4 SECTION 3: PRODUCTS MANUFACTURERS A. Approved manufacturers are as follows: MATERIALS The synthetic turf material and resilient infill shall be in accordance with the following: 1. A complete synthetic grass system, consisting of not less than two and half (2 ") inch long, not less than 34 oz. /not more than 48 oz. per square yard of extruded monoflament polyethylene pile blended fiber, with rows spaced no less than 1/ 2" apart, tufted into a double primary porous backing and a micro - porous secondary coating. 2. A resilient infill system, consisting of a layered mixture of selected and graded dust -free sand and smooth, rounded rubber mixture in the middle and a layer of smooth, rounded rubber on top, designed to provide the look, feel, and safety of optimally maintained natural grass. The infill shall be filled so that there is a void of 1/ 2" to the top of the fiber. 3. The infill weights shall be a minimum of six ( 6) pounds per square foot of layered ground rubber and sand. Systems with an all rubber, all sand or coated sand filling; and /or systems with an infill of less than 40 % -60% sand & rubber infill ratio ( the rubber component being at least 3 lbs. per square foot) will not be accepted. 4. The fiber shall be not less than 8, 500 nor more than 10, 000 denier, low friction, monofilament fiber, measuring not less than 2 inches high and not less than 100 and not more than 130 microns in thickness. Fibers shall have been extruded individually through a spinneret, stretched and twisted. Monofilament systems with less than a 2 inch fiber, fibrillated slit -film, slit -tape, will not be accepted as equal. 5. The tufted fiber weight shall not be less than 34 ounces /more than 48 ounces per square yard. The low friction fiber shall be custom blended polyethylene, treated with UV inhibitors. The tuft bind must be greater than 10 lbs tensile strength without infill. 6. The carpet' s primary backing shall be a double or triple- layered polypropylene fabric treated with UV inhibitors. The secondary backing shall consist of an application of heat - activated urethane to permanently lock the fiber tufts in place. Backing must drain at a rate of 50" per hour regardless of drainage method. 7. Rubber must be smooth, rounded, ground SBR rubber manufactured from certified California tires. 8. Sand must be dust free, rounded, sand; any other sand will not be accepted. 9. Non -tufted or inlaid lines and markings shall be applied with paint approved by the Synthetic Turf Manufacturer. 10. Thread for sewing seams of turf shall be as recommended by the Synthetic Turf Manufacturer. 11. Glue for joining of seams and inlaying lines and markings shall be as recommended by the Synthetic Turf Manufacturer. Seams between turf panels must be sewn or glued. Inlaid markings may not be installed by means of cutting through the fabric and adhering the colored turf to a separate reinforcing tape or cloth. Rather, inlaid markings ( that cannot be tufted into the fabric), shall be installed by means of shearing out the existing green fiber and laying in a new piece of colored fabric into a bed of suitable " hot melt" or approved equal adhesive placed directly on the original turf backing material. Systems that cut through the turf fabric for inlaid lines are not acceptable due to the fact that such a procedure shall weaken the structural integrity of the turf fabric backing EXECUTION: A. The installation shall be performed in full compliance with approved Shop Drawings. SYNTHETIC TURF SURFACING 4 Section AFCI 2009 Page 4

5 B. Only trained technicians, skilled in the installation of athletic caliber synthetic turf systems working under the direct supervision of the approved installer /manufacturer supervisors, shall undertake any cutting, sewing, gluing, shearing, topdressing or brushing operations. C. The designated Supervisory personnel on the project must be certified, in writing by the Turf Manufacturer, as competent in the installation of this material, including sewing seams and proper installation of the infill mixture. D. All designs, markings, layouts, and materials shall conform to all currently applicable National Collegiate Athletic Association rules and /or other standards that may apply to this type of synthetic grass installation, such as National Federation of High Schools rules and markings of FIFA guidelines EXAMINATION A. Verify that all sub -base, drainage and leveling is complete prior to installation. B. The surface to receive the synthetic turf must be inspected by the Installer, and prior to the beginning of installation, the Installer must accept the sub -base in writing. The acceptance will depend on the owner providing the installer with test results indicating that compaction, planarity and permeability are in compliance with the synthetic turf manufacturer' s specifications. The surface must be perfectly clean as installation commences and shall be maintained in that condition throughout the process. Acceptance shall be for tolerance to grade ( 1/ 4 inch in 10 feet in all directions) INSTALLATION OF TURF SYSTEM A. Install in accordance with Manufacturer's instructions. The Turf Contractor shall strictly adhere to the installation procedures outlined under this section. Any variance from these requirements must be accepted, in writing, by the onsite representative of the Manufacturer /Installer, and submitted to the Architect/ Owner, verifying that the changes do not in any way affect the warranty or performance of the system. Infill materials shall be approved by the Manufacturer and installed in accordance with the Manufacturer' s standard procedures. C. The carpet rolls are to be installed directly over the properly prepared aggregate base or shock pad. Extreme care should be taken to avoid disturbing the aggregate base or damaging the pad, both in regard to compaction and planarity. It is suggested that a 2-5 ton static roller be placed on site and made available to repair and properly compact any disturbed areas of the aggregate base. C. The carpet shall be delivered in 15 -foot wide rolls. The full width rolls shall be laid out across the field. Turf shall be of sufficient length to permit full cross -field installation ( from sideline to sideline). No " head" or cross seams will be allowed in the main playing area between the sidelines, as per standard turf installation procedures. Utilizing standard state of the art sewing or gluing procedures, each roll shall be attached to the next. When all of the rolls of the playing surface have been installed, the sideline areas shall be installed at right angles to the playing field turf. E. Infill materials shall be applied in thin lifts. The turf shall be brushed as the mixture is applied. The infill material shall be installed to a depth determined by the Manufacturer or 1. 5 inch within the fiber matrix. The mix shall be uniform and even in thickness to assure proper playing characteristics. F. The infill materials shall be installed to fill the voids between the fibers and allow the fibers to remain vertical and non - directional. Infill density shall consist of no less than 3 pounds of sand ( and no more than 4 pounds of sand) and at least 3 pounds of rubber granules per square foot. The infill shall be placed so that there is a void of 1/ 2" to the top of the fibers. A pure layer of rubber shall be placed as the final lift of the fill, to minimize sand coming in contact with players. E. Synthetic turf shall be attached to the perimeter edge detail in accordance with the Manufacturer' s standard procedures. F. Inlaid markings that are not tufted into the system shall be sheared out to the backing and a new piece of turf installed using special hot melt machinery and adhesives. Cutting through the turf backing to glue in markings to a separate seaming tape is not an acceptable method of constructing permanent markings. SYNTHETIC TURF SURFACING 5 Section AFCI 2009 Page 5
