2 To Sark or Not to Sark, By: Matthew Smith Chief Engineer that is the question Roof sarking provides an extremely economical and efficient secondary barrier to environmental elements entering the roof space as well as improving thermal insulation properties. So why aren t more roofs sarked? A recent report issued by James Cook University, Cyclone Testing Station, into a storm event in Brisbane gave a main recommendation that all tile roofs in all wind areas (i.e. both cyclonic and noncyclonic) have sarking installed over the full roof area. The report found that water can leak through undamaged tiles and cause significant problems to unsarked roofs, resulting in the ceiling plaster becoming water logged and collapsing. Reports from CSIRO have also confirmed that sarking can dramatically reduce temperature variations The other benefit with sarking is that it can reflect radiant heat and can be a fire retardant. and condensations in the roof space. It also provides ongoing physical protection against the elements such a dust and water penetration into the roof space. Another benefit of sarking is that it can reflect radiant heat and also act as a fire retardant. There are a variety of different types of sarking available but almost all will have some benefit in increasing the thermal properties of a building. Under the Building Code of Australia s (BCA) energy efficiency chapter there are requirement to achieve a certain R-value. A product s R-value refers to its thermal resistance. Depending on where you live in Australia, you must achieve a minimum R-value - sarking can help you achieve required R-values. Sarking roofs is currently only compulsory in a few situations (especially with long rafter lengths and a wind speed greater than N3- see table below); however Multinail recommends sarking all roofs. As a Multinail roof truss fabricator who is always looking to provide a quality product that continues to protect end users from Australia s harsh environment, you should also emphasise to local builders and customers that sarking all tile roofs is good practice. Table 1 Sarking requirements for tiled roofs Roof pitch (degrees)s Maximum rafter length without sarking (mm) 18 > > Note: The maximum rafter length is measured from the topmost point of the rafter downwards. Where the maximum rafter length is exceeded, sarking must be installed over the remainder of the rafter length. 2 Multimail // Autumn edition // March 2010
3 Don t Run With Scissors When I say don t run with scissors I really mean don t rush in and tell a customer they can have a raised ceiling with scissor trusses before thinking about a few things first. By: Matthew Smith Chief Engineer Raised ceilings are often used in residences to create the feel of a larger room and provides allowance for interesting lighting features such as chandeliers. One popular way to achieve raised ceilings is using scissor trusses. You must remember that scissor trusses spread outwards when loaded. Truss design software limits this horizontal spread to a maximum of 12mm as additional spread will start affecting ceiling plaster and external claddings. The ability of scissor trusses to resist spreading depends on their stiffness and like all trusses this depends on their overall depth. Take for example a normal 10 roof. See figure 1. Being only approximately 700mm high in the middle, if this truss was carrying tiles it would struggle to span over 8m. The same applies for scissor trusses when the difference in top and bottom chord pitches is only 10. See figure 2. When advising customers of the maximum pitch for ceilings, you must reference the roof pitch. A good rule of thumb is to have a 15 difference in pitches for tile roofs and a minimum 10 difference for sheet roofs. You must also ensure that you maintain reasonable depth in your trusses in all areas of the roof. For example, you cannot extend a raised ceiling to a hip end and cause the ceiling to project up through the roof. Of cause this is not physically possible and must be carefully planned. See figure 3. Figure TC TC Figure Figure 3
4 Multinail Machinery - The New Generation of Roof Truss Machinery Not satisfied to rest on our laurels, over the last two years Multinail Machinery has been developing the truss plant of the future. Multinail Machinery has developed with a new roof truss combination to address issues associated with reduced floor size and increased plant capabilities due to constant demands for increasingly complex roof shapes, the need to lower factory labour requirements and the cost and availability of land pressuring for reduced factory sizes. Now it is possible to see the truss plant of the future. With only two pieces of capital equipment, our management software Small in size yet massive in capabilities program (Factory Management System), you can establish world-class truss production lines! This solution can fit inside the space of an international tennis court while maintaining full plant materials handling capabilities and material storage requirements. Another benefit offered by this combination is that a single supplier is offering the complete solution. If there are problems, you simply call a single supplier who can rapidly respond to any software, machinery, technical or engineering issues. The benefits from using a singlesource supplier ensure rapid response and provide a good return on investment. The key to the success of this system One Source One Supplier Only One Contender - Multinail Game, Set and Match. The MAC saw is a fully automated timber processing console that accepts raw stock from the automated timber feeder, processes members and delivers them to the timber sorting and kickoff area. Multnail s state of the art, user-friendly software allows the operator to load, cut, mark and stack-cut members with virtually no involvement in the saw operation. 