2 1 PROFESSIONAL RANGE OF WALL FINISHING AND REPAIR SOLUTIONS This How To Guide provides you with information on selecting the right product for your finishing or repair project. FINISHING Taping or Jointing is a quicker and lower cost finishing process versus skimming, already used extensively in commercial projects, this technique enables complete project completion in a fraction of time. REPAIR Repairing or making good a wall or ceiling prior to decoration can make the difference between an adequate and superior finish, this guide will show you which product to use to achieve the best result without the need to re-skim.

3 2 FINISHING REPAIR

4 3 JOINTING COMPOUNDS Our compounds are available in three main types; Setting compounds, Air-drying compounds and Hybrid compounds. SETTING COMPOUNDS Typically used for filling and jointing. They are applied by hand and offer low levels of shrinkage. Working Time: This is the length of time the setting product is workable, after which time the product starts to set. Setting Times: Compounds come with specific setting times. These times refer to the approximate amount of time required for the compound to set after it makes contact with water. Times aren t affected by atmospheric humidity. HYBRID COMPOUNDS Combines elements of both setting and air-drying compounds, adding an amount of durability and offering a slightly harder finish over standard air-drying products. They offer a simple one-product solution for two stage processes.

5 4 AIR-DRYING COMPOUNDS Typically used for secondary filling or finishing. They can be hand or machine applied. Air Drying Time: The length of time taken for the product to dry. These times are impacted by external conditions such as humidity and temperature. Table below provides a guidance on drying times. 6 5 TAPING AND JOINTING PRODUCTS The matrix below shows which products to use for either a 2 or 3 stage process. Typically the number of stages required is dependant on the quality of the board installation, however Siniat recommends the 3 stage process for the best possible finish. 8 7 FINISHING TAPING AND JOINTING Taping and Jointing is a simple finishing solution for drylining installations, to reinforce joints to prevent cracking and ensure fire and sound performances are achieved. It is suitable for areas of plasterboard where speed and ease of application can greatly reduce installation time and costs versus a skim finish. TRADITIONAL 3 STAGE PROCESS (Recommended) BEDDING & FILL COAT Tape or bead is bedded into the compound and taper filled out 1 ST FINISH COAT The taper is re-filled with compound where required 2 ND FINISH COAT Final compound layer is applied and sanded for a smooth finish 2 STAGE PROCESS BEDDING & FILL COAT Tape or bead is bedded into the compound and taper filled out 2 ND FINISH COAT Final compound layer is applied and sanded for a smooth finish

Thicker layers will extend drying time GTEC Joint Tape cut to length to be pressed into bedding compound Second coat of jointing compound if required to be applied over dry joint, feathered out 50 60mm beyond the edge of first coat. Finishing coat of compound feathered out 50 60mm beyond second coat. Finished, dry joint to be sanded to smooth finish for sealing and decoration

External corners only: GTEC Flex Tape to be applied in place of GTEC Joint Tape as reinforcement.

13 12 UNIVERSAL SEALER Once the taping and jointing process has been completed, Universal Sealer must be applied to prevent regency striping. This term is used to describe the effect of the paint finish reacting differently on the joints to the surface of the board, if the sealer is not applied the joints may be visible no matter how good the taping and jointing process has been completed. Once dry a paint finish can be applied in the normal manner.

14 13 DECORATION AND SKIM FINISH A traditional skimming plaster finish provides a surface ready to be decorated and is an alternative to GTEC Taping and Jointing in certain applications. It is particularly suitable where the quality of board installation is poor, as it will cover surface imperfections, and where drying out time is not important. APPLICATION Skim plaster can be applied by hand or machine Refer to Skim plaster manufacturer s instructions for application details Boards need to be dust, dirt and grease free, bound installation needs to be sufficiently true to allow the specified thickness of plaster Some plasterboards need to be pre-treated with bonding agent prior to application, the chart across details where this will need to be applied

16 15 PLASTER AND PLASTERBOARD REPAIRS Plaster and plasterboard are fantastic products used in nearly all commercial and residential installations, they provide a flat, smooth, seamless surface for decoration. Over time however that surface can become damaged through knocks, bumps and general wear and tear. Holes, cracks, dents and scrapes can be challenging to repair effectively and poor repairs can ruin the overall finish of a project. Our IT Range repair compounds are lightweight, easy to mix into a smooth consistency, have exceptional workability, low shrinkage and resistance to cracking. They are easy to sand and deliver a quality finish leaving the surface ready for decoration.

17 16 HOLES, CRACKS AND DENTS Fill IT is a setting compound ideal for filling holes, severe cracks, dents and blemishes. It is available in either a 20 or 45 minute working time and set times which are not affected by depth of fill or atmospheric conditions. 18 17 REPAIRING HOLES Patch IT is a self-adhesive perforated aluminium and glass fibre patch suitable for repairing holes where there is a void behind the board. It is ideal for repairing damage from door handles or for covering holes left from moving sockets, switches and spotlights. The patches can be cut to size if required. Damaged area. 2. Cut a hole around the damage to the size of the patch required and clear the space of loose particles. 3. Apply the patch. 4. Cover the patch with GTEC Fill It product. 5. Apply a second coat of the GTEC Fill It product. 6. Sand to give a smooth finish and paint.

19 18 MAKING GOOD PRIOR TO DECORATION Finish IT is a ready mix air drying compound designed to give a smooth easy to sand finish to both plaster and plasterboard. Ideal for levelling and smoothing old plasterboard prior to decoration and for filling minor cracks and imperfections up to 3mm deep. PERFORMANCE BENEFITS No mixing required, ready to apply straight from the bucket Lightweight product, with excellent workability characteristics Low shrinkage Ultra smooth white finish, perfect preparation for decoration Resealable bucket, maximises product usage and minimises waste Very easy to sand to a flat, smooth surface Air drying Recommended sandpaper 120 grit
