Even with the most modern technologies, however, the natural raw material wood makes production a challenging task that requires a thorough understanding of wood properties that significantly affect the quality and performance parameters of the product. The hundreds of different wood species and other lignocellulosic materials around the world make the production of wood-based panels an ever changing task that requires research, development, experimentation, and adjustment. It may appear that the wood-panel industry is mature, routinely producing commodity products such as particleboard or MDF and that further research and development are incremental, at best. This may be true when viewing the industry in a short-term perspective. Long-term, however, the wood-panel industry has undergone revolutionary changes. Plywood, OSB, particleboard, fiberboard, parallam, LVL, and other products were developed in the past century, with some products introduced only recently. New materials and technologies are constantly developed. Clearly, the innovation cycle is far longer than in the computer or pharmaceutical industries, but the wood-panel industry is very much dependent on innovation. This conference brings together suppliers, equipment manufacturers, panel producers, customers, and researchers. While we may be working in different fields, we have one thing common: a passion for wood and spirit for innovation. These two combined will bring our industry yet another step forward.