5 Set up a plant in a area as small as a tennis court Mini 12 As the truss evolution continues, trusses are becoming bigger and more complicated, although assembly skills remain the same. This has created significant demand from truss plant owners for a bigger table area with automatic jigging and easy, nonmanual removal of trusses from the table so Multinail rose to the challenge and created the Mini 12. Although called a Mini 12 - in reality this machine is quite large in terms of size, weight, capability and performance - while still remaining sufficiently compact to sit comfortably in most truss manufacturing operations. As with all Multinail table presses, the Mini 12 continues to set the fabrication industry standard with its safety features and outstanding performance. 6 Stepping Down With current building practices requiring a lower floor level for wet areas, Multinail has now Incorporated this into FloorSource by allowing multiple types of floor trusses to be designed allowing for this step down. This new function has been broken into two tasks. The first is to simply allow SpanJoists to be lowered by a set timber depth and then to have an extra TC or Supplementary TC added to the top of the joist so that the overall depth equals the final floor depth. The SpanJoist is lowered by the depth of a timber stock member e.g. 35mm or 45mm or any size member that is created by the user (e.g. 55mm by ripping a larger member to this size). This feature only affects SpanJoists at this stage. As we are changing the depth of the joist to a specific depth (using a variable depth SpanJoist), the finished depth of the lowered joist may or may not fit the fixed sizes of steel webs. If the step down function is set on a SteelWood or MultiStrut Joist, FloorSource automatically convers the joist to a SpanJoist. As the step down area on a joist is only required for wet areas, and is only formed on part of the joist, you do not need to set the entire floor area to the lowered / step down depth. The initial floor area is still set to suit the true or overall floor joist depth. You can then create a Load Area. When the Load Area is created on the layout you can select the Flooring Material option. When setting the flooring material for the load area, a new option is now available that lets you define the area as a Step Down Joist. When the step down joist option is selected, you can select the required size and grade for the Supplementary Top Chord. The depth of the supplementary top chord defines the step down depth. Load Area - Created on the Layout Load Area Input Form, selecting Flooring Material Load Area Input Form, setting the Supp TC Size The step down is formed by lowering the SpanJoist by the depth of the supplementary top chord and by nailing the supplementary top chord to the joist after manufacture to create a step down SpanJoist. The Supplementary Top Chord is not a designed member; it is simply an additional member to raise the height of the joist for a selected part of the joist. Joists Converted to a SpanJoist The Supplementary Top Chord is only required to be nailed to the manufactured joist using 3.05Ø x 75mm nails fixed at 600mm centers. The fixing detail is also noted on all step down joist cutting sheets. There is a Multinail Technical Sheet defining the fixing method which should be supplied with the job when it goes to site or when requested by certifiers/engineers etc. 6 Multimail // autumn edition // March 2010
7 Joists Converted to a SpanJoist Similar to the cutting sheet, the step down joist details are also displayed in the FMS on the floor station with the fixing note, so the work station has the correct information when fixing the supplementary top chord in the factory. 8 South Australian Ministerial Task force Our Compliance So far Multinail fabricators in South Australia can be assured that we are on track for full compliance with all recommendations from the South Australian Ministerial Task force. Multinail is committed to ensuring that our software, training systems and participation comply with all building codes standards, regulations and are adapted to any changing requirements as they occur. Our commitment to our fabricators ensures we are ahead of our competitors. For several years, Multinail s Truss Design engine has been certified by third party engineers to confirm that our structural analysis of loads applied to Timber Roof Trusses and the resulting forces in truss members are correct. In addition Multinail already covers some items as per the Ministerial Task forces recommendations on software outputs from nail plate suppliers, including: Truss, frame and floor layouts are separated. Multinail frame and floor layouts can be printed with critical loads. TrusSource creates a roof bracing layout Service load units like Air Conditioning units and Solar Hot Water Systems are drawing and loaded to the layout. Multinail software also produces a range of product submission reports showing design results and loading details suitable for certifiers to inspect and approve. Training records for all participants are maintained for all Multinail software training and release training sessions. 1-1B Name : Date : / / Timber Estimation 1-2A Name : Date : / / Competent Not Yet Competent Multinail Training Material Timber Estimation Name : Date : / / Multinail Training Material Timber Technology Assessor : 1-2A timber estimation training check list trainee: level: estimation trainer: training date: / / Fabricator: Multinail Training roof Framing & terminology Timber Estimation Please ensure all appropriate points are covered and ticked when completed.
