11 The art of building! SIP Structural Insulated Panels Structcan can assist Architects, Engineers, Designers and Builders who are considering the use of SIPs for their construction projects. Origins: The SIPs concept was initially introduced in 1935, and is nowadays used worldwide in residential, institutional, light industrial and commercial applications. Ideal for affordable housing projects, remote and temporary locations or emergency and natural disaster building need solutions. Frank Lloyd Wright used an early form of SIPs in his Usonian houses built in the 1930 s, 40 s and 50 s. In 1952 Alden B. Dow created the first foam core SIPs which will be mass produced later on in the 1960 s. Panels created in 1935 by the Forest product Laboratory that were used to build test homes, were disassembled and tested 30 years later to reveal that the panels had retained their Initial strengths values 9

12 SIP Structural Insulated Panels Structural Insulated Panels SIP Description: StructCan SIPs: a high-performance construction system used in exterior walls, roofs and floors for residential and light commercial and industrial construction. StructCan sip panels are made by sandwiching a core of rigid engineered Polyisocyanurate foam insulation between layers of wood structural panels, typically oriented strand board (OSB). Other panel compositions are also available including sheet metal, plywood, fiber cement siding, magnesium oxide board, fiberglass mat gypsum sheeting and other composite structural composite panels. Panels are typically 4 X 8 ft. up to jumbo panels of 8 X 24 ft. Panel thickness ranges from 3 1/2 up to 12 inches depending on the insulation R value and structural resistance needed. Prefabricated SIP panels are easily assembled on the job site. Panels can be assembled together with SIP beams or locked together with hex quarter-turn assembly wrench mechanisms. Applications and Design Structural Insulated Panels SIP can be used to build custom homes. They are a perfect fit with timber frames and architectural designs with voluminous and open interior spaces. SIPs are perfect for affordable housing with initial low labor costs, and long term heating or cooling energy costs savings for occupants.* SIPs allow to close a building quickly, covering large spans without additional supports. SIPs provide a healthy indoor environment suitable for schools and office spaces. The entire building process from design to finished construction takes less time with a SIP structure. SIPs components will always be straight and cut with close tolerances. Traverse and racking load tests confirm the strength and transverse load resistance of SIPs, requiring less additional supports in high seismic and wind areas. SIPs can allow higher architectural ceiling or clearance heights at no additional cost. Mechanical systems such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC can be easily integrated into SIPs systems. Exterior and roofing finishes completion are easily done. Fire rating and protection for 15 minutes, one hour and two hour rating is achieved by separating the foam insulation and selecting the proper building panel composition using gypsum drywall or other fire resistant materials to achieve separation. SIPs offer inherent advantages due to their engineered fabrication and structural abilities. Ideal for roofing solutions SIP structural insulated panel system allows reducing the thickness of the roof to 8 / 200 mm, instead of the / mm thickness required with a conventional wood-frame structure.
