2 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 This Method Statement has been prepared by Trevor Bridge Associates Ltd (TBA) on behalf of Redrow Homes North West, in relation to a proposed housing development at land off Penrhos Road, Bangor. 1.2 It has been prepared to ensure that the existing trees and shrubs are properly protected throughout the development of the site and continue to represent a visual amenity in the future. It instructs all contractors on methods to avoid damage to the trees. 1.3 The Method Statement recommends all development within influencing distance of trees is carried out in accordance with BS5837:2012 Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction - Recommendations. Any development affecting trees must be supervised by an arboricultural consultant. 1.4 The Method Statement outlines the protection of trees prior to the main construction work of the dwellings. This will be undertaken sequentially A) Installation of protective fence B) Main construction works C) Cycleway construction D) Removal of protective fence 2.0 GUIDELINES FOR FILLING IN THE METHOD STATEMENT 2.1 The developer should enforce the methods of protection identified within the statement. All contractors must also agree to them. Any failure to comply with them must be dealt with by the developer e.g. disciplinary action against operatives seen within the protected area. 2.2 The people listed are those with a responsibility for tree protection on the site and from the Local Planning Authority. The relevant people should be contacted in the event of a problem. 3.0 AGREEMENT TO PROTECT TREES 3.1 The developer has agreed to undertake tree protection to the standard advised in the Method Statement. Every contractor on site must receive a copy of the statement and abide by its contents. 4.0 DRAWINGS 4.1 This Method Statement should be read in conjunction with the Tree Survey Reports, The Arboricultural Impact Assessment and the detail TBA98 Protective Barrier.

4 6.0 SPECIFICATION FOR PROTECTION TO EXISTING TREES: FENCING AND GENERAL 6.1 The position and acceptability of the protective fencing must be agreed with the local authority prior to site works commencing and shall generally be set at the extent of the root protection areas (RPA) unless agreed otherwise. Fencing must accord with the general requirements of section 6.2 of BS Signs shall be attached to the fencing stating Construction Exclusion Zone No Access. 6.2 Under no circumstances must any materials be stored under the canopy of existing trees, and no cement, diesel or oil stored near to them. 6.3 No fires should be lit within, or near to, the canopy of existing trees. 6.4 No ropes, cables, services, or notice boards shall be fixed to existing trees. 6.5 The levels around existing trees must be neither raised nor reduced. 6.6 Where working space is limited temporary ground protection may be considered appropriate as described in section 6.2 of BS This is only acceptable with prior consent, in writing, from the local authority. 6.7 Under no circumstances must vehicles, plant or machinery enter the Root Protection Areas (RPA)
5 7.0 SPECIFICATION FOR HARD SURFACED AREA CONSTRUCTION WITHIN TREE ROOTING ZONES (CELLWEB / NEOWEB). 7.1 The work as detailed within this Method Statement shall be carried out under the supervision of the Arboriculturist with progress reports issued to the LPA. Full liaison between all parties, comprising the contractor, sub-contractors, the Arboriculturist and the Landscape Architect together with the issuing of progress reports to the LPA, will be undertaken at all stages of the work. 7.2 All excavation works for the purposes of constructing new hard surfaced areas (cycle path) will be undertaken in accordance with section 7.4 of BS No machinery or powered tools are to be used at any stage of excavation works, unless agreed with the local authority. 7.4 Vegetation and small shrubs will be removed by hand there must be no skimming of the soil. 7.5 All construction work shall be undertaken by hand. 7.6 A permeable geotextile membrane (Terram or similar approved) shall be laid over the rooting layer, allowing 300mm overlap on all edges. 7.7 Neoweb or Cellweb 100 shall be laid over the membrane, in accordance with the manufacturer s specification. The infill material shall be lime free, no fines, crushed stone. 7.8 MOT type one or other, locally won, approved stone shall be laid in accordance with the Sustrans Specification over the Neoweb or Cellweb 100. The edge restraint shall be Exceledge Brickedge with galvanized driven stakes or timber edgings, 38mm x 150mm boards, and fixed with 75 x 75 x 750mm posts. 7.9 Levels under the tree canopy shall not be raised. Only the edge restraint shall be blinded over with soil and seeded as required.
6 8.2 OTHER ARBORICULTURAL WORKS 8.2 All site personnel shall be equipped with and make use of personal protective equipment in accordance with current Health and Safety Procedures. 8.2 The carrying out of all arboricultural operations and use of equipment shall be in accordance with BS Recommendations for Tree Works and current Health and Safety Executive and industry codes of practice. 8.3 Damage to retained trees and hedges will not be permitted and if any contractor considers that existing retained vegetation is at risk he shall stop work and inform the supervising Arboriculturist
