. It also offers all the benefi ts of a Sheetrock ready-mixed joint compound, with up to 35% less weight, less shrinkage and exceptional ease of sanding. This unique joint compound is formulated to provide low shrinkage and good crack resistance. It also features excellent adhesion and usually requires just two coats over metal, such as corner beads and fasteners saving time and money. 1. Before using any epoxy coating over a surface treated with joint compound, consult the epoxy coating manufacturer and follow manufacturer recommendations for preparation or suitability of substrates. Many epoxy coatings exert signifi cant shear stress on the substrate while curing/drying, which can cause the joint compound bond to fail, resulting in delamination problems. 2. Protect container from freezing, exposure to extreme heat and direct sunlight. Install Sheetrock brand gypsum panels following manufacturer recommendations. In cold weather and during gypsum panel joint fi nishing, temperatures within the building shall be maintained at a minimum of 55 F (13 C). Adequate ventilation shall be provided to carry off excess moisture. Mix Sheetrock lightweight all purpose joint compound with dust control lightly prior to application. May be used directly from container for covering fasteners and corner bead. For taping and fi nishing joints (especially when using mechanical tools), thinning by adding water may improve application and performance. Add water in half-pint increments to avoid overthinning. Remix lightly and test-apply after each water addition until desired consistency is reached. Cover joint with a thin layer of compound, and embed tape, leaving about 1/32" of compound under feathered edge; let dry and smooth lightly as required. Apply second coat, feathering approximately 2" beyond fi rst coat; let dry and smooth lightly as required. Apply third coat, feathering 2" beyond second coat; let dry and smooth lightly as required. Finish fastener heads, corner bead and inside corners with two coats of joint compound, feather out onto panel faces and fi nish to a smooth surface. Use 150-grit sandpaper or 220-grit abrasive mesh cloth, or fi ner. General-purpose sandpaper can be used 16 1 JUNE 2015 PLASTERBOARD FINISHING GUIDE

17 SHEETROCK LIGHTWEIGHT» ALL PURPOSE JOINT COMPOUND with Sheetrock lightweight all purpose joint compound with dust control; however, higher-quality sandpaper will provide optimal results. These products typically feature a heavier-grade paper and more uniformly bonded grit, which make them less susceptible to sandpaper packing (i.e., sanding dust caught between the back of the sandpaper and the face of the sanding block), which can cause uneven surface sanding. For painting and decorating, follow manufacturer directions for materials used. All surfaces, including applied joint compound, must be thoroughly dry, dust free and not glossy. Sand all joints, fasteners and beads before decorating. Remove any sanding dust from surfaces. If smoothing and dry sanding, use 150-grit sandpaper or 220-grit abrasive mesh cloth, or finer. Sheetrock brand First Coat primer or a comparable interior latex wall primer, that will equalize the texture and porosity variation between the joint compound and the gypsum board face paper, should be applied and allowed to dry before painting, texturing or wallpapering. Walls to be covered with wallpaper or vinyl wallcovering should be sealed per wallcovering manufacturer's instructions. Where walls and ceilings will be subject to severe artificial or natural side lighting and/or decorated with gloss paint (eggshell, semi-gloss or high-gloss), skim-coat gypsum panels with Sheetrock brand conventional weight all purpose joint compound or cover coat compound to improve fastener concealment and minimize decorating problems such as joint banding. Skim coating fills imperfections in joint work, smoothes the paper covering of drywall panels and provides a uniform surface for priming and painting. As an alternative to skim coating, apply Sheetrock brand tuff-hide primer-surfacer. For large projects a mock up of the selected system (substrate, joint compounds and finish coatings) should be evaluated by all responsible parties for suitability, appearance and durability before any large-scale applications begin. Product Data Material: Latex-type formulation. Types: Hand or mechanical application. Freezing Sensitivity: Protect from freezing. Coverage: Approx. 9.4 gal./1,000 ft. 2 (38.3 L/100 m 2 ) of gypsum panels. Compliance with Standards: Meets ASTM Standard C475. VOC Content: <2g/L. Storage Store in dry location and protect from moisture, freezing and exposure to extreme heat and direct sunlight. Keep tightly sealed. Shelf life of unopened container under protected storage conditions is up to nine months. Check product date codes periodically. Rotate stock on first-in, first-out basis. When lifting joint compound packages, observe proper lifting techniques. Keep the load close to your body and use your legs, not your arms, to lift. Use mechanical assistance such as pallet lifters or hand dollies wherever possible. Confine manual lifting and carrying to the shortest possible distance. PLASTERBOARD FINISHING GUIDE 1 JUNE

