New Zealand Plantation Forests interesting facts: 7% landmass in plantation forest (1.8M ha) Protected natural forest 24% landmass (6.5M ha) Large amount of marginal land available for more forest eg. for biomass to biorefinery 500 plantation trees per person 90% plantation forestry is radiata pine; 6 % is Douglas fir age = 1-40 years with 60 % of area < 15 yrs old generally harvested years

New Zealand Plantation Forests more interesting facts: - ~56% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified - Maoris now own 40% of the private forest land - annual harvests are of % global forest cover - Forestry sector contributes 3% of NZ GDP; 8% of export earnings ($NZ3.7B ) - 60 % of harvest processed further in New Zealand - forest-wood value chain # 2000 $/ha/yr 70 % to export markets: Australia, China, Japan,...

New Zealand Plantation Forest Ownership Others; 18,1% Small owners 35% Crown Lease; 4,6% CHH; 5,2% State Owned; 47,3% Elders/NZFP; 13,3% Fletcher Challenge; 11,5% large scale organisations fragmentation

Log flow in NZ forestry industry 60% processed in NZ 35% sawlogs & peelers 20% pulp & panels 5 % chip exports 40% log export Tauranga, North Island

What is New Zealand Forestry s Future? 40,000,000 35,000,000 Recoverable volume m 3 30,000,000 25,000,000 20,000,000 15,000,000 10,000,000 5,000,000 0

Response to the challenge.. SCION-MBIE contract : $20.25 million over 6 years Co-funded by forest grower levy ($1.53M p.a.) (collaborative R&I programme) Will take a systems approach to: 1. Maximise the benefits from the existing forest resource 2. Build a more productive forest resource for the future 3. Ensure that future intensification is sustainable and does not jeopardise industry s licence to operate Goal is to build profitable and resource-efficient planted forests that provide the raw material base for added-value processing

How is the programme structured? RA 1. A system approach to maximising value from existing forests RA 1.1 Understanding influence of G x E x S on wood properties RA 1.2 Enhancing productivity of older stands RA 2. Building more productive, higher quality forests for the future RA 2.1 Phenotyping the forest (LiDAR, genetics) RA 2.2 Doubling radiata pine productivity A) Defining the productivity gap B) Accelerator trials C) Head start in the nursery RA 2.3 Enhanced activity of the soil microbial community

How is the programme structured? RA 3. Sustainability under intensified regimes RA 3.1 Sustainability of soil, water and biodiversity RA 3.2a Sustainability over multiple rotations RA 3.2b Sustainability of steepland forestry RA 3.3 Spatial economic modelling for sustainable forestry RA 4. Closing the gab: translating science into sustainable business growth RA 4.1 Closing the gap

RA1 - Potential Intervention Points in the Growing Cycle End-of-rotation Characterisation of the resource Segregation based on properties Mid-rotation Enhancing growth

RA3 Spatial economic modelling The model can evaluate increased productivity under intensified regimes Productivity gap & potential productivity Mid-rotation interventions Tree health & wood quality Are those interventions increasing your forest value? Economic impacts Value of other ecosystem services biodiversity, recreation, avoided erosion, N, C sequestration

NZ Potential value of ecosystem services Biodiversity Dairy $ Return Erosion Water Sheep and beef Carbon Timber Planted forests Land use alternative

GCFF : what outcomes for the industry? Influence of G x E x S on wood properties Ability to predict which stands will respond to mid rotation interventions Confidence in wood quality after intervention New LiDAR and remote sensing tools Whole of forest measurement and phenotyping Productive capacity benchmarked Strategies for increasing productivity Precision forestry Evidence-base for sustainability and market access Increased investment Increased profitability

GCFF : who are we collaborating with to do interdisciplinary research? University of Auckland wood properties assessment University of Canterbury nutrition, water, genetics, remote sensing Landcare Research steepland forestry Waiariki Institute of Technology segregation CSIRO wood properties, physiology of wood formation University of Umea, Sweden microbial ecology Universite Laval product quality modelling Oregon State University wood physiology
