1 GCSE Resistant Materials Curriculum Map Learning Focus/Criteria Timbers Emerging Learner Know the names of some different woods used within Resistant Materials. Describe what an alloy is and suggest examples of this. Understand that different heat treatments can be applied to metals to change their characteristics. Explain and recognise the differences between ferrous and nonferrous metals. Choose some advantages and disadvantages of some metals in relation to different products. Explain In detail why metals are combined to form alloys. Compare different working characteristics of common forms of metals and link then to typical products. Compose a piece of work to explain hardening, tempering, annealing and explain their suitability.

2 Plastics Identify and list some products made from plastic. Name the 2 groups that plastics fit into. Recognise that some plastics can be environmentally friendly. Outline the basic stages of the lifecycle of a plastic bottle. Have an understanding that some plastics are environmentally friendly. Describe what Thermosetting and Thermoplastics are. Identify different plastic products and what group they fit into, either Thermoplastic or Thermosetting. Correctly sequence the stages of the lifecycle of a plastic bottle. Explain what a thermoplastic and thermosetting plastic is with reference to particular plastics. Suggest names of plastic products and rearrange them into each group depending on plastic classification Summarize the stages of the life cycle of a bottle including some environmentally considerations. Explain the differences between thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics, with reference to certain plastics/products. Judge the working characteristics of both thermosetting and thermoplastics, and typical products they produce. Consider the environmental impact of plastics; suggest if the plastic products could be recycled or not. Justify each stage of the lifecycle of a plastic bottle and suggest environmental implications and possible solutions to reduce them. Compare the similarities and differences between Thermosetting and Thermoplastics including referencing examples of products and their Environmental implications. Review the range of different plastics, thermosetting and thermoplastic, and be able to select a suitable material and match to a product depending on their characteristics. Clearly assess the lifecycle of a plastic bottle at each stage and the environmental impact. Suggestions to how this process could be more environmentally friendly with reference to sustainable energy sources and materials.

3 Composite Materials Outline what a composite material is Describe the definition of what a composite material is Explain the reasons why composites are commonly used rather just single materials. Determine the strengths and weaknesses of at least one composite material Summarize the properties of a composite material and explain why the materials improve the overall efficiency of the product. Smart/Modern Materials Nanomaterials List some examples of smart or modern materials Identify what a nanomaterial is Select examples of composites Explain what a smart and a modern material is Describe what a nanomaterial is made from and offer and example Suggest why materials are turned into composites Examine composite materials such as carbon Fibre, and GRP. Rank some advantages and disadvantages of some smart and modern materials Identify the difference between a modern and smart material Calculate why nanomaterials are particularly useful Choose a product which uses a composite material and assess its suitability. Investigate the properties of smart materials such as Thermochromic Ink Nitinol, Polymorph and modern material PotatoPak Conclude typical products which could suit smart or modern material technologies introduced within them Predict strengths and weaknesses of a nanomaterial such as Self- Cleaning glass or anti-bacterial coatings. Justify how a product could be improved with the implantation of a smart or modern material and how this improves the function or quality of it. Determine the environmental impact of using modern material PotatoPak in comparison to other materials. Compare different nanomaterials and their suitability in various products Give an example of hoe a product could be improved with the introduction of a nanomaterial Judge if nanomaterials can change the characteristics of a material when used to form a nanocomposite. Review the effectiveness s of nanomaterials and