32 SHEETROCK FIBREGLASS» DRYWALL JOINT TAPEDrywall Joint Tape Unique cross-fiber construction provides greater drywall joint strength and crack resistance than conventional fibreglass mesh tapes. Self-adhesive tape goes on quickly eliminates bedding coat and provides smooth finished joints with just two coats. Use SHEETROCK Brand DURABOND Setting-Type Joint Compound or SHEETROCK Brand EASY SAND Lightweight Setting- Type Joint Compound for first coat over tape. Provides 2-coat, 1-day joint finishing. Description Advantages SHEETROCK Brand Fiberglass Drywall Tape s unique cross-fiberglass construction provides greater plasterboard joint strength and crack resistance than conventional fiberglass mesh tapes. SHEETROCK Fiberglass Drywall Tape resists shrinking, tearing, stretching and distortion. Unique construction Conventional fiberglass mesh tapes can stretch slightly when the joint is deflected. When stretching occurs, joints can crack. In contrast, the unique leno weave construction of SHEETROCK Fiberglass Drywall Tape resists stretching to prevent cracking in drywall joints. Because it achieves greater joint strength than conventional fiberglass tapes, SHEETROCK Fiberglass Drywall Tape is to be used with DURABOND Setting-Type or EASY SAND Lightweight Setting-Type joint compounds for the first coat, and either a setting-type or dryingtype (powder or ready-mixed) joint compound for the second coat. Fewer coats of joint compound SHEETROCK Fiberglass Drywall Tape is self-adhesive, eliminating the embedding or taping coat required with conventional paper tape. Simpler, quicker joint finishing With DURABOND Setting-Type or EASY SAND Lightweight Setting-Type joint compounds, joint finishing can be completed in just one day. Ideal for patching Use SHEETROCK Fiberglass Drywall Tape to easily patch small holes and cracks in plasterboard walls and ceilings. Application Joint Treatment Maintain minimum air, joint comound, tape, and surface temperature of 13 C (55 F) within working area until joints are completely dry. Provide adequate ventilation to carry off excess moisture. Be sure drywall surface is dry and clean. Center and apply SHEETROCK Fiberglass Drywall Tape directly over joint, pressing tape firmly so it adheres evenly. Cut tape with drywall knife. To eliminate wrinkles and ensure maximum bond, press entire length of tape with drywall knife. Avoid overlapping tape at intersections. Cover with a layer of DURABOND Setting-Type or EASY SAND Lightweight Setting-Type joint compound, forcing compound through the tape with a drywall knife/trowel to completely fill and level the joint. Failure to completely fill the joint may result in cracking. Let dry and sand lightly as required. Apply second coat of EASY SAND Lightweight Setting-Type or drying-type (powder or readymixed) joint compound, feathering approximately 50 mm beyond first coat. Let dry and sand lightly as required. To finish inside corners, bend the tape with your fingers to form a U. Apply tape along one side only. Press it into the corner for approximately 300 mm and then apply the other side. Work down the corner in this manner until tape is pressed firmly in place. Apply EASY SAND Lightweight Setting-Type joint compound down the entire length of one side of the corner, then repeat on the other side. Force the compound through the tape, being careful not to cut the tape with drywall knife during the compound application. Let dry and sand lightly as required. Apply second coat of EASY SAND Lightweight Setting-Type or drying-type (powder or ready-mixed) compound, feathering approximately 50 mm beyond first coat. Let dry and sand lightly as required. Finish fastener heads, corner bead and trim with at least three coats of joint compound, (only two coats if using EASY SAND Lightweight Setting-Type Joint Compound) feathered out onto panel faces and sanded as required to a smooth surface. If sanding, use nothing coarser than 180-grit sandpaper, and avoid scuffing paper JUNE 2015 PLASTERBOARD FINISHING GUIDE
