Marble Consolidation Why? Protects and strengthens deteriorating carbonate building stones such as marble. Reduces the vulnerability of treated stones to the ravages of air pollution, acid rain and normal weathering. Dramatically increases the resistance of marbles to acid attack and strengthens deteriorating carbonate stones. Marble Consolidation Why? Protects and strengthens deteriorating carbonate building stones such as marble. It reduces the vulnerability of treated stones to the ravages of air pollution, acid rain and normal weathering. Dramatically increases the resistance of marbles to acid attack, and strengthens deteriorating carbonate stones.
Marble Consolidation Consolidation Application Instructions Apply to the point of rejection. Allow the treatment to be absorbed for 30 minutes or until surface is visibly dry and absorbent. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until three saturating applications have been completed. In areas where deterioration is advanced, additional applications may be required. Allow surfaces treated to dry for 30 minutes or until surface is visibly dry. Note: A minimum of 30 minutes drying time is essential between applications. If necessary, drying time may be extended overnight without adverse effects. Finishing Rinse Apply the Finishing Rinse to the point of rejection. Allow treated surfaces to dry for 24 hours before surface repairs. Marble Consolidation Leak from above created copper staining as well as sugaring of marble. This area was consolidated to help slow further deterioration.
Selective Re-pointing Inspect and re-point as required. Many different colors of mortar are visible. Previous campaigns through the years (including caulk in some limited areas). Removing the mortar. Skyward Facing Joints Lead Tees
Fractured, Loose and Missing Elements Injecting epoxy in a stainless steel pin hole for marble repairs. Minimum dutchman repairs a very strong difference in texture and slight difference in color were identified in the mock up. Fractured, Loose and Missing Elements Scope change depending on existing condition
General Cleaning Nebulized Mist-Method of cleaning with a concentrated fog. The Substrate is saturated and the stain rises to the surface for easy removal. General Cleaning
General Cleaning Cleaning Stains Types of Stains Biological Calcium Sulfate Carbon build up Copper stains Rust stains Tar stains Some marble stains required up to 4 to 5 applications of a poltice.
Cleaning Stains Cleaning of the biological growth at the cornice level. The cleaning was performed with a very low PSI equipment and a mild cleaner. Cleaning Stains Drip edge and heavily copper stained area on marble. Treated with three applications of a cleaning material and two applications of a poultice. None of the applications removed the stain, due to its depth in the stone.
Stone Delamination Many areas of limestone and marble delamination were directly below Leaking Gutters. LIMESTONE AND MARBLE REPAIR Craftsmen had to match up the marble veining for each of the marble repairs. Several different mortar colors were use to create a marble repair.
Stone Repairs Stone Repairs
Stone Repairs Apprentice Program Stone Repairs Sandblasting the stone clips. Sandblasting and coating a rust inhibitive material. These areas were then repaired.
Defective Building Treatments Defective Building Treatments Previous epoxy repair replacement and rust cleaner application.
Defective Building Treatments Anchors discovered in column volutes from previous work. Defective Building Treatments Flashing previously installed under 17th Street pediment. These were the source of significant iron staining. Steel corrosion will exert enough pressure over time to split the stone
Defective Building Treatments Some of these patches are cracking again, which could be caused by the patch material or the continued rusting of the clips behind them Flashing, Gutter Repairs, Ponding Water, Drainage issues
Flashing, Gutter Repairs, Ponding Water, Drainage issues Thru-wall flashing visible in joint toward bottom of scupper. Previous roof work encapsulated the through wall flashing. Ponding water and leaking at cornice. Stained Glass Restoration Metal was cleaned with an anionic cleaning compound (so it did not remove the patina). The loose glazing was removed with hand tools, and it was reglazed with Linseed Glazing Putty.
Stained Glass Restoration Re-glazing the stained-glass window. On Time Completion
