Notify Engineer of unexpected subsurface conditions and discontinue affected work in the area until notified to resume work. E. Protect bottom of excavations and soil adjacent to and beneath foundation from frost. F. Grade excavation top perimeter to prevent surface water runoff into excavation. A. Tests and analysis of fill materials will be performed in accordance with ASTM D-1556, ASTM D-1557, and ASTM D-2922 by the Owner Representative. A. Submit samples in accordance with Section B. Submit gradation and proctor tests to the Owner Representative. Provide 50 pound samples to the Owner Representative upon request for Owner testing DEFINITIONS A. "Backfill" or "fill" means (a) material used to replace material removed during construction, or (b) the act of replacing or placing material during construction. B. "Backfill operation" or "fill operation" means the method and the activity required to fill surface depressions and excavations, or to construct fills to required grades. C. "Common fill" means fill or borrow materials which are naturally occurring and not meeting a specific gradation or classification. D. "Select fill" means fill or borrow materials which are naturally occurring, screened or graded, or mixed to meet a specific gradation or classification. E. "Subgrade" means those areas and surfaces upon which additional materials are to be placed under contract, or which are to be constructed or prepared for the future placement thereon of other materials. 03/30/
4 PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 FILL MATERIAL FOR OVER-EXCAVATED AREAS A. Provide granular backfill materials meeting the requirements of "Select Fill" materials SELECT FILL MATERIALS A. Select Fill Material borrow is a coarse stone, gravel, or a crushed aggregate material which is free of shale, clay, friable materials, and/or debris. Unless otherwise specified in Geotechnical Report, Select Fill Material borrow shall be graded in accordance with ASTM C-136 within the following limits: Sieve Size % Passing 2 inches inch 40 to 80 No to 60 No to IMPORTED FILL MATERIALS A. Buildings - Refer to RB&G Geotechnical Investigation. B. Pavement areas- Refer to RB&G Geotechnical Investigation SUBBASE MATERIAL (PAVEMENT AREAS) A. Use granular subbase material that is untreated and be in conformance with UDOT Specifications. Unless specified otherwise, use "Granular Borrow" with a two (2) inch size maximum AGGREGATE BASE COURSE MATERIAL A. Use granular aggregate base course material that is untreated in conformance with UDOT Specifications. Unless specified otherwise, use "3/4 inch gradation." 03/30/