4 compare the environmental consequences of using nanomaterials Adhesives/Glues Finishes List the names of some different types of glues Name at least 3 different types of finishes which can be applied to any material. Identify a range of different adhesives that could be used on different materials. Suggest different finishes that could be applied to a timber, and a metal. Select different finishes that can be applied to timbers and metals Link different adhesives that can be used with certain materials. Draw a diagram to explain how adhesives can be applied to certain materials, including Epoxy Resin Link different finishes to certain materials and suggest why they are needed. Including, paint, varnish, dip coating, zinc. Compare different adhesives and suggest their suitability for one material over another. Determine the health and safety precautions when using certain types of glues ( Eg: Epoxy Resin, Tensol) Determine the functions/purpose of applying different finishes to a range of materials; such as Timber and metal. Investigate what is meant by a veneer. Evaluate the effectiveness of a wide range of adhesives when applied to timbers, plastics and metals. Choose health and safety regulations which need to be adhered to when using different types of adhesives Draw the process of galvanising metal with Zinc ( Stainless Steel) Develop a diagram of a veneer, labelling individual parts and justify what they are made from and why those materials are used. Evaluate the suitability of different finishes when applied to materials with the consideration of environmental factors, including finishes for woods and metals. ( paint, varnish, wax, oil, dip coating, galvanizing, veneers) Fixings State the names of different components and fixings used to make products. Describe what a component or fixing is and link to an example. Recognise different components and fixings that can be used for wood, plastic and metal. Including hinges, catches, locks. Draw diagrams of different fixings and suggest which material they are most suitable to be used with. Argue advantages and disadvantages of a range of different fixtures and fittings and their suitability within the manufacture of different products. Test how different components and fixings can be applied to different materials. Select certain fixings and evaluate and recommend their effectiveness for certain material choices.

5 Designing to meet User Needs Designing/Drawing Methods Know about a range of different types of users Research using various sources to help inform designs when designing. State the meaning of CAD/CAM. State various hand drawing techniques in order to present an idea. Reflect upon possible needs/wants of different users Identify factors which might influence a design in order for it to suit the user more effectively. Analyse a range of products and evaluate their effectiveness. Explain what CAD/CAM is including an example Use 2D and 3D drawing techniques, including perspective to present drawings. Consider the use of colour/rendering techniques to present ideas Assess the differences between a want and a need in reference to a user s requirements when designing a product. Compare and contrast existing products and make critical judgements about their manufacture and design. Predict what is meant by Ergonomic and Anthropometric Data Determine some advantages and disadvantages of different CAD software and CAM machines. Present a range of 3D design ideas which take inspiration from research which include evidence of considered rendering Recommend alterations to existing products to make them suit the needs of the identified user more effectively. Choose appropriate manufacture, aesthetic appeal in order to create an in-depth analysis of products and their suitability for purpose Decide what Ergonomics is in reference to an existing product and how it helps to improve the user s experience. Generate a wide range of 3D creative design ideas, taking the user into consideration to product unique and interesting ideas. Designs presented in 3D, including Isometric, which have consideration to colour, shape and manufacture. Argue the effectiveness Design a new product which totally supports the needs and requirements of the user and explain how these changes make the product more effective. Follow set criteria in order to fully meet the requirements needed. Select/ Use existing ergonomics and anthropometric data to review and modify existing/new design ideas to suit needs of the user more effectively. Compare and evaluate effectiveness of various CAM machinery for the production of different products. Ideas drawn are creative and demonstrate some flair and originality and reference previously done research. Select the most effective CAM method of manufacture products and can explain how they work. Generate a wide range of innovative and adventurous ideas,drawn in 3D and carefully rendered which also take into consideration the needs of the user as well as possibilities of materials, aesthetics and

6 of applying suitable render to design ideas manufacturing processes. Evaluation/Analysis of Ideas List words commonly used when describing or explaining something Identify the meaning of CAFE QUE Discuss why evaluating a product/analysing is important to push the idea further Predict what a design specification is and how to evaluate product against this. Review and develop designs created with the intention of reducing parts in order to simplify its construction or manufacture in quantity. Evaluate the effectiveness of the criteria and alter in response to user feedback and testing In order to create a detailed and well planned design specification suited to the product intended. SMSC (Social, Moral, Cultural, Environmental, sustainability and Economic Issues) Know what SMSC stands for Recognise that products have an impact on different people s lifestyles. Interpret what is meant by a Social, Moral, Cultural, Environmental and Economic Issue in relation to the manufacture of a product Eg: A T-shirt Select and investigate different SMSC issues within the manufacture, use and disposal of a product. Understand that designing and making reflects and influence cultures and societies Assess the sustainability and environmental issues associated with the designing and making of a product Predict what the 6 Rs are: repair, reduce, recycle, reuse, rethink, refuse. Reflect upon different SMSC issues and design a product which reduces the impact upon these Rearrange the 6R s in terms of importance to create a positive environmental impact Evaluate products in terms of financial and human costings involved within the designing and making processes. Rate a range of different SMSC issues which can affect the designing and manufacture of a product and suggest alternative methods to improve this.

