Reference description Footbridges on Kampala Northern Bypass Northern Bypass, Kampala, Uganda February 2017 Mota-Engil Africa Client Uganda National Roads Authority Installation of 4 cast in-situ CFA 600mm test piles across the three bridge sites in Kampala, testing of the four test piles to 200% of their working load, installation of the working piles across the three sites. The piles vary in length from 11 to 19m, all 600mm diameter. EAP mobilised a Soilmec CM50 to install the test piles. The test load was resisted by four reaction piles around each test pile, which were installed concurrently with the test piles. The concrete and steel cages were provided by the. EAP mobilised a test rig comprising steel beams and ties and installed temporarily at each location. The load tests were to 200% standard working load in two cycles, one to working load and the second to 200% SWL. The working loads varied between 810kN and 840kN. The testing and piling works were carried out to Uganda ministry of works specifications. Displacement of the pile head was measured by displacement gauges attached to reference beams anchored well away from the pile under test. The pile head movement varied greatly from site to site. At Kyebando the consulting engineer revised the design of the working plies and increased the length following the load test result. Working piles were installed with the same machine and method. Great care had to be taken with piles for the pier in the central reservation since the work took place very close to the existing roadway. As the piles are installed and cut down to cut off level EAP will take data for integrity testing by frequency response method using the TDR2 machine.

Reference description Bidco tank foundations in Jinja Bidco Uganda ltd, Masese, Jinja, Uganda December N/A Client Bidco Uganda Ltd Design and installation of bearing piles for 4no. new tanks for liquid storage at and existing processing and distribution facility in Jinja. 160number CFA piles of 450mm diameter were installed. Piles were drilled to 18m or to refusal and actual pile length was from 10-17m. Bidco Uganda Ltd wished to add 4no. steel skin storage tanks to their existing facility, immediately next to the existing storage. Having completed the ground investigation they sought piling s to complete the foundations. In consultation with Bidco and specialist pile designer in the UK EAP sought to find an efficient solution using CFA piles. EAP found an economy by utilising 450mm diameter piles drilled to refusal in the soil, which stiffened gradually at depth, and allowed the foundation to come in within the Bidco budget. EAP installed a murram platform to level the working surface and bring it up to the required level. The 160no. piles were installed using a Soilmec CM50 piing rig. The small rig was able to work and be rigged in the tight confines of the site. Concrete was batched and delivered by IBF batching plant located in Seeta. Reinforcement cages were tied by EAP on the site. Following installation EAP cut down the excess concrete to the required cut off level, exposing the reinforcement for tying into the pile cap. All the piles and tested for integrity using the TDR2 machine and the frequency response method.

Reference description Nakivubo Waste Water Treatment Plant Sheet Piling Bugolobi, Kampala, Uganda September Roko Construction Ltd. Client National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Provision and installation of sheet piles to protect an excavation at the intake structure of a waste water treatment plant. Sheet piles of profile GPU 17a-600 hammered to full 11.8m length or to refusal in a rectangular wall. Part of the Nakivubo waste water treatment plant. The intake structure for the treatment plant featured a low lying sump pit. The bearing piles had already been installed by East African Piling from a temporary platform at a higher elevation. The base of the sump was some 5m below the platform and the site was too constrained for a battered excavation. The main, Roko, elected to install a sheet pile wall to protect the excavation. EAP diverted previously ordered sheet piles to be delivered directly to the project in order to expedite the works. EAP mobilised a 50T telescopic boom crane and 2.5T hydraulic drop hammer complete with power pack in order to install the piles. EAP constructed a bespoke piling frame to align the piles prior to hammering. The ground conditions were soft for the first 2 or 3 metres only after which they became very stiff. Corner piles were prefabricated off site. Along two sides of the sheet pile wall the sheets met refusal before the full 12m length was installed. For the remaining 2 sides the instructed EAP to predrill the ground into which the sheet piles were to be installed. EAP mobilised the lightweight Soilmec CM50 drilling rig to pre-bore along the line of the sheet pile wall. The remainder of the sheet piles were installed without difficulty. The later mobilised a team to complete the walling of the coffer.

Reference description Nakivubo Waste Water Treatment Plant Bugolobi, Kampala, Uganda February Roko Construction Ltd. Client National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Original scope was for installation of 142 no. 600mm dia. and 110 no. 900mm dia. cast insitu concrete piles up to 25m in length. As the designs for each structure were finalised the number of piles was substantially increased and a total of mm piles and mm piles were installed at the site. The scope also included a 600mm diameter test pile and load test to 250Tonnes and integrity tests on all piles. An upgrade to the waste water treatment plant close to the centre of Kampala, servicing the Nakivubo channel features a number of tanks and processing buildings in the swampy ground. A total of 21 structures were piled. A 600mm test pile was installed and tested. Four 600mm anchor piles were installed to provide the reaction. At twice the working load the pile deflection was measured as just 7mm. The designer was satisfied that this confirmed the suitability of the design and the work commenced. EAP mobilised two CFA piling rigs to the site in Kampala for the execution of these works. Concrete was provided by the client s own batching plant located in central Kampala. Reinforcement cages are made at the client s yard and delivered to site as required. EAP supported the main for an extended period as they struggled to provide working platforms in the low-lying wetland. As the piles were completed they were cropped to the cut off level and tested for integrity on a structure by structure basis. The cropping was performed with EAP s excavator slung hydraulic pile cropper and the integrity test was via the frequency response method using a TDR2 machine.

