4 onkey Riding : On ocks and onkeys This song is a sea chantey, sung by sailors to keep up their spirits and to synchronize their work of hauling sails and loading and unloading cargo. In this song the cargo is lumber, transported from the Canadian province of Quebec, perhaps via a port on the Hudson Bay or the Gulf of St. Lawrence, across the Atlantic Ocean to Cardiff, Wales. Even today, forests still cover about one half of the area of the province of Quebec, and lumber is a significant export. Happily, Canadian law demands reforestation after logging, and the rate of deforestation in Quebec is almost zero. The lumber ships of the 1800 s traveled very slowly, and Sailor John would be paid after a three-months stint of work. In the song, the innkeepers in Cardiff are pleased to see Sailor John arrive with money to spend while in port. Or perhaps John is a Welshman by birth, and the song describes the Welsh family whom he supports, welcoming him home. rom the port in Cardiff, John and his ship probably carried coal from South Wales back to Quebec.!"#$%&#'())*+#,-./$#')#01221."#$."+#.3#4&2+%#5.,2#6&7&#&89.7$&:#,""/,22;# $%7./<%#$%1+#9.7$=##>.5?6.7?&7+#,":#+,12.7+#37.0#,7./":#$%&#6.72:#21@&:#,":# 7..0&:#"&,7-;=##A,22&:#BC1<&7#,;E#$%1+#,0,G1"<2;#0/2$15/2$/7,2#,7&,#%./+&:# 6.7?&7+#37.0#!7&2,":E#H5,":1",@1,E#H9,1"E#!$,2;E#H.0,21,E#I&0&"E#,":#$%&#A,71--&,"E#,0."<#0,";#.$%&7#5./"$71&+=## The donkey in this song is actually a steam-powered winch, used both in logging camps and on sailing vessels. The donkey of the logging industry was invented by Californian John olbeer in Before his invention, teams of horses, oxen, or men had to drag logs out of the woods so that the timber could be transported to rivers and eventually to barges and cargo ships. With this laborsaving device, loggers could attach a cable to the log that they had felled, use the donkey engine to roll that cable onto a drum, and the gradually shortening cable would drag the log out of the woods. The operator of the steam donkey was called a donkey puncher, just as cowboys were called cow punchers. Loggers dragged the cables deep into the woods in order to attach the cables to felled logs. The loggers who were attaching the cables communicated with the donkey puncher by a series of whistle codes, telling the donkey puncher that the log was ready to be hauled from the forest. Similarly, the donkey puncher signaled to the loggers with his steam whistle the exact moment when he would begin winding the cable onto the drum, so that the loggers would know to stand clear, in safety. The donkey itself was built onto a wooden sled so that it could be slid from place to place. To move it, the donkey puncher attached the cable to a stationary tree in the distance. The donkey dragged itself with its own winch cable toward that tree. On the next page is a photo of an old steam donkey in British Columbia, Canada. Once you can identify a steam donkey, you ll see them in your travels. I ve found one at the Maritime Museum in San rancisco, and one along a country road in West Virginia.

5 onkey Riding: A Steam onkey used for Logging Here is an old steam donkey in a Canadian forest. The boiler and chimney are on the left. The piston and flywheel are in the lower left corner. The steam moved the piston, and the flywheel translated that back-and-forth motion into circular motion. The flywheel is connected by gears to the drums, on which the cable would be wound to pull a log out of the woods. If you use your imagination, the boiler with its tall chimney looks like a king with a metal crown on his head, sitting or riding on the donkey. A steam donkey in the Malcolm Knapp Research orest, University of British Columbia, photographed by R. Schultz. 6 onkey Riding : How the onkey Worked on Land and Sea At the following site is a!-size replica of a logging donkey in operation, dragging a log in the replica maker s backyard. You can see the piston turning the flywheel, which can operate two spool drums, only one of which is in use in this video. You can also see the log-burning firebox and hear the vintage steam whistle. Our onkey Riding song actually refers to a steam donkey used on a ship. On ships, the donkey was a secondary engine used to haul cables for loading and unloading cargo, and for raising the larger sails. The name donkey comes from the facts that donkeys are small animals that can haul heavy loads, and that on ships and on docks real donkeys were sometimes used to raise sails and to lift cargo. To raise cargo from the hold of the ship (without a donkey), the sailors would place the cargo in a sling or otherwise tie ropes around it so that the load could be hoisted with an attached cable. The cable would be threaded through a block and tackle, also known as a pulley system. Here is a diagram of a block and tackle, showing how it would be used to hoist the cargo. In this diagram a sailor is raising the cargo out of the ship s hold, by pulling on the cable. But the cable that this sailor is pulling could instead be wound onto a drum turned by a steam-powered donkey. This line drawing of a block and tackle system was made by Pearson Scott oresman, who donated it to the public domain.

7 onkey Riding: A onkey on a Wharf in 1880 Here is an 1880 s photograph of a steam donkey on a wharf in San rancisco loading cargo onto the ship in the left foreground. You can see the steam rising from the chimney. You can also see the cable stretching diagonally up towards the top of the ship, where it probably is threaded around a block and tackle and thence down to a sling carrying a load of cargo up from the ship s hold. The little wheeled cart just to the right of the donkey perhaps holds fuel to fire the donkey s engine. The donkey on the ship would be a smaller model than this one. This photo is in the public domain in the United States as an image in the archives of the federal government (the National Park Service, San rancisco Maritime Historical Park) and because any copyright has expired.