7 Health and Safety Processes and Manufacture Identify hazards within the workshop. Describe and explain how to be safe within the workshop, including the use of correct PPE ( googles, Apron, mask etc) Recognise that safety of the individual is essential; take responsibility to ensure that hazards are minimised and the working environment is safe to use, including leaving equipment in a safe manner and returning dangerous/hazardous materials to prep room. Outline what COSHH means Observe health and safety regulations when working with tools, equipment, components and materials Justify how a product should be safe for a user to use. Review and alter the design. Manufacture of a product if it doesn t meet the required requirements of a safe product. Summarize safety within school and within industry as well as quality checks taken out, including the awarding of the KITE MARK ( BSI), CE mark, and LION Mark List different machines used in school environment to manufacture products. Outline how basic machinery such as pillar drill, belt sander and Hegna saws can be used. Candidates should be aware of and use as appropriate, manufacturing processes and techniques including CAD and CAM. Select and use appropriate materials, tools and equipment for the job required Understand how different machinery operate including the line bender, oven and Vacuum Former. Know how to use marking out tools, equipment and processes including the use of templates Judge how a template or jig can be used to create accurate pieces of work. Determine industrial and commercial awareness and be familiar with the processes involved in manufacturing in quantity. Assess different manufacturing processes including manufacturing products in quantity. Highlight various product examples and link to - one-off production, -Batch production -, Mass production, and -Continuous production. Select and be familiar with and able to use a range of equipment that is used for forming and bending commonly used materials such as wood, plastic and metal for line bending, laminating, and scroll work in metal. Compare and contrast different manufacturing in quantity processes and explain advantage and disadvantages of them. Compare different Industrial manufacturing processes/machinery in order to determine the best machinery to do the job. Select from a wide range of tools and equipment to perform a wide range of different jobs. Can summarize how different machinery operates and then can make alterations in the design of the product if required Evaluate different manufacturing in quantity processes including the importance of just-in Time manufacturing and how this can save on energy, time and money.

8 Quality Control Joining Methods List some methods of joining materials together ( Wood, metal and plastic) Identify different methods of joining a product together within the 3 resistant materials. Predict the most effective method of joining for each material. Compare the difference between permanent and nonpermanent methods of joining materials together- inc example. Examine different joining methods including -Adhesives Wood Joints Knock-Down fittings Screws, Rivets, bolts Welding, Brazing, Soldering Understand what a quality control check is and why it is required. Give examples of products/manufacturing line where checks could be done. Incorporate quality checks during the making of product Draw a wide range of different joining methods and connect to the correct material choice. Determine which are more effective- Knock down Joints or traditional wooden joints and explain your findings. Implement and rate quality control procedures using devices to ensure the consistent production of products eg: Biscuits in a factory. Choose advantages and disadvantages of different joining methods and assess which ones are most suitable for various products and jobs. Recognise the need for quality control checks at various stages of manufacture of a product. Make alternations/improvements to the manufacture of the product in the light of checks made. Judge and evaluate your knowledge and understanding of a range of different joints by creating various examples of these joints Information and Communication Technology Show use of ICT as appropriate to research, record, gather, sort and present relevant material for the researching and planning of a project. Illustrate ideas using CAD to generate, develop, model and communicate design ideas; Use CAD to support accurate drawings with use of sizes, using 3D and 3rd angle orthographic projections and consider alternative forms and colours when developing ideas. Determine the economic importance and benefits of using CAD/CAM in the production of products; Assess the introduction of CAM for manufacturing in quantity, including various CAM machinery Recommend and rate latest technologies in designing and making products and evidence within product design work. Choose appropriate methods of designing and manufacturing using various CAD/CAM solutions to showcase innovative design ideas.