Reference Ndaiga Bridge Jinja-Malaba Rd, Uganda August 2015 Terrain Ltd. Client Uganda National Roads Authority. (UNRA) Design and installation of 54 working piles and 1 test pile. Load test to 250T. Integrity test on all piles. description EAP undertook an expedited design buil contract as part of the emergency bridge replacement at Ndaiga on the Jinja- Malaba rd. CFA piling proved an efficient method for providing the necessary foundation for the bridge abutments and pier and the whole design build process took less than two months. The original bridge on one of Uganda s most important highways was suffered a failure of one abutment and is to be replaced as a matter of urgency. The preliminary design featured 18 piles under each structure of 15m deep. East African Piling s designer confirmed the number of piles and specified refusal criteria for the length since hard material would be expected and the exact penetration would be different for each pile. Drilling to refusal reduces slightly the efficiency of the CFA method but gives extremely solid end bearing for the piles. Concrete was batched on site by EAP using three carmix self-loading mobile batch mixers. Concrete mix was designed by EAP specifically for CFA piling. CFA piling requires concrete with high and extended workability to facilitate pumping and cage insertion. Reinforcement cages were tied on site. During the installation of the working piles a test pile was installed in order to verify the load capacity for the piles with a load test. In order to supply the necessary reaction 8 anchor piles were installed around the test pile. The pile was loaded to twice the working load of 1234kN. At working load the deflection was measured as 2.5mm and at twice the working load 6mm. EAP followed up with integrity testing of the working piles once they had been reduced to cut off level.

Reference s Namataba Cement Works Namataba, Mukono, Uganda February N/A. Client Kampala Cement Company Ltd. Installation and load testing to 250 tonnes of 2 no. 600mm dia. concrete test piles and over 394 no. working piles. Integrity testing all piles. description EAP mobilised to site and constructed two test piles as per the client s requirements. The test piles were been tested by loading to 250T using a purpose built pile testing rig. Testing and piling were carried out to the specification by Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE-SPERWALL). 394 piles were required across four different structures. The piles were between 10 and 14m long, with reinforcement cages 6 to 10m log. Design verification by 250Tonne load test A working platform was constructed on top of imported stone base fill and polymer reinforcement grid. Concrete was provided by a local batching plant. The reinforcement cages, which typically comprised 20mm vertical bars and 8mm helical bars, were constructed on site. The working piles were installed between 9 th December 2014 and 9 th February 2015, including a two week closure over the Christmas period. All piles were integrity tested using the frequency response method. EAP have the equipment to do such tests. Cage insertion using winch on rig

Reference s Soroti Intake Works Mbale-Soroti Rd, Uganda November 2014 Ambitious Construction Ltd Client National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Installation and integrity testing of 10 no. 600mm dia. 13.5m deep working piles with full-length cages. description The rig and method demonstrated itself once more in water bearing soils immediately adjacent to the Awoja River. Working pile installation for Soroti Water Intake Works Concrete was batched on site by EAP using three carmix self-loading mobile batch mixers. Concrete mix was designed by EAP specifically for CFA piling. CFA piling requires concrete with high and extended workability to facilitate pumping and cage insertion. Nine piles were installed immediately next to the bridge abutment to support pumping station, while the tenth was installed in the river bed for the inlet itself. Access to this single pile was made via a causeway of hard core and clay with a murram top. EAP concrete batching equipment Reinforcement cages were tied at the company base in Kampala and transported complete to site. Soilmec CM50 when being rigged at site Data from the rig computer system provides complete information on the pile depth and concrete volume from an array of sensors on the rig. EAP followed up with impulse response method integrity testing of all piles to confirm soundness of the construction.

Reference s Katonga Bridge Kampala Masaka Rd., Uganda September 2013 Reynolds Construction Company Client Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) Installation and load testing of 1 no. 600mm dia. test pile using 4 reaction piles. Installation of 32 no. 600mm dia. 21m deep cast insitu concrete working piles. description The brief of installing the 600mm dia. cast insitu concrete piles under the abutments and piers of Katonga bridge was achieved through the construction of temporary piling platforms in the Katonga river. Test pile set up The test pile was successfully load tested to 200 tonnes with less than 4mm settlement, after a period of design optimisation by the Clients Engineer EAP successfully installed all 32 no. working piles in under a month. Working pile installation at Katonga bridge Piles were installed using the CFA method with unusually long 20m reinforcing cages. This was made possible by careful concrete control and a well co-ordinated piling operation to eliminate delay in the insertion of reinforcement. Rig computer pile log. Data from the pile is recorded by the rig computer and a report of every pile produced.
