ENVIRONMENT DIVISION COAL INDIA LTD HEADQUARTERS
LAND RECLAMATION Opencast mining method necessitates excavation of land. This initially leads to degradation of land. Coal India, tries to bring back the lost greenery by continuous afforestation and other reclamation activities. The mine reclamation is being monitored by advanced techniques i.e. Satellite Surveillance
SATELLITE SURVEILLANCE OF OPENCAST MINES
OBJECTIVES SATELLITE SURVEILLANCE To have practical idea about Areas of backfilled zone Plantation status / Social Forestry Position of OB Dumps Internal / External Active Mining Area Water bodies Land Use Classes viz. waste land, agricultural land & forest land. Status of Settlement / Resettlement To assess the remedial measures required for land reclamation / restoration. To utilize the reclaimed land for larger socio-economic benefits in a planned way.
Procedures: Satellite Data: Procurement of RESOURCESAT (LISS-IV) data from NRSA, Hyderabad (Government of India Undertaking). Collateral Data: Procurement of Ancillary Data related to concerned OCP from coal company. Satellite Data Processing: Data processed using ERDAS image processing software. Information stored on GIS Platform for temporal analysis. Ground Truthing: Selective ground verification of land use classes to be validated in each project. Report Finalisation: Report finalised and uploaded in websites of CIL, CMPDIL & concerned subsidiary.
Basic Data Data Source Secondary Data Topographical Maps IRS ID/ 1A (LISS - III) Pre-processing, geometric correction, rectification & georefrencing (Scale 1:50,000) Image Enhancement Training set Identification Geocoded FCC Generation Creation of Vector Database (Drainage, Road network Railway network) Signature Generation Training Set Refinement Report Preparation Pre-Field Classification Validation through Ground Truthing Pass Fail Final Land Use/ Cover Map Integration of Thematic Information in GIS Methodology for Land Use/Cover Mapping
Scope of the Satellite Monitoring : 163 OCPs are in operation in Coal India. 49 projects producing more than 5 Mm3 (Coal+OB) per annum being monitored once a year. 114 projects producing less than 5 Mm3 (Coal+OB) per annum will be monitored once in 3 years. Surveillance for 49 projects producing more than 5 Mm3 per annum has been completed during the year 2009.
OCPs of more than 5 Mm3 (Coal+OB) p.a. (Covered during 2009) Coal Company No. of Projects WCL 10 SECL 10 NCL 10 MCL 10 CCL 05 BCCL 02 ECL 02 TOTAL 49
Salient Findings Study reveals that in all OC projects, plantation area, green coverage and backfilled area have increased. Reclamation & afforestation have been done in every OC project. Compared to 2008, land reclamation has increased in the year Green cover has increased in all 49 OC mines in the year 2009 w.r.t year 2008.
Reclamation & Plantation Extensive tree plantation programme is undertaken every year by the subsidiaries of Coal India. Avenue plantation, plantation on the OB dumps, plantation around mines, residential colonies, available land is undertaken in existing as well as new projects. Coal India planted around 73 millions of plants till date. Coal India is committed to continue plantation which is a part of annual activities in each subsidiary.
