1 GWINN FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT 277 ENTRY YEAR: 200 Compartment Acreage: 967 County: 52 Marquette Revision Date: 8/07/08 Stand Examiner: Kevin LaBumbard Legal Description: Sections 3 5 & 23 -, T46N-R26W, Marquette County Management Goals: This compartment contains many stands with a significant acreage inaccessible due to the steep, rocky terrain interspersed with beaver flooded lowlands. It is mixed conifer and aspen country, with white pine, jack pine, black spruce and fir in almost every stand, including the young aspen stands. Much of the landscape is remote, rugged rock bluffs dropping sharply to lowlands with access limited to foot traffic only. As a result, natural processes have been allowed to take place, with fire, wind events, and wildlife(beaver) showing their effects on species removal and regeneration. Essentially all of the accessible stands have been treated in the past with only one upland black spruce stand scheduled for harvest. The harvest plan will include considerations for species retention, coarse woody debris and BMP s. Soils and topography Topography is rolling to very steep with rock outcrops and cliffs. Soils are mostly sandy in the south with some loamy soils and igneous bedrock in the north. Soil associations consist of Baraga, Champion, Michigamee, and Rubicon. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment Private land with residences, and private industrial lands. Tilden Mine lands are located immediately to the north. Unique, Natural Features Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features Special Management Designations or Considerations: Much of the compartment is inoperable/inaccessible for harvest operations at this time. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Wildlife Habitat Considerations: A portion of the stands within the compartment are not accessible due to riverine areas and contour. Strive for appropriate age class distribution among aspen types and recruitment of long lived white pine, protection of riparian corridors and increased soft and hard mast production where possible. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Sections 3 5 & 23 -, T46N-R26W, Marquette County Surface sediments consist of thin to discontinuous glacial till over bedrock. The glacial drift thickness varies between 0 and 50 feet. The Precambrian Archean Granite/Gneiss subcrops

2 below the glacial drift. This rock could be used as dimension stone. A gravel pit is located in Section 23 and there should be potential. Abandoned iron mines are located two miles to the north. Part of this Compartment was previously leased for metallic exploration. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access Part of the compartment has good access off county roads MP and MU. The remainder of the comp. has poor vehicle access. Survey Needs: none Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Scenic outcrop views, limited hunting and fishing. Fire Protection: This compartment has a moderate risk for wildfire. Additional Compartment Information: The following 5 reports from the Operations Inventory System (OIPC) are attached: Cover Type by Age Class Cover Type by Management Objective Compartment Volume Summary Proposed Treatments No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments With Limiting Factors The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types Proposed treatments Proposed road access system Suggested potential old growth

11 EDEPARTMENT OF NATURAL R Report Date: 08/5/2008 Mgt. Unit Compartment: 277 DNR DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS Page of * This is a list of Dedicated Biodiversity Areas for this compartment along with a /4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to Dedicated Conservation Area Map for areas that the below listed Conservation Areas are located. Gwinn MICHIGAN SOURCES Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA Archaeological Site An aquatic or terrestrial area of the State that contains physical remains of human occupation. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade. Such sites may be identified by Natural heritage data from the State Historic Preservation Office. Proposed treatments in this compartment will be implemented in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of these sites. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, no further detail about location is available. SCA Cold Water Stream A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 20.
